Ohrland’s brace saves Bassett’s heavy legs

Bit of a tired effort this report, much like the Bassett effort after Saturday's 90 minutes at St. George's Park. The Blues got the win but this was a very lethargic, disjointed performance and the three points were welcome. Stratton Juniors only fielded ten men after an injury in the warm-up but put up a great show as the Vets toiled as a collective.

Indeed, they were caught square several times by long balls through to their pacy striker, who was unlucky to see one finish ping back off of Boys-Stones' left-hand post.

Bassett never got into their stride and were thankful for a half time lead, Steve Shaw released down the right and his measured cross nodded back past the keeper by Steve Howse.

Dave Parker had been lost to a first-half injury and so Bassett had the bare eleven. And in the second half some of the lactic acid left their legs as they took a greater control, Shaw seeing two similar efforts hit the bar and then having an opportunistic finish ruled out harshly for offside, flicking in a Martin Cooper free-kick.

. It was left to Martin Ohrland to provide the impetus with two goals to secure the win. The first followed him gaining control of a bouncing ball in midfield, surging forward, then unleashing a left-foot drive that left the 'keeper floundering. His second came via good interplay in midfield that released Shaw on the left and his low cross was turned in Lampard-style by the big number eight.

Stratton gained a consolation as again their forward raced away and this time Paul Jack was penalised for his challenge in the box. With no VAR being used, the penalty was nonchalantly dispatched to finish the game 3-1.

Man of the Match: Martin Ohrland - turned up at the important moments to secure the win.

Pink Pony: Gav Cook's optimistic long-distance shot is a definite contender!
