Sunday 20th September 2009 - St Nicholas (H)

The game started at a fast tempo, with both side's looking to play 4 4 2 formations, St Nich's made the better of their early possession going close a couple of times and only Samantha Wood deputising for Leah Blanchard in goal, keeping the score's level. Bassett were struggerling to get any real pressure on the St Nich's goal with the away defence holding strong, this was a good platform for their midfield players to link with the strikers at will.

First blood St Nich's a flowing move down the Bassett right left three players out of the game and the rest of the defence scampering to stop the danger, The Bassett defence unable to stop a deep cross to the far post where a St. Nich's player was on hand to head home from six yards.

More pressure from St. Nich's and only some poor finishing and last ditch defending was keeping the score 1-0, with only three minuets before half time St Nich's scored a second goal, coming from a determined run from midfield who first won the ball just inside the Bassett half on the touch line, driving inside beating two soft challenge's to reach the edge of the Bassett box, then firing high into the top corner.

0 – 2 St. Nich's half time.

Bassett started strongly pushing hard to find a goal to get back into the game. There were plenty of half chances for Bassett but St. Nich's were able to hold onto their 2 goal lead with some good defending, still managing to causing bassett problems at the other end. The second period was very much being played in the St Nich's half of the pitch, with 15 minutes left Bassett managed to get the ball into the net. A snap shot from Yazz Sprat was saved by the St Nich's keeper and a mass scramble started with 3 other shots blocked before Jenna McFadzean poked the ball home from 2 yards.

The goal gave Bassett hope of pinching something from the game, time was running out and with 5 minutes left St Nich's managed to kill the game with a 3rd goal a miscommunication in the Bassett defence led to a 1 on 1 on the Bassett goal, just before that goal Bassett had to rely on Samantha Wood to make a last ditch save, but this only staved off Bassett first defeat of the season the legs had gone from all the hard work.

Full time 1 – 3 St. Nich's

St Nicholas deserved the win but a very good second half performance from Bassett pushing them all the way.
