Goalless draw sees Bassett lose ground

Royal Wootton Bassett Town's visit to fellow South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North title contenders Whitchurch ended all square as both teams lost ground on leaders Corsham Town.

Although a fair result in a contest which saw both sides have their share of chances, a draw was a result that does neither side any favour in the run in towards the end of the season.

That was especially the case given Corsham triumphed 4-1 at Downend Flyers, a result that increased their lead over Bassett to five points.

James Lally's side do still possess two games in hand over their Wiltshire rivals. But the stalemate at Whitchurch has no doubt upped the pressure for Bassett's remaining seven fixtures - which include dates with Bitton and Mangotsfield United, both of who also find themselves in the mix at the top.

None of the teams vying for the title have a favourable run in.

Indeed all teams have at least two games to play against each other.

Corsham must visit Whitchurch and host Bitton. As well as Corsham, Whitchurch have to face Mangotsfield. Mangotsfield's last four games pit them against Whitchurch, Bassett and Bitton (twice). That also means Bitton have four to play against their fellow contenders.

April and May therefore promise more twists and turns in what has been an enthralling, closely fought season.

Bassett now have a break over Easter in which they will hope to dig out their scoring boots ahead of the crucial run in.
