Wickham Late Show Stuns Valiant Bassett

Saturday 2nd May 2009 - Wickham Wanderers (County Ground)

A mesmerising final five minutes decided the outcome of a fantastic under 13s final.

Trailing 3-2, it appeared that Jesse Bowers had equalised for Wickham Wanderers after he beat Wootton Bassett Town 'keeper Joe Viveash to the ball. But a desperate, acrobatic goalline clearance from Josh Hulbert kept his side ahead.

However, the resulting corner wasn't cleared and Marcus Guest nipped in at the left hand post to head home the equaliser.

The tie, which ebbed and flowed throughout, appeared destined for extra time, but Max Nichols had other ideas.

The Bassett defence were caught out by a long, cross-field ball and Nichols raced onto it before firing past Viveash to seal the comeback victory for Wickham.

They had taken the lead 20 minutes when man of the match Albie Oakman reacted first to a Viveash spill and was able to poke home.

However, within three minutes the scores were levelled with the first of three superb, long range efforts, which led to Bassett goals.

Tyler Amos struck the ball perfectly and the ball sailed into the top right corner from 30 yards.

The advantage swung back in Wickham's favour on the stroke of half time. Oakman cut in from the right and squared to Charlie de Fraine, who fired emphatically home from 18 yards.

Amos grabbed his second with a cross-come-shot from the left wing minutes after the restart, prompting a spell of Bassett dominance.

Dale rattled the upright with a ferocious effort before Sam Lowkis narrowly missed the target moments later.

They finally took the lead with ten minutes remaining as Dale Richards found the back of a net with a rasping 35 yard drive.

After Hulbert's fine clearance the game appeared to be safe, however drama quickly ensued.

Man of the Match: Tyler Amos – scored two stunning goals and gave the Wickham defence a torrid time, working tirelessly throughout.
