Royal Wootton Bassett Town kept their fifth consecutive league clean sheet - and their eleventh in sixteen South West Regional Women's Football League Division One games played so far this season - as they recorded a vital 3-0 victory away at Gloucester City Reserves.
Bassett did what they needed to do against a stubborn Gloucester side on an afternoon when title rivals Corsham Town's came from behind to win at Bath City and Bitton were also victorious, beating Stockwood Wanderers. Meanwhile, Mangotsfield United and Whitchurch's 4-4 draw meant they both lost ground.
Although enjoying the better of the chances, it took until shortly after the half hour mark for Bassett to take the lead. But they did so with an incisive, fluid move. Poppy Wannell's tackle saw the ball into the feet of Laura Jefferies. From the halfway line she clipped a pass into the path of path of Honor Fraser who fed Lauren Bulley to slot coolly into the bottom corner.
Bassett doubled their lead shortly after the restart. Tori Taylor's ball over the top led to panic in the Gloucester defence and after a wayward clearance, Wannell took full advantage, steering in from a tight angle.
Hannah Gulliver then sealed victory, stealing possession before charging down on goal and producing a composed one-on-one finish.
Next up for Bassett is the Wiltshire County Cup final against Swindon Town before a pair of decisive league fixtures away at Bitton and at home against Mangotsfield.
