Both teams make a slow start

It was the first league game of the season and both teams seemed a bit rusty at the start. The early pressure came from Bassett with Scott having a good early shot. Reuben fed the ball into Scott who shot just wide and Ollie got in the action with a toe poke in front of goal that was blocked as Cirencester defended in numbers. Bassett got the ball in the box and had Cirencester in difficulties. Alex had a shot which was blocked and then Scott hit a shot that took a wicked deflection and went just wide.

Max looking comfortable in the right back position had a good run out of defence to link up with the attackers.

Cirencester started to mount a challenge which required some good defensive work from Mitchell who made several good clearances. Coming up to half-time, Ciren earned a corner and the ball went across the face of the goal into a crowded penalty area and Ciren prodded the ball in the net with Ben unsighted and unable to get to it. In response, Bassett had some good combination play with Alex flicking the ball via Scott to Ollie who shot just wide.

After half-time, Ciren caught Bassett napping with their first attack and won a corner and repeated their earlier goal with a shot into the top corner. Alex, Scott and Ollie worked hard to get the ball moving against Ciren who defended in depth. Tom came on at right back for his first start for Bassett A team and Max moved up the wing. Max tested the Ciren flank and got a shot off that hit the side netting.

Next from a free kick in their own half, Ciren sent it long and our defence was beaten by the bounce and the Ciren striker ran on to find the net. Bassett were disappointed at this stage as minor errors had been punished and on another day we could have been in front.

Bassett rallied with Scott having a turn and shot that was saved by the keeper but deserved a goal. Later from a throw Reuben had a shot that was heading for the top corner but the keeper got to it and it became clear that it was not going to be Bassett's day. More Bassett pressure earned a corner which resulted in a shot from Scott that hit the bar and Alex followed up with a header that went just wide.

Just before the final whistle Ciren pounced on a loose ball to go four up and give them a very flattering score line. Bassett were not quite at the races today but played better than the scoreline suggests.
