13 Feb 2011 - Chiseldon (H)

A windy and wet Ballards Ash played host to the latest Wootton Bassett U11 fixture. Following the excellent win last week, Bassett looked for another good performance to keep the pressure on the two teams currently above them in the league.

On 3 minutes Ollie and Lewis combined on the right, Declan knocking the cross into the Chiseldon goal only for it to be disallowed and ruled as offside. This little setback didn't affect the boys and they continued to play some neat passing football on the slippy pitch and very quickly took control of the game. On several occasions width was created down both wings but unfortunately the final cross skid across the Chiseldon box and frustratingly just out of the reach of the attacking Bassett players.

The first scare on the Bassett goal came after 14 minutes when a Chiseldon corner was cleared off the line by Matthew Nicholls at the back post. Two minutes later Bassett took the lead when Zach pounced on a loose ball on the edge of the Chiseldon area and his shot slipped under the diving keeper.

Bassett piled on the pressure and attacked at pace. Somehow it took another ten minutes before they scored again. Following a throw on the left, James created space, looked up and delivered an excellent cross into the Chiseldon area. The brilliant delivery was met by the head of Lewis and the ball flew inside the left hand post.

A minute later Bassett went three up when Charlie won the ball with a strong tackle then passed through to Zach who beat the Chiseldon defender to the ball and score past the advancing keeper. Moments before the half time whistle Zach got his hat trick when he picked up a goal kick, rode the defender's tackle and shot low into the bottom corner.

Half-time: 4-0

Two minutes into the second half Bassett made it 5 when a cross field ball from Zach was picked up by Matthew Nicholls. Matthew knocked the ball round the defender and showed real determination by getting to the ball first and shot past into the back of the Chiseldon goal.

It was all one way traffic at this point. Harry, Edward and Charlie dealt with any Chiseldon counter attack and Conor was not required to make a save. At the other end the Chiseldon keeper was kept busy by shots from Zach, Callum, Lewis and Ollie.

On 10 minutes Bassett scored again when James laid the ball back to Callum whose shot flew into the roof of the net from the edge of the area. This goal was followed by a momentary lack of concentration by Bassett and Chiseldon attacked down the left wing. The ball was allowed to bounce across the front of goal and was met at the back post by the Chiseldon forward who scored with a neat finish.

Bassett went goal crazy and scored 5 goals in the last 10 minutes of the game. On 20 minutes Lachlan picked up a goal kick, beat two players and unleashed a tremendous shot which was still rising as it hit the back of the net. Two minutes later Bassett won a corner which was met at the back post by Matthew Corscadden to score his first goal for Bassett in only his second game for the club.

Moments later Charlie and Callum combined to create an opening for Zach to score his fourth and Basset's ninth goal. This was soon followed by a tenth when Lewis's pass was met by James who produced a very calm finish.

As full time drew near Bassett were still playing good passing football and a fine move between Lewis and Ollie saw Lewis lay the ball back to Lachlan who shot and score from 8 yards.

Full-time: 11-1

Coach's Match Analysis: An emphatic victory in the end but from a coach's perspective it was good to see the team show patience the goals started to flow and keep their team shape. This is something that we've been working on in training and emphasising the importance before each game.

It is a good habit to have that as a team you earn the right to play a passing game if you concentrate on winning the battle as a team first. We scored some fantastic goals when we kept the game simple and it was pleasing to see the goals shared around the team. It's now time for the team to continue this form and work ethic in the last 5 games of the season. Well done to all 13 players and thank you for all the support received from the sidelines.

Player of the Match: Another good team performance against one of the league's weaker sides. Teamwork and good passing was most evident today, two skills that were exemplified by today's POTM which was James Evans.

Team: Conor Chivers (Capt.), Matthew Nicholls, Edward Fish, Oliver Cameron, Charlie Poynter, James Evans, Harry Woodhouse, Declan Cox, Callum Bridges, Lewis Ward, Lachlan Beggs, Zach Bunce, Matthew Corscadden
