Solid Performance as Veterans Win 4-0

Action in the Wiltshire League North Division saw divisional leaders Royal Wootton Bassett Town Veterans looking to open up a gap at the top of the table when they met bottom side AFC Swindon still looking to for their first point in the league.

After several missed chances, player-manager Martin Ohrland put the league leaders ahead with a left foot shot from 30 yards out.

It was not all one-way traffic through as Bassett 'keeper George Boys-Stones just held onto a shot from the edge of the box to maintain his sides lead.

Bassett extended that lead before the break when a ball through the middle cut open the AFC Swindon defence, finding Chris Head who slid the ball under the keeper for 2-0.

The second half saw Bassett continue to press for more goals but a combination of some stoic defending and wasted chances saw the leaders struggle to extend their lead.

They hit the crossbar from a free kick but did eventually find the net again. Ohrland found Head with another defence splitting ball before Head rounded the 'keeper and slotted home for 3-0.

It looked like Head would then complete a hat-trick, but his goal bound effort was punched away by an AFC Swindon defender. Ben Gould put it into the net but the referee had already blown for a penalty and sent the AFC Swindon defender off. Gould was not to be denied his goal though as he took the resulting penalty to score his seventh of the season to become his side's leading scorer.

The 4-0 win saw Bassett go three points clear at the top of the table, but having played three games more than Redhouse who are six points behind and one more than Priory Vale who are three points behind the leaders.
