Late Centurions equaliser denies Bassett

Gerard Buxton Sports Ground, Saturday 9th August 2025

A first half Ben Cleary goal and resolute defensive display seemingly had Royal Wootton Bassett Town on their way to a first Hellenic League Premier Division victory of the season. However a late Cirencester Town equaliser denied Bassett all three points in a tense derby encounter at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground.

Jonny Aitkenhead's side had been on top throughout the first half and deservedly went into the break ahead.

Another energetic display was rewarded midway through the half when Ben Cleary produced a neat turn and finish for the impressive youngster's fourth goal in the past three games.

The second half, however, saw Bassett dragged into Cirencester's direct game as the visitors sought to get on terms.

That led to Bassett coming under significant pressure. However, while the hosts' defence bent, for the majority of the half they did not break.

And Aitkenhead's were unfortunate not to double their lead when a counter ended with player of the match Cleary seeing an effort strike the bar.

Eventually though Cirencester's pressure told when, with less than five minutes of time remaining, the prolific Harlie Price produced a cool finish to level the contest.

It was arguably a goal that Cirencester deserved for their second half endeavour, though Bassett - despite earning a solid point - will be slightly frustrated not to have held out.

Bassett now go in search of their opening league victory of the season when newly promoted Hallen are the visitors on Wednesday.
