Royal Wootton Bassett Town Development began their 2024-25 Wiltshire League Premier Division campaign with a 3-1 defeat away against Pewsey Vale.
Visiting a Pewsey side who finished third last season - their third consecutive top three placing, Mark Simpkins' team were always set for a stern test to open the new season.
And while putting in a competitive performance, Bassett fell short largely thanks to the class of the experienced James Guthrie who netted a hat-trick for the hosts - including one from the penalty spot.
Afonso Ferreira was on target for Bassett, but his goal was not enough.
Bassett will aim to get off the mark on Tuesday evening when they entertain local rivals Blunsdon in their first competitive home fixture of the season (Gerard Buxton Sports Ground AGP, 8.15pm).
