Good performance in friendly despite defeat

Despite the final result Bassett should not feel too disappointed as they put in another good performance in a cracking match at Rylands Way. In the first half there was little to choose between the two sides, although the Athlestan keeper was certainly the busier of the two. He pulled off two tremendous saves to deny the Bassett strikers Sean Toomey and Philip Tearle but the two sides turned around at half time goalless.

The second half again saw the two teams involved in a flowing game of football, but it was the visitors who began to get on top and took the lead with a well taken goal. They then extended the lead thanks to an unfortunate own goal following a corner and went further in front following a lapse in the Bassett defence. Bassett certainly did not deserve to be three goals down but the visitor's keeper continued to deny the home side. Bassett did eventually find the net when a long range effort from Tom Marchment found its way into the goal off the far post. A draw would have probably been a fair result but Bassett, without their two players who have made the Swindon & District League Representative squad, just didn't have their shooting boots on today.
