Stirring comeback keeps Dev team on track for second

19 Apr 2014 - Intel FC (H)

Demonstrating great character for such a young team, Wootton Bassett Town Development twice came from behind before a stunning Jake Kitchin winner secured a thrilling 3-2 victory against Intel FC, Bassett's rivals for runners-up in Wiltshire League Division One.

The three points took Bassett into second, two points ahead of Intel with a game remaining. Dave Terry and Wayne Petrie's team still have much to do to seal runners-up spot though, with a visit to champions Melksham Town Reserves on Friday, while Intel face bottom side Blunsdon to conclude their campaign.

Second best in the first half, Bassett trailed going into half time. Intel scored early, and were it not for a fine parry from Russell Faulkner, would have been two to the good.

Bassett's best chance of the half fell Jonny Aitkenhead who saw a bullet header following a right wing corner batted away. Otherwise, however, they failed to take advantage of the numerous corners that fell their way.

The half time break seemed to do Dave Terry and Wayne Petrie's team a world of good though. Rejuvenated, they quickly got back on level terms as Lewis Petrie netted for the 33rd time this season.

Intel restored their advantage quickly, a decisive counter attack leading to a strike that struck the underside of the bar before dropping just over the line.

With the game opening up, parity was soon restored as Ray Lovell steered home Kitchin's low cross.

A point would not have sufficed for Bassett, however. And a moment of magic from Kitchin secured victory with ten minutes to go.

Receiving an Aitkenhead pass just outside the area, Kitchin danced past two defenders before firing into the back of the net from a tight angle.
