Bryant's Goal Tipped the Scales

The Wiltshire Gazette, Thursday 9th September 1954

Roundway Hospital displayed their fighting qualities at Green Lane, where they beat Wootton Bassett 4-3 after twice being in arrears. The turning point of the game came 15 minutes from the end when Roy Bryant scored two goals, in as many minutes.

Roundway were handicapped early when their pivot, Aiston, received an injury, although he pluckily resumed for the remainder of the game at outside left.

Talbot gave the visitors an early lead and it was a case of missed chances by both sides until Burgess equalised just before half time from a penalty.

Rowland, also a penalty, restored Wootton Bassett's lead, both awards having been given for infringements by the goalkeepers, Blagden and Clifton.

The latter excelled when he saved two pile-drivers from Burgess, one a free-kick and then Bryant made amends for an earlier miss with his two snap goals.

Bittner, who made a pleasing debut for Roundway on the right-wing, scored a fourth goal direct from a corner, and in a late burst Cole reduced the arrears for the visitors.

Roundway were well served in goal by Blagden, making his first appearance of the season, Walker and Arden, and the inside trio, Milbank, Perrins, and the skipper, Smith, had to work hard against the visitor's defence.
