Frustrating but Bassett win in the end

Well after having a 2 week break from action in the Oxford League, the team faced a Chinnor team that are sitting at the foot of the table. What looked like an easy match played on paper turned out to be a very frustrating and difficult match when played on grass.

The preparations for the match were thrown into disarray when 2 players ruled themselves out with injuries. So Bassett with a depleted squad faced Chinnor fielding only 6 players. With Chinnor at full strength (7 players) and having numerous subs it was always going to be difficult for Bassett. Bassett started well and dominated play, but as with all teams they raise their game when playing against the current league champions and Chinnor were no different they frustrated Bassett who for all their hard work and endeavour could not find the killer touch that all their possession deserved, the first half ended at 0 - 0.

The second half started much the same way as the first. Cox and Thomas who were playing in defence found plenty of time to help in attack as Chinnor posed very little threat. Robyn Levett playing in goal was used more in a sweeper role to help the team pile on the pressure. Bassett were starting to think that is just wasn't their day. With the Chinnor keeper playing like David Seaman in his prime it was always going to take something special to beat the her. Cometh the hour cometh the man (girl) Bassett's captain K. Johnstone led by example, a long clearance was taken on the chest and she attacked the defence and it parted like the Red Sea and then she unleashed a shot that Ronaldo would be proud of, it hit the back of the net before the keeper could move 1 - 0 Bassett. With the goal came relief and Bassett relaxed and played some attractive football. Spalding and Reynolds were causing mayhem in the Chinnor defence the latter unlucky not to add to her total for the season. Then a fine individual effort from Spalding made it 2 - 0. The remainder of the game was much the same with Bassett attacking. The match finished at 2 - 0 with Bassett having shown excellent character and plenty of determination to win against the odds. Well, like all good leagues they break for the winter months so Bassett don't have a match in the Oxford League till the New Year.
