Royal Wootton Bassett Town are back up and running at tier five as James Lally's side opened their South West Regional Women's Football League Premier Division campaign with a 2-1 home victory over AEK Boco.

An entertaining, closely fought encounter saw Bassett come from behind, with Elle Scott's coolly taken second half penalty helping Bassett take the points.

Fifth place finishers last season, Boco represented tough opponents for promoted Bassett. But the hosts more than matched their visitors on their way to a narrow, deserved victory.

Boco had the first shot on goal of the match when Sarah-Jayne Doidge's free kick forced Millie Powell to tip over with just four minutes on the clock.

The teams traded blows in an open start, with Hannah Gulliver drawing an awkward save from Natasha Hibbert.

But Boco eventually took the lead ten minutes before half time. Bassett failed to clear from a corner that bounced around the box and when play was recycled the ball dropped to Mia Brain who steered into the bottom corner on the turn.

Parity was quickly restored though. A fine move down the right between Briony Hurd and Honor Fraser appeared to have broken down as Boco regained possession. However a well timed challenge from Hurd saw the ball break for Megan Young who, with time to turn, saw Hibbert off her line and curled a delightful 30 yard effort into the top corner.

Bassett then went ahead on the hour. A quick break saw Young charge free. She was able to get her shot off with Hibbert turning around the post but a late, heavy challenge from Millie Lacey saw her scythed down. The referee pointed to the spot and Scott sent Hibbert the wrong way.

Boco had a great chance to equalise immediately when Darcy Cox was unable to head clear but Lucy Atkinson blazed over.

That was the last time Boco posed a real threat though as Bassett's defence tightened up with the hosts successfully seeing the game out.
