MARLBOROUGH WANDERERS 0 – 2 WOOTTON BASSETT TOWN

From The Devizes & Wiltshire Gazette, February 26th 1903

In this match at Marlborough on Saturday the home team was deprived of the services of their goalkeeper, Rushert, and the right-wing forward Jones.

The visitors won the toss, and played with a strong wind in their favour during the first half.

Marlborough bombarded the visitors goal during the first quarter of an hour, and Taylor and Bodman in turn failed to find the net.

Owing to a foul by Slade the homesters were penalised, and Wootton Bassett scored. Soon after the visitors right-wing centred the ball, which, however, was carried by the wind onto one of the uprights, rebounding into the net.

Nothing further was scored up to half time, the visitors then leading by two goals to nil.

In the second half rain fell with increased severity and accurate play was out of the question.

Marlborough had practically all the play in the second moiety, but failed to make use of their chances, the game resulting in a victory for Wootton Bassett by two goals to nil.

The game was roughly contested, and it was to be regretted that some of the Marlborough player should have indulged in foul tactics.

A protest has been lodged by the Marlborough Club against the result, on the grounds of one of the visitors being an unqualified player.
