Royal Wootton Bassett Town Under 13 Girls visited FC Abbey Meads Youth Blue in a very exciting league match on Saturday, With both teams level on points, this would decide who went second place in the North Wilts League Division One table.
The game got off to a flying start, with both teams battling hard and creating chances, but in the end it was Abbey Meads who took the lead with an unstoppable, long-range strike that went curling into the top corner. Bassett weren't deterred and kept going, but the first half ended with the score still at 1-0.
The girls still showed the same fighting spirit in the second half and pushed for an equaliser. Hollie Peachey even rattled the crossbar at one point, but they still couldn't manage to find the back of the net.
Things got tough when Bassett lost keeper Ella due to injury, but Aamira bravely stepped up in goal and kept a clean sheet.
The Blues finally got the goal they deserved with 2 minutes left to play. Ava Merwood-Palmer sent a brilliant ball into the box from a corner, and Christina Croft delivered an excellent header into the net. 1-1!
The girls held strong until the final whistle and managed to keep the score level, which was a great result against a strong Abbey Meads side.
Player of the match went to Olivia Cooper, who was solid in defence after returning from injury and made some great challenges at the back.
The Under 16s had a tough game at home against Ashton Keynes on Saturday, and things didn't quite go their way from the start.
The girls had to start the match with 10 players, and keeper Mia was under the weather, though she still stepped up bravely in goal.
Bassett started well and the game was pretty even for the first 25 minutes, but then Ashton Keynes sadly nicked two quick goals midway through, and a third before half time.
The Blues started the second half stronger, this time with all 11 players, and showed great fighting spirit.
However, although they played really well, they couldn't manage to find the back of the net. Instead, Ashton Keynes scored twice more.
The girls suffered a 5-0 defeat in the end, but the score didn't reflect the game.
Player of the match went to Daisy Bundy, who was outstanding player in several different attacking roles.
