What a game this one turned out to be. The visitors went in front thanks to a long-range effort from a player who turned out to be over age and was eventually taken off by the visitors after ten minutes when this fact became known. Bassett got themselves back into the match thanks to an excellent goal from David Lazenby who weaved his way through the Athelstan defence and hit an unstoppable shot into the net. The visitors regained the lead, but Bassett replied with two goals, one from Mike Ford and one from a Dean Wason lob. Bassett extended their lead when Robert Leighfield hit a tremendous, long range shot over the goalkeeper into the net for what was the best goal of the day. Bassett went further in front when a Dean Wason shot was deflected into the net.

At this point Bassett were cruising at 5-2 but things went to pieces in the last ten minutes. Thanks to sloppy defending Bassett allowed the visitors to score three times including yet another own goal by a Bassett defender. In the final minute, a rare Peter Willis goal looked to have sealed victory for Bassett but Athelstan went straight down the other end from the kick-off equalising with just about the last kick of the match. This was certainly an eventful match which will not be remembered for its defending! Bassett man of the match: David Lazenby
