Easter double boosts Reserves' top five hopes

01 Apr 2013 - Cricklade Town (H)

To record two wins, while scoring eight goals and conceded none in their Easter derby double header was achievement enough for Wootton Bassett Town Reserves. However, the significance of that success could be even greater as Simon Paish's team stake a claim for a top five finish in Hellenic League Division Two West.

With seven games remaining Bassett currently occupy fifth, holding a two point advantage over Cheltenham Saracens. Gloucester City Development are also a threat; though nine points back they possess six games in hand. But having found a rich vein of form, Bassett will be hopeful of holding off their challengers in the season's final weeks.

Against Fairford Town on Saturday they put in a solid performance to win 2-0, the goals coming either side of half time from Carl Shepherd and Craig Dixon.

Dixon netted again in Monday's clash with Cricklade Town. When he did so in the 37th minute it made the score 4-0, with Steve Robertson, Liam Edmondson and Scott Walduck having already put the game beyond doubt. Shaun Terry made it five shortly after the restart before Robertson struck again late on to complete a fine 6-0 romp.

While last season's fourth place finish may not be repeated, Bassett's second string are on course to conclude another noteworthy campaign in style.
