Poor defending lets Bassett down

Rylands was buzzing in anticipation for another Bassett win, Mike and Chris had got a number of the reserve team lads knocking hard on the first team managers door and with the visit of a Highworth who also play a very attractive style play with some very rapid and lethal strikers the game should be entertaining which is what it turned out to be.

Bassett started as if they were still in the changing room and found themselves two down after ten minutes, Bassett were making some very basic errors that Manager Mike Hartley would have been tearing his hair out.

Bassett then decided that they better start playing and pulled a goal back through Steve Bunting and then drew level through Justin Hyde. Bassett were now in complete control and took the lead through a second goal from Hyde.

The halftime whistle sounded and an incredible half was over with probably both managers demanding more focus from their teams when defending.

To Mike′s disbelief the second half started in the same way as the first with Highworth scoring two games within five minutes from yet again some very poor defending. Bassett then had an opportunity to draw level; Hyde′s shot beat the Highworth keeper but came back off the upright.

For all of Bassett′s pressure and the changes made they couldn′t perform the same recover as the first half and rightly got nothing from a game that their performance was a backward step.

A very disappointed Bassett manger Mike Hartley talked after the game "Les has a very good team with a striker that I rate very highly and you can′t defend the way we did and expect to get something from the game, I wasn′t too hard on the lads as they are still learning and these sort of games do come along but we have to learn from them and make sure we don′t keep repeating the same mistakes. We missed a great opportunity to move up the league tonight but we didn′t want to work for it, It just shows the lads that a couple of wins doesn′t mean that they just have to turn up to get the points."
