North Wilts League Cup semi final draws announced

Thursday 10th January 2019

Draws for the semi finals of the North Wilts League Cup have been announced, with Royal Wootton Bassett Town's Under 18, 16 and 15 Blue sides now knowing who will stand in their way of a place in the final.

All ties will take place on Sunday 31st March at Beversbrook in Calne.

Under 16 Blue v Cirencester Town Centurions

If they are to lift the League Cup for the third year in a row – and fourth time in five years – then the Under 16 Blues will first need to get past Cirencester Town Centurions, the only team they have suffered defeat against so far this season.

That defeat came back in September and has left Bassett playing catch-up in Division One. But, losing only by the odd goal in three, they will be confident they can reverse their fortunes in the cup.

Bassett's run to the last four has been a tricky one as they have had to face Division One rivals in each round. They saw off Highworth Town Juniors T 3-1 in the second round before sealing a 5-2 quarter final triumph against Shrivenham.

Cirencester, meanwhile, received a walkover in the second round against Lydiard Millicent Juniors before beating Chippenham Town Youth 8-0 in the last eight.

The winner will face either Kings Stanley or Wanborough Juniors Black in the final.

The Under 16 Blues are also still alive in the Wiltshire County Cup – another competition they won in 2017-18 – and have been paired with Wanborough Juniors Yellow in the quarter finals.

Under 18 Blue v Highworth Town Juniors H

The Under 18 Blues will take on Highworth Town Juniors H, the side that overcame Bassett's Yellow squad in the previous round, in their semi final tie.

Highworth, who are currently sitting joint top of Division Two, have racked up the goals in the competition, beating Croft Junior Blue 16-1 before their 7-0 triumph against Bassett Yellow.

But they will be facing a Bassett Blue outfit in the last four who are full of confidence and fighting on three fronts as they sit top of Division One and are into the last eight of the Wiltshire Youth Cup (where they will play Malmesbury Victoria Youth Development).

In the North Wilts League knockout competition, they have chalked up wins over Shrivenham (by a walkover) and Malmesbury (4-2 after extra time) to make it this far.

Cirencester Town or Stratton Juniors Pumas await in the final.

Under 15 Blue v Castle Combe Colts

The Under 15 Blues will have to be on their guard to avoid an upset in their semi final as they take on Division Two outfit Castle Combe Colts.

Bassett have been enjoying an excellent season, losing only once while also reaching the last eight of the County Cup (a competition in which their opponents are still to be determined).

And they have already twice seen off Division Two opposition to make it through this far in the North Wilts League Cup. Starting in the second round, they defeated FC Chippenham Youth Blues – who are currently above Castle Combe – 10-0 before a 5-1 win against FC Calne Blue.

Castle Combe's journey to the final four has been an eventful one. In round one, they defeated league rivals Liden Community by the odd goal in seven. That was followed by a more comfortable 7-3 win away against Northside Athletic before they defeated Division One side Purton Youth 2-1 in a home quarter final.

Division One pacesetters FC Chippenham Youth White and Swindon Supermarine J will contest the other semi final.

They should be three excellent, exciting ties and here's hoping that, come the end of March, all three of Bassett's representative will have advanced to the final and a chance to play for silverware!
