Young guns Meare and Comer headline Bassett award winners

Saturday 13th May 2017

Goalkeeper Curtis Meare and defender Dan Comer were named Royal Wootton Bassett Town Players' Player and Manager's Player of the Year respectively as the club celebrated the 2016-17 season at its senior section presentation evening.

The young duo were consistent quality performers for Bassett during a campaign which saw them finish eleventh in the Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division.

Meare was outstanding between the sticks, putting in a number of man of the match performances, while producing countless outstanding saves. In all, he took a massive step in his development.

After impressing for Bassett in his first full season of senior football in 2015-16, the 'keeper began this year with Thatcham Town before moving back to the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground in September.

And he made an immediate impact, keeping a clean sheet in a 2-0 home win against Brimscombe and Thrupp. He went on to make another 35 appearances and kept six more clean sheets.

Comer was another player who shone in his second season with Bassett.

The 20-year-old, somewhat unfortunate not to have taken one of the Player of the Year trophies following his debut campaign, was Bassett's leading appearance maker in 2016-17, playing 43 times.

The defender, calm on the ball, solid in the tackle and mature in his play, featured in all positions along the back four and acquitted himself expertly.

Meanwhile, it was a fantastic evening for Reserve and Under 18s star Martin Sinclair and Ladies midfielder Amber Egerton.

Sinclair, a key member of the Wiltshire County FA Under 18 representative side, completed the treble, winning the Under 18s Manager's Player, and the Reserves Players' Player and Manager's Player awards.

Egerton, a midfielder workhorse who netted four times, picked up both Ladies team awards as Becky Gammon's side celebrated their most successful season yet. Runners-up in Division One of the Gloucestershire County Women's League, they take on Almondsbury UWE in the final of the Gordon Perrett Memorial Cup next Sunday.

Tom Miller, leading scorer for the Under 18s, was the final player to be honoured on the night as he took home the Wiltshire Floodlit League team's Players' Player award.

A further two prizes were presented on the night.

Jules Caton picked up the Ladies Clubperson of the Year. Initially intending to serve as the team's goalkeeper coach, circumstances meant she was called upon to don the gloves throughout the season and she did so admirably.

Club secretary Ian Thomas was then presented with the Senior Clubman of the Year prize for his sterling efforts throughout the year, which have also seen him assume responsibility for youth section matters.
