Cup doubleheader this weekend

Sunday 25th August 2019

It's set to be an important weekend of cup football for Royal Wootton Bassett Town this weekend as the club's senior men's and women's teams compete in the Buildbase FA Vase and Women's FA Cup.

On Friday night, the first team make the short journey across Swindon to take on New College in the FA Vase First Qualifying round (Supermarine Sports and Social Club, 7.45pm kick off).

Bassett will go into the game as heavy favourites against their Division One West opponents. But they will need to be on form to avoid an upset. Manager Sam Collier, whose team will be well-rested, will also be hoping for a high-quality performance that can provide confidence for a testing run of home fixtures that follows their Vase engagement.

The winners of the tie will travel to face Wessex League Premier Division outfit Tadley Calleva in the Second Qualifying round on Saturday 14th September.

Then on Sunday Bassett's Ladies team play their first competitive fixture of the 2019-20 campaign against Chipping Sodbury Town in a Women's FA Cup Preliminary round encounter (Gerard Buxton Sports Ground, 2pm kick off).

Entering the competition for the eighth time, Bassett will be hoping to record only their second ever win, having exited at the first hurdle in five consecutive seasons since defeating Cheltenham Civil Service 1-0 in the 2013-14 Preliminary round.

Bassett, who this year begin life in the South West Regional Women's Football League Premier Division, will also be favourites in this tie, with Chipping Sodbury playing a step below in the South West Northern Division.

However, the Sods will be confident going into the 2019-20 season. They earned promotion after finishing in third place in the Gloucestershire County Women's League last year, while they also reached the final of the Gordon Perrett Memorial Cup.

Entry for Sunday's game is £2.
