Bassett suffer Lydney defeat

Lydney Recreation Ground, Saturday 13th September 2025

Royal Wootton Bassett Town fell to a 3-0 defeat away against Lydney Town in their latest Hellenic League Premier Division fixture.

Jonny Aitkenhead's side became the first team to suffer defeat against the Severnsiders this season as Lydney - who have strengthened in recent weeks - claimed a deserved victory.

Key to Lydney's victory was forward Matt Green. A well travelled, ex-professional he scored a first half brace that put the hosts in control of the match.

Green opened the scoring on the quarter hour mark, heading in from a corner

With half an hour he then made it 2-0 from the penalty spot as Lydney affirmed their dominance of the match.

Bassett have been on a frustrating run and so it was perhaps understandable that, finding themselves in a losing position against a side who they comfortably saw off in an FA Cup replay last month, emotions would get the better of them.

But they could have done without the rush of blood to the head that Ed Taylor had midway through the second period when he lunged in on Junior Kposowa and received a red card.

Further salt was then rubbed into Bassett's wounds late on when Morgan Ewing added Lydney's third.

Overall it was an afternoon to forget, with Bassett now tasked with bouncing back at home against Cribbs next week in a fixture that is vital they win.
