Four in a row as clinical Bassett seal home series sweep

Four games, four victories, eleven goals for and just two against. Safe to say Royal Wootton Bassett Town have enjoyed their dominant four game homestand that has put Jonny Aitkenhead's side on the cusp of breaking into the top half of the Hellenic League Premier Division.

Bassett rounded off that stretch with a convincing 3-1 win against Thornbury Town, avenging their opening day defeat against the Gloucestershire side while pulling ten points clear of their opponents.

Following a goalless opening period, Bassett took the lead early in the second half. Rudi Hopkins floated in a corner that Ciaran Walsh flicked on towards the far post, and Kian McNally was on hand to instinctively volley in from close range.

Bassett then doubled their lead through Hopkins who made it nine goals in nine games. McNally's swept a towering crossfield free kick to Ollie Smith on the right wing. Smith swung in a first time cross, picking out Hopkins, who wrong footed the 'keeper with a stabbed finish.

It was soon 3-0. Ed Taylor and TJ Bohane combined well together in the final third with the latter feeding George Cook in the left channel. He delivered a first time cross into the box which his opposite number at wing back Smith glanced into the bottom right corner.

Although well beaten, Thornbury were able to grab a consolation as Will Fowler headed in from a corner late on.

For Bassett, it was an impressive way to round off a hugely impressive run of games.

A tough March run awaits as Aitkenhead's young charges face four of the five sides in the hunt for the title - beginning with a midweek trip to Slimbridge.

But, on song and in excellent form, Bassett will relish rather than fear those tests as they seek to continue their climb up the table.
