Reserves Wallop Wantage

27 Oct 2012 - Wantage Town (H)

Wootton Bassett Town Reserves got back to winning ways with a thumping 4-0 victory at home against Wantage Town, a result which lifted Simon Paish's team into fourth in Hellenic League Division Two West.

The opening stages were relatively tight with both sides getting forward and playing some attractive football.

Bassett would eventually draw first blood as Craig Dixon finished well midway through the period. It then didn't take long for Tyron Connolly to double the advantage and deliver a sucker punch to the visitors. Jon Davis took a quick free kick, which a visiting defender failed to clear. That allowed right-winger Connolly to nip in front of the 'keeper and poke home.

After the restart Wantage sought to apply pressure to try and get back into the game, but sterling defending led by centre halves Mike Yates and George Drewitt ensured that they failed to really test Stewart Thompson in the Bassett goal.

And Lee Smith would make them pay with a fine two goal salvo. His first was well taken from just inside the box after a swift move. Moments later the forward produced a moment of real magic. Over thirty yards from goal, Smith took one touch before blasting a piledriver into the top left corner, leaving a helpless Wantage 'keeper rooted to the spot.
