Sunday side march on towards promotion

In an unsurprisingly competitive match between two strong teams, Royal Wootton Bassett Town's Sunday side prevailed with a 2-0 win against Highworth Town to maintain their place at the summit of Swindon Sunday League Division Two.

With closest rivals Eldene losing to Rudis, the gap between first and second is now four points and it looks increasingly likely that Bassett will at least achieve promotion to Division One in their first year since being formed.

With five games remaining, the title is also firmly in their sights too.

Facing Highowrth without the services of Danny Hale and Josh Morse through work commitments and Lewis Petrie courtesy of a suspected fractured ankle, Bassett had to make do without three key players who have scored 65 goals between them so far this season.

But, in a tight game of few real chances, a fantastic strike from Marcus Hall gave Bassett an early lead before Ryan Thomas added a late penalty to give Bassett another three points.

Their goals also meant that both players have reached ten for the season – making it six players in all who have reached that milestone - and leaves the team with a staggering goal difference of +100 after 17 league games.
