Bassett share 6 goals with Swindon Victoria

It was a splendid game starting on a low note and building up to a thrilling climax with Wootton Bassett saving a point right at the end. They were first to score when Brian Ewan netted soon after the start and they held that lead at the interval. Early in the second half, however, Tony Vines with his arms all over the place got one of them in the way of the ball to give the Vics a penalty from which Andy Davitt equalised. A few minutes later Vines landed himself in a similar predicament when facing a centre from Joe O'Rourke and Davitt's penalty kick put Vics in front. Soon afterwards the one blot of a good game occurred when a sudden flare up resulted in two players, one from each side being sent off. Wootton Bassett, working hard to get back into the game hauled themselves level at 2-2 with a goal from Phil Keep. But with time beginning to get short, Davitt's accurate dead ball kicking put the Vics in front again, this time from a free kick which Gerry Stewart touched but could not stop. The climax came two minutes from the end with a glorious piece of running off the ball by Bob Thomas. He must have raced fully 30 yards in anticipation of a pass and when it came he was all set to meet the ball and turn it into the Vics net.
