Bassett into Floodlit Cup last eight

Royal Wootton Bassett Town advanced to the Perpetua Press Floodlit Cup quarter finals with a 2-1 victory away against local rivals Highworth Town.

It was a long time coming - an abandonment and postponement having forced its delay - but the Floodlit Cup third round tie between Royal Wootton Bassett Town and Highworth Town finally got played. And a closely fought contest saw Bassett prevail by the odd goal in three and book a place in the quarter finals of a competition that traditionally has not been kind to them.

Given their team selection, it was clear Highworth's priorities lay elsewhere.

But for Bassett, the competition offers the last opportunity to earn some silverware this year and that's not something they are going to turn down the chance to fight for.

That was clear from the start too, as Ben Lodge put the visitors ahead with just five minutes on the clock.

The lead was then doubled midway through the opening period as Kai Robinson grabbed his first goal of the season.

With a two goal advantage, Bassett were largely in control of the game. However, Jordan Clark's strike with twenty minutes remaining ensured a testing conclusion to the game, though victory was ultimately secured.
