Weekend preview: Derby clash as Bassett seek to end Corsham curse

Wednesday 28th February 2024

There's set to be a derby double at the Gerard Buxton Sports on Saturday with Royal Wootton Bassett Town's Men's First and Development sides facing local rivals. Meanwhile, this Sunday also sees the Women's First Team in home action.

Game of the weekend involving Bassett's senior teams is no doubt the Hellenic League Premier Division top of the table clash against fellow high-flyers Corsham Town (Sustain Stadium, 3pm kick off).

Since entering the Hellenic League, the Quarrymen have more than had Bassett's number. They have won all five league encounters - a streak that includes a 7-1 drubbing they inflicted on Sam Collier's side in August, while also triumphing on penalties in the third round of last season's FA Vase.

Saturday is therefore a chance for Bassett to cast aside that curse, earn a first win against Corsham since the 2008-09 season - and narrow the gap to the division's second place side.

The games don't come much tougher - but it has the potential to be an exciting Wiltshire derby.

Admission is £7 for adults, £4 for concessions and free for RWBTFC youth members.

Also on Saturday the Development team entertain near neighbours Calne Town Reserves in the Wiltshire League Premier Division (Gerard Buxton Sports Ground AGP, 2pm).

Admission for that fixture is £4 for adults, £2 for concessions and free for RWBTFC youth members.

Then on Sunday the Women's First Team host Bath City for the second week in a row (Sustain Stadium, 2pm).

This time the teams meet in the second round of the South West Regional Women's Football League Divisional Cup.

Admission is £4 for adults, £2 for concessions and free for RWBTFC youth members.
