Ladies earn valuable point in Swindon stalemate

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Ladies kept their South West Women's League Eastern Division title hopes on track with a 0-0 draw away against fellow contenders Swindon Town Development.

For the second time in five days, Royal Wootton Bassett Town Ladies were unable to find a way past Swindon Town Development. But, after Sunday's Wiltshire Women's Cup defeat, they bounced back to earn what could be a vitally important point with a goalless draw in the South West Women's League Eastern Division that keeps their title hopes firmly on track.

The stalemate was the outcome of a tense game, with the two teams perhaps still suffering some tiredness from what had been an entertaining encounter in the County Cup showpiece.

That meant that there were chances for both teams.

Swindon arguably had the better opportunities in the first half. Kathryn Bach had a pair of chances before Elle Scott headed Meghan Larkin's corner onto the post.

After the restart, Bassett demonstrated attacking intent and perhaps had the best opening of the second period when she stepped past Carla Heaton before placing a shot into the side netting from an angle.

Late on, Helena Diaz-Butcher came close twice for Swindon, dragging wide and firing into the clutches of Sam Wood in the Bassett goal.

Bassett will arguably be the more pleased with the result. They do fall to second in the table after Portishead Town convincingly defeated FC Chippenham earlier in the week. But Becky Gammon's team trail by just a single point and, crucially, hold a game in hand.

Swindon are a further five points adrift with six games still to play, including the return fixture against Bassett and both games against Portishead.

There's therefore still plenty to play for.
