Under 18s come up short in County Championship Playoff

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Under 18s were unable to crown their outstanding season with the Wiltshire Floodlit League County Championship title as they fell to a 3-1 defeat against South Division winners Melksham Town in the North-South Playoff.

Having stormed to the North Division title with just one defeat in their eight games, Bassett were pitted against a Melksham team who had enjoyed similar success in the South Division.

The teams had already met once before this season too, with Melksham winning 4-2 in a Wiltshire Youth Cup second round contest.

And their fast start in the League Playoff proved too much for Bassett, who nevertheless fought well.

Melksham were 2-0 up at half time before adding a third early in the second period, their goals coming from Rhys Talmash and Tom Mack.

Dan Smith added a goal for Bassett from the penalty spot, which ultimately proved to be little more than a consolation goal.
