20 Feb 2011 - FC Calne 'B' (A)

Following the convincing win of last weekend, Bassett U11s travelled to Calne looking to continue in the same way. Good passing and plenty of effort was the theme of the day.

It took only 2 minutes for Bassett to produce the first real threat on the Calne goal, Charlie winning the ball in midfield passing to Declan Cox, Declan's shot being pushed over the bar by the Calne keeper. A minute later Bassett did take the lead when a throw down the left found Declan Cox, who turned and passed the ball through the Calne defence for Lewis to run onto and tuck the ball inside the right hand post.

On 8 minutes Bassett almost extended their lead when Ollie picked up a loose ball on the edge of the area but fired his shot just wide of the post. It was Ollie again who came close to scoring next. Charlie and Declan Coffey linked nicely on the right, Charlie's cross being met on the volley by Ollie. Unfortunately, once again the ball flew the wrong side of the post.

The score remained at 1-0 despite the dominance that Bassett had on the game. Bassett's next chance game on 15 minutes when a long ball by Edward was touched on by Declan Cox. The ball beating the advancing keeper but going narrowly wide of the left hand post.

The move of the game started with James knocking the ball back to Conor as a forward pushed hard for the ball. Conor passed the ball from the edge of his box out to Ollie on the right. Ollie found Declan Cox who laid the ball inside to Lachlan. Lachlan's shot skinning the right hand post. A minute later an attack down the right ended with Declan Coffey's shot being pushed away for a corner.

On 21 minutes Lewis broke free from midfield, fed the ball to Declan Cox, another good save defying Bassett again. From the corner that followed, Callum crossed low for Lewis to hit a first time shot that skidded under the keeper to make it 2-0 Bassett. At last!!

As half time approached Matthew Nicholls threw to Lewis who passed it straight back. Matthew then passed to Declan Cox. Declan's cross-shot was pushed away by the keeper but the ball landed at Callum's feet who knocked it into the open goal with ease.

Half-time: 3-0

Bassett started the second half with the same determination that they finished the first half. A quick throw by Conor was collected by Lachlan in midfield. Lachlan passed the ball out left for Callum. Callum's cross was met by Declan Cox, one touch and a fine finish ended another excellent move and made it 4-0 Bassett.

Shortly afterwards Matthew Nicholls won a tackle and the ball fell to Lachlan. Lachlan looked up and floated a ball over the defence, Lewis's header taking a fine save to stop the Bassett lead being further extended. However, the crowd did not have to wait long as on the next attack, Matthew Nicholls and Declan Cox combined on the left, Declan looping a shot over the Calne keeper.

This goal was quickly followed by another Bassett attack when Declan Coffey crossed from the right. This time Lewis's header was pushed against the post by the diving Calne keeper. Lachlan took the resulting corner and as the ball flew across the Calne goal, Declan Coffey was on hand to knock the ball in from 3 yards.

To keep players warm on this cold day a few changes in the Bassett formation then followed. Despite this Bassett remained dominant and a real attacking threat. On 12 minutes A Calne goal kick went straight to Conor, whose first time shot went straight back into the Calne goal to make it 7-0 Bassett.

Moments later it was a case of dejavus as Conor was on the end of another goal kick. This time the ball went just wide of the post. Moments later Conor was almost on the score sheet again when Mathew Corscadden and Declan Coffey combined on the right, Conor being inches away from the final ball across the 6 yard box.

On 20 minutes Charlie took a free kick from just outside the Calne box, another fine save being made by the keeper. A minute later Ollie picked up the ball and turned inside the defender, his left foot shot sliding under the keeper and into the far corner.

Bassett continued to play good passing football right to the end. This no more being shown when Lewis won a tackle at the back, played a simple ball down the line to Declan Coffey. Declan in turn found Edward who passed the ball onto Charlie. As Charlie's fearsome shot was heading for the top corner an outstretched hand from the diving Calne keeper just managed to tip the ball over the bar.

Full-time: 8-0

Coach's Match Analysis: There was always a danger that following last week's excellent performance the lads could be a bit complacement today, but we needn't have worried as they produced an even better 60 minutes of passing football that was a joy to watch & be involved in. We scored 8 good goals that would‘ve been more if it wasn't for the Calne goalie, who made several great saves. The attitude & way the players go about the sessions at training have really started to pay off in matches & with 4 cup finals left in the season the yardstick has been set for them to maintain. A special thanks to James Evans who sort of volunteered to go in goal in the 2nd half allowing Conor to have a run on the pitch & score his first ever goal, which brought the loudest cheer of the day as he didn't have a clue how to celebrate. WELL DONE TO ALL 12 PLAYERS INVOLVED.

Player of the Match: Another good team performance which showed the team spirit and quality that we have in the Bassett team. Once again any of the player's today could have won the award but the POTM for today goes to Lachlan Beggs for his strength in midfield and his excellent distribution of the ball.

Team: Conor Chivers, Matthew Nicholls, Edward Fish, Oliver Cameron, Charlie Poynter, James Evans, Declan Cox, Callum Bridges, Lewis Ward, Lachlan Beggs (Capt.), Matthew Corscadden, Declan Coffey
