Under 14 sides storm to another double

Tuesday 30th November 2021

On a weather-impacted weekend, Royal Wootton Bassett Town's Under 14 sides were the only two youth section teams in action to record victories.

A fortnight after they were both victorious on the same weekend for the first time this season, they repeated that feat in impressive fashion.

The Under 14 Blues edged out Blunsdon Youth 2-1 thanks to goals from Samuel Britton and Corbin Ellis.

While they may perhaps have expected to achieve a larger margin of victory against a side second from bottom in North Wilts League Division Two, Bassett nonetheless demonstrated great character to seal a win in difficult conditions.

The triumph was the Blues' third in a row and lifts them to third in the table – just two points behind second place Marlborough Youth with three games in hand still to play.

Meanwhile the Under 14 Yellows scored six goals without reply against Ashton Keynes Youth to complete a season double over their opponents in Division Four.

Elsewhere, both the Under 12 Yellow and Under 18 Yellow teams suffered agonising, single goal defeats.

The Under 12 Yellows were beaten 5-4 at home against unbeaten league leaders FC Chippenham Youth Kestrels, who Bassett pushed all the way.

An Aleksander Goralczyk goal was not enough to prevent the Yellows from trailing 2-1 at the break. But Daisy Bundy, Stanley Lockley and Goralczyk struck after half time to give Bassett hope of taking something from the game. However, the visitors held on for the win.

In a tight contest against FC Calne Youth Hurricanes – who went into their meeting just a point above Bassett, the Under 18 Yellows lost by the odd goal in five.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the interval before Calne struck twice in the second half and Bassett only once. Jacob Rendell-Haines netted both Bassett goals.

In North Wilts League Cup second round action, the Under 15 Blues saw their hopes of an upset against Division One opponents and a place in the quarter finals dashed as they lost 2-0 away against FC Abbey Meads Youth Grey.

And in league action, the Under 16 Blues fell to a 4-0 home defeat against runaway Division One leaders Cirencester Town Centurions.

At the non-competitive age groups, Bassett's Under 10 Blues were in North Wilts League Trophy action, playing at home against FC Chippenham Youth Bulls. In a game with plenty of goals, it was the Bulls who took their place in the quarter finals.

Trophy Event games are designed to be short-term experiences helping children learn about winning and losing in an appropriate environment, and are held for teams across the Under 9 to 11 age groups.
