Under 18s Taught a Harsh Lesson

19 Apr 2011 - New College Academy (N)

There is to be no double for the under 18 Floodlit League side after they were comprehensively beaten 4-1 by New College Academy in the final of the Wiltshire Youth Cup.

Bassett started much the better side in the showcase at Bremhill View, but failed to make their early pressure count, being denied by the crossbar on one occasion.

They were then made to rue failing to make anything of this spell, falling behind when Sam Brown capitalised on a spill to give New College the lead.

The college side doubled their lead shortly after the restart as Josh Skeates netted a carbon copy of his team's first. The lively forward pounced again to put the result beyond doubt, shrugging off the attention's of his marker, before rounding Harry Ellis in the Bassett goal and slotting home.

A Jacob Hayden header ensured Bassett of a consolation goal, but New College's lead was once again extended to three goals when Brad Stanners smashed home his side's fourth.

It was a frustrating outcome for Bassett after they had done so well to overcome last season's disappointment of losing in the semi finals. To be only the second side in the club's history to make the final of this competition is no mean feat though. Luckily Danny Groom's side have the chance to bounce back immediately from this setback and clinch some silverware when they host Bemerton Heath Harlequins at Rylands Way on Thursday, requiring just a point to seal the Floodlit League title with two games to spare.

And with the cup, the majority of the team will have another crack at it next season.
