Reserves come up just short in thriller

A sterling second half comeback from Royal Wootton Bassett Town Reserves came up just short as they were defeated 4-3 by Cricklade Town in their second game of the season.

At half time of their visit to near neighbours Cricklade Town, Royal Wootton Bassett Town Reserves, at 3-0 down, were on the brink of becoming the second side in a handful of days to fall to a heavy defeat against the Wiltshire League Premier Division newcomers.

However, unlike Bromham, who Cricklade thrashed 7-1 in their season opener, Bassett staged a stunning fightback, which saw them narrowly miss out on claiming a second successive point as they fell to defeat only by the odd goal in seven.

After Cricklade's three goal first period, Shaun Terry struck twice following the resumption to bring his side back to within a goal.

The hosts then restored a two goal advantage before Scott Walduck provided his third assist of the game to set up Terry for his hat trick goal.

Cricklade were now on the ropes and looked nervous as they defended their slender lead.

Bassett should have had a chance to draw level too but were denied what appeared to be a blatant penalty at the end.
