Festive Preview: Bassett aim for upset before Ciren derby

Tuesday 16th December 2025

Royal Wootton Bassett Town are set for a relatively quiet festive period with just two Hellenic League Premier Division fixtures between now and the new year.

But both are important games as Jonny Aitkenhead's side aim to extricate themselves from the danger zone and head into 2026 with a degree of momentum.

This Saturday Bassett have the chance to pull off an upset against title challengers Droitwich Spa when the Worcestershire side make their first ever visit to the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground (3pm kick off).

Bassett suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat in the reverse fixture - a game in which they arguably merited a point.

Droitwich come into the game on something of an indifferent run, having won just one of their last four in all competitions.

Droitwich have also found the going much more tough away from home in the league, taking 15 points from an available 30 compared to 28 from a possible 33 when boasting home advantage.

Do come along for Bassett's final home game of 2026 and give your strong backing to the team as they seek to spring a surprise!

Admission on Saturday is £8 for adults, £5 for concessions and free for RWBTFC youth members.

Bassett are then in derby action away at Cirencester Town on Saturday 27 December (3pm kick off).

An impressive league run has lifted the Centurions into the playoff mix - but they have yet to beat Bassett this season with the teams drawing 1-1 at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground before Aitkenhead's side triumphed 2-1 in a Challenge Cup fixture at the Corinium Stadium.

Bassett will therefore be looking to make it three unbeaten for the season against Cirencester in what promises to be a post Christmas cracker.
