Royal Wootton Bassett Town came up just short in their South West Regional Women's Football League Premier Division encounter away against Poole Town.

Bassett's first away game of the season - against the side who pipped them to the Division One East title when last league rivals in 2023-24, the contest was determined by Alice Fisher's fourth minute goal.

With both defences on top, neither side was subsequently able to find the game's second goal as Poole scraped home.

Tight, often low scoring games in which they came out on top were Bassett's forte in their Division One North title winning campaign. And that continued into last weekend's Premier Division opener against AEK Boco which finished 2-1 in James Lally's side's favour.

However at Poole, Bassett found themselves on the losing side.

The visitors acquitted themselves well though - and it's clear Bassett will be competitive at tier five.

While just a couple of weeks into the season, early results suggests it is set to be a closely fought, exciting campaign across the board. Indeed, of the seven games played so far, just two have been decided by two or more goals.
