Veterans Blue confirmed as Flexi League runners-up

Tuesday 9th July 2019

The latest edition of the Wiltshire FA Veterans Flexi League came to a conclusion this week, and, despite not being in action, Royal Wootton Bassett Town's Blue team were confirmed as league runners-up.

A top two finish had already been secured by virtue of a comfortable 3-0 victory against AFC Swindon in their final fixture played two weeks ago. But Bassett were still in with a chance at finishing as champions.

For that to happen, they required their Yellow team clubmates not to lose against Marlborough Town, who went into the game a point behind the Blues with an inferior goal difference.

With Marlborough having lost only once in this edition of the competition – a 1-0 defeat against the Blues at the start of April – they were favourites to seal the title again. That pressure did not get to them though as they saw off the Yellows 4-1, with Ben Gould netting for Bassett.

The result meant the Blues had to settle for second place. Having won ten and drawn one of their twelve games (suffering their only defeat in the reverse fixture against Marlborough), they can be proud of their record, even if there is some frustration at having come so close to the title.

It's the second time Bassett have finished as runners-up, having done so in the Winter 2017-18 edition of the Flexi League.

With a county-wide Veterans league set for the 2019-20 season, their thoughts can now turn to reaching the summit of that.
