Sunday side crowned champions

Sunday 13th May 2018

Congratulations to Royal Wootton Bassett Town's Sunday side who were crowned champions of Swindon Sunday League Division Two today.

Bassett are guaranteed top spot following today's narrow 2-1 defeat for nearest challengers Eldene against Croft Junior FC.

The title would likely have been secured in midweek. However, Bassett's scheduled fixture against Wanborough was cancelled due to their opponents not being able to raise a team. It is expected that the three points for that game will be awarded in Bassett's favour, which itself would have been enough to seal top spot. But with that still outstanding, Eldene's loss now means it is mathematically impossible for them to catch Bassett.

Bassett have dominated the division this season, losing just one game, while drawing twice. They have been phenomenal in front of goal too, scoring 139 times, while conceding just nineteen. Six players have made it into double figures: Danny Hale finished as the team's top scorer with thirty goals, one ahead of Lewis Petrie. Meanwhile, Jack Duckers, Josh Morse, Marcus Hall and Ryan Thomas also found the back of the net at least ten times.

The team was introduced this season, with the idea spearheaded by Vice-Chairman Danny Groom, in order to offer another senior football pathway. And throughout the season they have featured players who have previously appeared at all levels for the club, be that within the youth or senior sections or, in some cases, both.

With the Division Two title achieved this season, the Sunday side will hope to go from strength to strength next season and compete in Division One.
