Liden Too Strong for Under 16 Bs

Sunday 3rd May 2009 - Liden Community (County Ground)

The underdog failed to prevail in the under 16s showpiece, with Liden Community beating Wootton Bassett Town B 4-1.

The scoreline somewhat flattered the victors though, as the younger Bassett side – champions of Division Two – remained firmly in the game until two late Liden goals sealed the contest.

After Bassett squandered two early one-on-one chances, Nathan Hudson gave Liden the lead on the quarter hour mark.

Tyler Lane's testing cross from the left was initially mishit, but this played into Liden–s advantage as the scuffed effort froze the Bassett defence and ensured Hudson only had to tap in.

After taking the lead, they stamped their control on the game, with Hudson prevented only by a composed save from Dave Groom in the latter stages of the half.

Six minutes after the restart their lead was doubled when Lane pounced on a loose ball and gave Groom no chance with a 25-yard strike.

A goalline clearance from the impressive Aaron Palmer denied Robbie Ali at the other end, but the forward eventually netted to halve the deficit, sliding the ball coolly under Kevin Campbell after a Joe Shepherd through pass.

The game was firmly in the balance until a Lane square pass allowed Lawrie Smith to fire into the top corner before Matty Beauchamp bundled in a Hudson cross.

Man of the Match: Robbie Ali – ensured Liden's brilliant sweeper Aaron Palmer had something to think about with his pace and hustle. His goal was brilliantly taken, and he was unlucky not to have been on the scoresheet more than once.
