Girls’ Section Review: Mia magic as Under 14s top tight match

Sunday 8th February 2026

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Under 14 Girls faced a strong Marlborough Youth Raiders side at home on Saturday, where they just edged the away side 4-3 in a tight, gritty match.

Bassett started well and took the lead early on. Sienna Matthews sent a dangerous ball in from a corner which, Marlborough failed to clear. Mia Hughes pounced on the loose ball and slotted it home to give her team the advantage.

This lead didn't last for long, however, as Marlborough were quick to react and got a goal back through a good passage of play that split the Bassett defence in half.

The Blues weren't deterred and pushed for a second goal. Mia and Sienna continued to combine well, and their hard work paid off when Sienna provided the assist for Mia's brace.

The away side continued to match Bassett like for like and pulled an equaliser back before half time.

The teams went into the break at two goals apiece.

The second half continued in a similar fashion, with a repeated pattern of goals.

Sienna was on fire and set Mia up once again, who was able to calmly put the ball away and secure a well-earned hat-trick.

Unfortunately, the away side equalised soon after this. The ball took an unlucky deflection off a Bassett defender and went into the net.

Mia was on hand to restore the Blues their lead though with a fourth goal, once again assisted by Sienna.

The home side managed to hold on until the final whistle for the win.

The game finished 4-3 to Bassett, with Sienna and Mia both picking up Player of the Match for outstanding combination in front of goal.

The result means Bassett are seven points clear at the top of North Wilts League Division One, with the pressure on Tyrone Mings Youth Hurricanes and Durrington Seahawks to win their games in hand.
