Bassett Take The Points at League Leaders

Last Saturday saw Bassett travel to league leaders Cheltenham Saracens. Cheltenham has never been an easy place to go too as the surroundings are uninspiring. Barry made two changes to the previous weeks side bringing in Jon Davis at right back and Lee Stoddart replacing Roger Smith up front. Bassett started badly and Cheltenham were kept at by Rich Stevens and Paul Davis who clearing under pressure collided with the post and required treatment. Bassett almost scored in the 15th minute when Stoddart rounded his marker in the box and who knows how the Saracens keeper made the save. Bassett from then on always look the more dangerous and the back four having overcome early nerves dealt better with the Saracens forward line. Just before the interval Flavell was caught late but no yellow card was produced.

Bassett started the second have at a pace. On 49mms it was no surprise that they took the lead. Goodwin played Stoddart through and his perfect pass saw Ian Curtis smash the ball high into the top left-hand corner. Bassett now controlled the game from defence where Rich Stevens handling was superb all afternoon, to the forwards who defended from the front and look like scoring every time Bassett broke forward. Bassett had the chances to make victory safe but chances to Merchant, Stoddart, Newton and Goodwin went begging. It would be unfair to single out any one player for man of the match but Rich Stevens handling was a pleasure to watch.
