Bank Holiday weekend preview: Trio of crucial clashes

Thursday 27th April 2023

There's a trio of crucial fixtures involving Royal Wootton Bassett Town sides this Bank Holiday weekend, with the Women's First Team involved in a title decider, the Under 18s playing their final fixture as they aim for honours and the Under 14 Blues in County Cup final action.

Sunday afternoon sees the Women's First Team visit Torquay United in the South West Regional Women's Football League Premier Division (2pm kick off).

While Bassett are aiming to pick up more vital points in their battle to avoid finishing bottom, there will be added drama if they avoid defeat for a third consecutive game as such an outcome would deny Torquay the title.

Indeed, the Gulls need to win what is their final game if they are to overhaul current leaders Bristol Rovers.

Torquay go into Sunday's game as clear favourites, having twice beaten Bassett already this season with 4-0 league win when the teams met in Wiltshire and a 5-2 Women's FA Cup triumph.

But the pressure is on Torquay as they play for the title.

Also on Sunday the Under 14 Blues face Swindon Supermarine White in the Wiltshire County Cup final.

The game takes place at the Wiltshire FA's Green Lane Playing Fields facility, 10.30am kick off.

After finishing as North Wilts League Division One runners-up in 2021-22 and Division Two champions the year before, Bassett are guaranteed honours for the third consecutive season.

And they will be hoping that impressive hat trick will be capped off by lifting the County Cup trophy.

Then on Monday the Under 18s finish their Wiltshire League Floodlit Division campaign with a trip to take on Radstock Town (7.45pm kick off).

Bassett need a result to keep alive their hopes of a top two finish – but they are in for a tough test against a Radstock side who triumphed 5-3 when the teams met at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground at the end of March.
