In a match played in Indian summer type conditions, Wootton Bassett Under 16s struggled to find their early pre-season form last weekend. While the game remained goal less for the first 15 minutes, Alex Orton then popped up at the far post to deflect a cross into the net off his thigh to record his second goal so far this season. Spurred on by this success, Bassett stepped up a gear and it came as no surprise when Michael Vevers scored from close range after good approach work from Tom Hughes. And Bassett continued to seek another goal and their efforts were rewarded when Aaron Lightbody nipped in to take his season's tally to 11.

After this, Bassett went to sleep for a period. This allowed the visitors back into the game when a ball was adjudged to have crossed the line despite Bassett protests. Bassett, however, quickly restored their advantage when Aaron Lightbody scored in front of a hesitant defence to make the score line 4-1 approaching half-lime. Bassett failed to maintain this. though, and allowed the visitors back into the game when the referee played on from an off-side flag which enabled the visitors to reduce the deficit to 4-2. Half-time came quickly for Bassett with a chance to restore lost energies.

Play began after the interval with each side knowing the next goal was likely to be crucial. The second half stalemate was finally broken 15 minutes from the end. After Aaron Lightbody was brought down unfairly in the box, Bassett's ice-cool penalty king, Danny Thomas, slotted home to give the home side breathing space which was maintained until the final whistle. All in all, a workmanlike performance with some areas still to be improved
