Royal Wootton Bassett Town Under 16 Girls came up agonisingly short in a close-fought, high quality Wiltshire County Cup Final against Westbury Youth Amazons as they fell to a 2-1 defeat.

The teams were playing slick, passing football throughout, though both defences were also proving to be strong.

It took until the stroke of half time for Bassett to get the breakthrough. Lauren Usher went on a lung-busting run down the right before delivering a superb, pin-point cross which leading scorer Sophie Roberts headed in off the post.

Having defeated Westbury 5-0 in a league encounter at the start of the month, Bassett were hoping that goal would spur them to another victory against the Wiltshire County Girls League leaders.

However, Westbury fought back, equalising with a low drive shortly after the restart from Shaneez Mwaura.

They then snatched a winner with ten minutes remaining, as great work from the Amazons midfield set up Jade Whale's smart finish.

Despite defeat, it was a great effort by the Bassett girls. And they still have a chance to claim some silverware this season, with a League Cup final against Frome Town Ladies still to come.
