First half RAF bombardment downs Vets

Royal Wootton Bassett Town's Over 35s Veterans team suffered a 3-1 defeat in a friendly fixture against their RAF FA equivalents at the FA's St George's Park facility.

Three RAF goals all scored in an emphatic twenty minute first half spell ultimately proved the difference between the teams as, despite battling hard against well-organised opponents, Bassett were unable to mount a comeback.

Bassett started brightly and had chances to go in front, the best of which fell to Kevin Gulliver who saw his long range effort tipped over the bar.

But the RAF then proceeded to produce a trio of well worked goals to put them well ahead at the break.

Bassett improved after the restart, and a period of sustained pressure ultimately yielded a goal as debutant Dean Ramshaw's fine cross was headed home by Andy Huggins.

A couple more good opportunities fell Bassett's way as time wound down with Kelvin Spencer rattling the bar and Martin Ohrland seeing a header cleared off the line. But the RAF successfully resisted Bassett's attempts to force a tense end to the match.

In an open game, the RAF also had plenty of chances in front of goal to put the game properly out of sight but the woodwork came to Bassett's rescue on more than one occasion, while 'keeper Paul Boys-Stones also made a number of excellent saves.
