Bassett secure the treble

Red-hot favourites Wootton Bassett won the Wiltshire Girls Football League Cup by beating Chippenham 2-0.

Bassett, unbeaten this season, were on the back foot as their opponents opened strongly in a keenly-fought encounter.

Two early saves from Lizzy Archer set the tone for the first quarter of the match with both keepers called into action.

The deadlock was broken after 20 minutes. A long throw-in from Rosie Spalding was swiftly controlled and stabbed home by Kelsey Johnstone to give Bassett a slender lead.

The remainder of the first period followed a similar pattern with Chippenham's appeal for a penalty for pushing being turned down right on the whistle.

The second half opened with both sides playing hard but fairly in an evenly-matched period.

Several chances started to emerge as the final quarter saw Chippenham push as many players forward as they dared but Archer and her defence stood firm.

With five minutes remaining it was Bassett who made sure of victory with an excellent break out leading to Megan Brakes feeding the ball through to Spalding, who coolly netted in the corner.

Bassett therefore completed a unique treble the Wiltshire League and Cup and the Oxfordshire League title.
