Veterans Flexi League

Wednesday 20th April 2016

The second installment of the Wiltshire FA Veterans Flexi League is now underway, and Royal Wootton Bassett Town are again represented.

After the success of the inaugural competition, held on the 3G pitch at the New Gerard Buxton Sports Ground between November and February, the County FA have organised a second competition which has attracted six sides.

The Veterans Flexi League is aimed at offering football to those who cannot commit to weekly sessions and is an alternative to typical Saturday/Sunday football, while also keeping those aged 35 and over involved in the game.

In this edition Bassett - aiming to better their fourth place finish - will be facing Hathaways, CJ Marlborough, KMLC and Trowbridge Tigers again, with new opponents in the form of FC Nexus. Reigning champions Swindon Centurions have not entered this time around.

The 'hosts' kicked off their campaign on Tuesday 19th April against Trowbridge and, just like they did in the first Flexi League, kept a clean sheet against their opponents as they recorded a 2-0 victory. Drew Youngsam scored both Bassett goals.

In their second game, Bassett shared six goals in a 3-3 thriller against FC Nexus. Steve Shaw scored the team's first before Steve Howse grabbed a brace to secure a point.

Bassett were well beaten in their third contest, falling to a 4-0 defeat against CJ Marlborough - who were 5-0 winners in their opening two games.

A late Simon Jones goal ensured a return to winning away in a 1-0 victory against KMLC, who had taken three points in the two games they had played prior to meeting Bassett.

The Veterans then finished their campaign with a seven goal thriller against Hathaways. The 4-3 victory Bassett recorded courtesy of a Youngsam hat trick and Shaw strike helped them leapfrog KMLC to snatch runners-up spot.
