The Over 35s then take the field at 3pm.

Food and drinks will follow in the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground clubhouse.

We look forward to seeing you - and many others - at the event.

-

As a club, we are always proud to help build on the close ties between Royal Wootton Bassett and the armed forces, in particular the Royal Air Force.

Given the proximity to Lyneham, numerous individuals linked with the RAF - be they serving in the air force or their family members - have played, coached or volunteered for Bassett over the years.

And, in keeping with the town's motto - "We honour those who serve" - we hope hosting this event is a fitting way of showing our appreciation for everything the RAF have done for our town and country.

The Super Saturday event is the most important date in the calendar for Bassett's Veterans section, with strong relations having been built with the RAF FA over the course of nine years since the first edition in 2018.

And all events have been extremely well attended and supported.

It is therefore hoped that it will be the same this year.

-

Donations to the RAF Benevolent Fund can be made on their website at https://www.rafbf.org/.

Taylor thunderbolt delivers vital victory

A fine goal from Tori Taylor early in the second half earned Royal Wootton Bassett Town a potentially vital 1-0 victory against South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North title rivals Bitton.

The experienced Taylor produced a thunderbolt of a goal - her eighth of the season - from thirty yards out.

And that proved to be the only goal of a tight, tense battle as Bassett held out for their twelfth clean sheet in 17 league games - and sixth in a row.

This was therefore a night where the title race swung partly in Bassett's favour.

However there is still a long way to go.

Four wins from their remaining five games should be enough for Bassett to seal the title (barring a remarkable swing in goal difference).

But those five fixtures - beginning with the visit of Mangotsfield United on Sunday - will all be tough.

Bassett are also due to host Cirencester Town and Bath City - opponents they found the going tough against away from home, with a midweek visit to an improving Stockwood Wanderers and final day trip to Paulton Rovers also on the cards.

At least for now Bitton are playing catch up.

Weekend preview: Bassett set for must-win homecoming

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Women's First Team play their first fixture on home soil in seven weeks on Sunday - and it's a must-win South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North clash against fellow high-flyers Mangotsfield United (Gerard Buxton Sports Ground, 2pm kick off).

Mangotsfield have enjoyed an excellent season after promotion to tier six, but now find themselves out of the title race.

But the Mangos will have a significant role to play in determining who will lay their hands on the trophy with their three remaining fixtures pitting them against Bassett and Bitton (twice).

Bassett and Mangotsfield drew 2-2 when they met in the reverse fixture back in November - a game that saw James Lally's side let slip a 2-0 lead.

This time Bassett need a victory as they aim to maintain their title hopes.

Admission on Sunday is £4 for adults, £2 for concessions and free for RWBTFC youth members.

The girls faced Worton and Cheverell Under 12 for their first match of the group stage and started of the tournament in style. Bassett won 3-0 courtesy of a goal from Chloe Guppy and a brace from Christina Croft.

Their second game was against Blunsdon Under 13s, who Bassett were yet to beat in any competition. The teams matched each other like for like throughout, but it was unfortunately Blunsdon who took a last-minute lead after a free kick was deflected into the net.

However, Bassett still did enough to pull through into the semi-finals where they faced Blunsdon Under 12s.

For this match, Charlotte Heathcote tried out a new position, where she played brilliantly as a striker.
The opposition were looking strong after they took the lead in the first few seconds, firing the ball into the goal from the halfway line.

This took Bassett by surprise, but the girls weren't deterred and showed great determination, still believing they could get back in the game. Their hard work paid off when the ball found Molly Jackson at the edge of the box, who placed the ball calmly in the far bottom corner, bringing the score to 1-1.

Not long after, Christina Croft drove down the wing and delivered a pinpoint cross into Maddie Gay, who volleyed the ball into the roof of the net. This turned out to be the winning goal for Bassett and sent them through to the final!

In the final, the girls reunited with Blunsdon Under 13s, but this time they were looking to win. The match was nail-bitingly close, but both teams held on until the final whistle, with the game finishing goalless. This meant that the finalists would be heading straight to the dreaded penalties.

Bassett were cool, calm and collected throughout the shootout. Ava Merwood-Palmer, Chloe Guppy and Ella Oates converted the first three penalties, but so did Blunsdon, leading to sudden death.

There was more pressure now, with each team edging closer to a win. Maddie Gay almost ended the competition with the fourth penalty after a Blunsdon miss, but her strike was fired just wide.

The shootout continued, and the tension was starting to build. Christina Croft tucked away the next penalty alongside the opposition, and it looked like there would be no end to the match.

However, keeper Tia Campbell pulled off a great save to the next Blunsdon strike, leaving the fate of the game in Hollie Peachey's hands. She stepped and slotted the ball away with ease, winning the tournament for Bassett!

Kacy Gower had the honour of lifting the trophy for the club after showing great team spirit. Congratulations to the girls for a brilliant performance. Every single player played a part in the win.

Meanwhile, the Under 14s had their final league game of the season against Trowbridge Wanderers Lionesses, where they looked for a win that would improve their chances of finishing top in North Wilts League Division One.

Bassett started the match a little slow but soon grew into the game. The girls took an early lead when Mia Hughes broke through the defence and slotted the ball home to make the score 1-0.

The Blues came close to scoring multiple times throughout the half, with Mia hitting the post and Ava Hall striking the crossbar.

Ava eventually got a well-deserved goal after she dribbled past three Trowbridge players and fired the ball top corner. Bassett were 2-0 up going into half time.

The girls continued to dominate in the second half, and soon enough, a flurry of goals came in.

Eryn Turnball set up the third, playing in Ava who finished with her left foot for her second goal of the game.

After this, the floodgates opened and the Blues gained momentum.

Bassett were looking dangerous in attack. The ball fell to Eryn in front of goal, who's initial shot was saved, but Ava was on hand to slot the ball into the open net, claiming her hat trick.

Ava was on fire and soon scored a fourth. Alisa Allan crossed the ball into the box, and Ava finished first time to bring the score to 5-0. She took her goal well and was composed on the ball.

Some good play from Lily and Mia led to Alisa firing the ball into the bottom corner of the goal, giving Bassett a 6-0 lead!

More good work found Poppy in space, who finished and sealed off a brilliant 7-0 win for the Blues.

This was a strong finish to the league and a reasonably quiet morning for 'keeper Chloe and the backline.

Supporters Player of the Match was awarded to Ava for a strong performance and an incredible 4 goals.
Coaches Player of the Match went to Alisa, who had a great game in attack and linked up well with her teammates.

The next game for the Under 14s is the North Wilts League Cup final against Marlborough Youth Raiders on Sunday 17 May. Good luck girls!

The U11s played in their own league cup final where they suffered an unfortunate defeat to Calne Town Cobras. However, all the girls played brilliantly and should hold their heads up high after a great performance.

The girls worked tirelessly throughout the game, but it just wasn't meant to be, as Calne clinched the cup.

Despite the outcome, the girls should be immensely proud of themselves. They gave the game their all and were the better side for most of the match. Every single player was brilliant and there were lots of positives to take from the game.

Swindon a class above in one-sided final

Royal Wootton Bassett Town finished as Wiltshire Women's Cup runners-up for the fourth time after losing a one-sided final 7-0 to Swindon Town.

Both teams have enjoyed very successful seasons and are in the hunt for their respective league titles.

But the gulf in class between the tier four and six sides was evident in their County Cup final encounter.

Bassett gave a decent account of themselves. Yet that was not enough to prevent a heavy defeat as Swindon maintained their dominance of a competition that, barring a remarkable upset, they will likely continue to win year after year.

The Robins were 6-0 in front by half time.

Izzy Cook got them going, finding the top corner from the edge of the box, before the prolific Annie Colston scored a quickfire double.

Sky Bedwell soon made it 4-0 as she slotted home.

Taylor MacDonald then curled in a free kick for 5-0.

Bedwell would make it a half dozen for her side before the break, connecting with a Helena Diaz-Butcher cross from close range.

Within ten minutes of the restart, a MacDonald corner evaded everyone in the box, finding its way in for 7-0.

But that would prove to be the end of the scoring as Bassett held out for the remainder of the match.

A consolation goal proved beyond Bassett though as Swindon sealed a victory they would have expected.

Both teams now revert to league action - and their own title tilts.

For Swindon it will come down to a final day battle with FA Women's National League Division One South West leaders Moneyfields - a game they must win.

For Bassett, six more games remain, beginning with a crucial visit to fellow contenders Bitton on Wednesday - a match that the teams enter level on points having played the same number of games (with Bassett boasting the better goal difference).

This may have been an actual cup final - but the visit to Bitton (and next Sunday's home fixture against Mangotsfield United) have all the ingredients of the proverbial versions.

Midweek preview: Bassett face big Bitton test

There's no respite for Royal Wootton Bassett Town following on from Sunday's Wiltshire Women's Cup final. Instead James Lally's side go straight into a pivotal South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North visit to title rivals Bitton on Wednesday night (7pm kick off).

Both teams will be desperate for a win that would impact their opponents' title hopes and also close the gap to leaders Corsham Town with games in hand still to play.

The third meeting between the teams this season, it promises to be a closely fought contest.

Bassett got the better of Bitton in their league meeting in Wiltshire, winning 3-1, before Bitton triumphed 2-0 in a league cup encounter.

Neither side will be satisfied with a draw this time round with a decisive victory sought in this crucial rubber match.

-

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Women's First Team are proudly sponsored by Imagine Cruising.

Season fizzles out with Fairford defeat

Royal Wootton Bassett Town's Hellenic League Premier Division campaign fizzled out with a 2-0 derby defeat away against Fairford Town.

A pair of Sol Pryce goals earned Fairford a scrappy win, with the result meaning Bassett finish the season 16th after going winless in their last nine games, having taken just two points from an available 27.

To end the campaign with such a record is certainly disappointing - especially given the outstanding run that Jonny Aitkenhead's side went on in the ten games prior to that when they racked up 23 points that pretty much secured their Hellenic League Premier Division status.

Bassett have nonetheless been highly competitive in their final, barren series of games. Yet, as was the case against Fairford, they lacked the cunning necessary to see off more experienced, wily opposition.

Chances had been relatively few and far between in the opening period. But Fairford wound up in front going into the break as Sol Pryce rose to flick home Henry Birkett free kick with a glancing header.

Pryce then made it two around the hour mark. Receiving a pass from Charlie Holliday, he spun past Jack Coward before racing through on goal and slamming the ball beyond Harrison Ellis.

Bassett failed to summon much of a response to either goal, with the best chance they had being a curling effort from Rudi Hopkins that Ben Mitchell comfortably held.

Fairford then twice came close to extending their lead but fortunately for Bassett Holliday and Roan Young both blazed over when well placed.

It wasn't the way Bassett had hoped for to end the season. But it perhaps encapsulated a campaign in which the team have showed plenty of promise yet often struggled to get results.

There is plenty of space for this exciting young team to grow though. And with a full year now under the belts, next season is the time to properly kick on.

Girls’ Section Review: Under 14s continue push for title

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Under 14 Girls had their penultimate match of the North Wilts League Division One season against Durrington Seahawks on Saturday, and they looked to claim three more crucial points and remain top of the table.

The game was held on a tough pitch with a slight hill, but this didn't stop Bassett from playing some great football.

They were rewarded with an early goal five minutes in through Mia Hughes, who finished calmly at the end of a corner to put the Blues one up.

The girls didn't stop there and secured another goal not long after. Sienna Matthews poked a good ball through to Eryn Turnball who finished past the keeper to make the score 2-0.

Durrington were still looking dangerous and rattled the crossbar twice. However, they failed to convert a few clear chances whereas Bassett had their shooting boots on.

The Blues went on to score another two goals in quick succession.

The third came from Mia, who claimed her brace by heading home an Ava Hall corner.

Ava herself scored the fourth. Sienna delivered a great ball to the back post which Ava pounced on. Her initial shot was saved but she fired home the rebound to put Bassett in the lead by four goals.

At half time the Blues were 4-0 up and comfortably dominating possession.

The second half continued in a similar fashion, with the Blues looking calm and composed on the ball.

The girls managed to keep a clean sheet and were defensively solid.

Mia had a few more good chances to put the ball away, but unfortunately her shots were fired just wide.

However, she still had a big influence on the game, setting up Eryn for her second goal of the game. Mia slotted a lovely ball through to Eryn, who poked the ball into the bottom corner of the goal and sealed off a 5-0 win for Bassett.

Player of the match went to Eryn for a strong performance up front, and to Maya, who worked incredibly hard in defence.

Weekend preview: Excitement in store with Cup final and league finale

Royal Wootton Bassett Town are set for an exciting weekend as the Women's First Team face Swindon Town in the Wiltshire County Cup final on Sunday while the Men's First Team finish their Hellenic League Premier Division campaign with a derby visit to Fairford Town on Saturday.

Sunday's final sees Bassett aiming for their second County Cup title - and what would be a huge upset against higher level opponents.

A full preview of the game can be read here: https://rwbtfc.co.uk/news/00005937.

The game takes place at Melksham Town's Meads of Melksham Community Stadium, 2pm kick off.

It promises to be an entertaining final - so please do come along and give Bassett your support!

Prior to that Jonny Aitkenhead's side look to end the 2025-26 season on a high - and avenge a 4-0 home defeat against Fairford that they suffered back in August when they visit the Reds (3pm kick off).

Both teams have experienced contrasting fortunes in the final run in.

Bassett are winless in eight with a number of narrow defeats and two draws to their name in that spell.

Fairford have been on a strong run but saw their playoff push came to an agonising end on Easter Monday as a dramatic, late defeat to Corsham Town extinguished their hopes of a postseason place.

Both will give their all in this final derby of the season with bragging rights on the line ahead of the summer break.

Meanwhile, Mangotsfield United and Whitchurch's 4-4 draw meant they both lost ground.

Although enjoying the better of the chances, it took until shortly after the half hour mark for Bassett to take the lead. But they did so with an incisive, fluid move. Poppy Wannell's tackle saw the ball into the feet of Laura Jefferies. From the halfway line she clipped a pass into the path of path of Honor Fraser who fed Lauren Bulley to slot coolly into the bottom corner.

Bassett doubled their lead shortly after the restart. Tori Taylor's ball over the top led to panic in the Gloucester defence and after a wayward clearance, Wannell took full advantage, steering in from a tight angle.

Hannah Gulliver then sealed victory, stealing possession before charging down on goal and producing a composed one-on-one finish.

Next up for Bassett is the Wiltshire County Cup final against Swindon Town before a pair of decisive league fixtures away at Bitton and at home against Mangotsfield.

Bassett set for Women’s County Cup final this Sunday!

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Women's First Team aim to claim silverware - and spring a surprise - this Sunday (19 April) when they face Swindon Town in the Wiltshire County Women's Cup final.

The game takes place at Melksham Town's Meads of Melksham Community Stadium, 2pm kick off.

It promises to be an entertaining final - so please do come along and give Bassett your support!

In Bassett's fifth appearance in the County Cup final, they will be gunning for their second title as they seek both league and cup honours this season.

Yet they face the toughest test possible in the form of a Swindon side who ply their trade two levels higher - and who are also aiming for a league and cup double of their own having enjoyed a stellar season in the tier four FA Women's National League Division One South West.

Both sides have enjoyed straightforward paths to the final.

Bassett's journey began with a 11-1 home win against Wiltshire Senior League side Calne Town before an 11-0 quarter final victory against Highworth Town and 6-0 semi final triumph against Highworth Under 18s.

Swindon, meanwhile, notched up double figures in their second round tie away at Salisbury (14-0) and quarter final encounter with Corsham Town (19-0) before racking up a 9-0 semi final victory against Bemerton Heath Harlequins.

Bassett are therefore the third tier six side the Robins will face - with James Lally's team hoping to fare much better than Corsham and Bemerton with the trophy on the line.

Bassett have met Swindon in the final before, losing 7-1 in 2013-14. Bassett suffered a 2-0 final defeat against Swindon's Development team in 2017-18 before thrashing Swindon Spitfires 9-0 a season later to get their hands on the county prize for the first time.

Bassett's last final appearance was a 3-0 loss against Warminster Town in 2022-23.

Bassett have since exited the County Cup against Swindon in each of the last two season, losing 2-0 at the semi final stage in 2024-25 after a 6-0 quarter final defeat a year earlier.

Now Bassett will be aiming for an upset at the biggest stage of them all.

Senior Presentation Evening - Friday 15 May

Royal Wootton Bassett Town will be holding its Senior Presentation Evening on Friday 15 May for its Men's and Women's First Team sides and Men's Development team.

The event will take place in the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground clubhouse. Those attending are asked to arrive at 7pm for a prompt 7.30pm start.

The evening will see presentation of awards for the 2025-26 season for the club's three senior teams.

Food and drink will be provided while there will also be music and dancing following the presentation.

The Pegasus defence failed to deal with an Ollie Smith clearance, and Cleary took full advantage, taking one touch before lashing a low 20 yard drive into the bottom left corner.

However Pegasus were level within a minute as the visitors seized on a rare heavy touch from Harry Messenger, the ball being worked up to Harry Pitman who coolly swept home from just inside the area.

Rudi Hopkins forced a low save from Matthew Apperley before Jordan Williamson headed a corner narrowly over from close range as the teams went into the interval all square.

The first big chance of the second half fell to Pegasus Williamson whose curling effort was palmed over by Harrison Ellis.

But Bassett wound up going ahead when Finn Hopkins received a pass from brother Rudi and fired in on the turn.

And the hosts seemed destined to finally end their winless run.

They had opportunities to extend their lead, two of which fell to Freddie who Wyatt blazed over with just Apperley to beat before seeking the 'keeper parry a low effort around the post.

But it seemed as if Hopkins' goal was going to be the difference and enough to seal three points.

That was until stoppage time when Bassett failed to clear from an Apperley punt forward. The loose ball fell to Pitman who floated a pass into the area which defender Joe Davies - thrown forward late on - glanced into the net.

It was a sloppy, frustrating goal to concede - more so given the circumstances as Bassett once again let points slip out of their grasp.

Twins return to trouble Bassett

Highworth Town took the derby spoils as a pair of players who started the season with Royal Wootton Bassett Town came back to haunt Jonny Aitkenhead's side.

All four Highworth goals in their 4-2 win featured either Marcel or Otis Lewis as they came back to bite their former club.

Their departure from Bassett has been mutually beneficial, coinciding with the midseason run that all but guaranteed Bassett's Hellenic League Premier Division status while giving the twins a new lease of life. But on this afternoon there was only one side who benefited.

The first big chance of the match fell to Bassett as Highworth 'keeper James Walker produced an acrobatic save to tip Ben Cleary's powerful header from Harry Messenger's teasing cross over the bar.

Marcel Lewis then gave the visitors an early lead as he struck a low free kick from the right edge of the box into the bottom left corner.

And he would have soon had a second were it not for a fine saving tackle from Lewis Thorne.

Bassett then equalised as Rudi Hopkins' deft touch guided a Jack Coward ball out from the back into the path of Ed Taylor who took one touch before coolly slotting home.

An end of season contest with little riding on the outcome except for local pride, both sides sought to attack in an end to end contest.

For Bassett Coward guided headers from two Hopkins corners just off target, while Thorne saw an effort deflected over.

But Highworth would go into the break in front.

Two linebreaking passes saw the ball worked up to Marcel Lewis in the right corner and he crossed for Jordan Annear to guide in with a side foot volley.

Bassett were further behind shortly after the restart.

Cheldon Valere picked Messenger's' pocket and played in Marcel Lewis whose low drive from the edge of the area was parried. Annear was quickest to the rebound but saw his effort blocked only for Valere to mop things up.

To their credit Bassett's response was immediate to reduce the deficit back to one.

Marcel Lewis took a theatrical tumble just outside the area in the hope of winning a free kick. But the referee failed to fall for his dive. Messenger then swept a diagonal pass forward that Cleary expertly controlled before arrowing a fine effort into the bottom corner.

Bassett couldn't summon an equaliser though and the Worthians wrapped things up with ten minutes to go.

A counter attack saw substitute Alex Parsons feed Marcel Lewis on the left and his low cross was tapped in at the far post by brother Otis.

Highworth are now guaranteed to finish above Bassett with this result having extended their lead to six points while the Worthians also boast a far superior goal difference.

For Bassett it's now seven games without a win, with the aim in the final two games of the campaign to be to finish with at least one more victory.

Bassett victorious in Holland!

The Royal Wootton Bassett Town tradition of annual Holland tours meant that forty eight youth players went on the trip of a lifetime, kicking off the Easter holidays with four fast-paced days in the Netherlands.

The party consisted of the Under 12 and 13 Blue and U13 Girls squads. The teams would be battling it out with sister club FC 's-Gravenzande in a bid to win the Friendship Trophy, as well as Sportclub Monster.

Day 1

The teams gathered bleary-eyed at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground at 4:15 in the morning. Despite the early start, everyone was excited at the prospect of playing football abroad. The Under 13 Blues would be taking part in their second tour and looked to set an example to the two other teams who were experiencing their first ever trip.

The party swiftly boarded the coach and had departed by 4:45am. Systematic and structured organisation meant that the border crossing went smoothly, and the teams reached Dover to take the 10:30am ferry to Calais in good time.

The voyage across sea was successful, with thankfully nobody falling ill due to motion-sickness! The tour party then continued their journey by coach across France and Belgium, with a quick pit stop at the services.

Everyone reached the Stay Okay Hostel in Dordrecht by 6:00 pm in good spirits, although they were slightly worn out after ten hours spent travelling.

Rooms were allocated, bags were unpacked and beds were made before the tour party settled down for dinner together at 7:30pm.

The players were given a brief amount of time to unwind and explore their new surroundings. Eventually, everyone made for bed at 10:00pm in the hopes of getting a good night's sleep and resting for the busy few days that would follow.

Day 2

Another early start was in store for the tour party, with everyone awakening at 6:45am. Having lost two hours of sleep during the night, everyone would have much preferred a lie-in but instead headed out for a morning walk at 7:30am.

The teams and coaching staff enjoyed a quick breakfast back at the hostel prior to the opening matches off the tour at Sportclub Monster, which would be kicking off at 10:30am. Bags were hastily packed and everyone successfully boarded the coach on time.

The party arrived at Sportclub Monster as per schedule, where all three teams kicked off the tour in style with three unbeaten scorelines.

The Under 12 Blues were victorious in their first game playing eleven aside. They sealed off a 4-2 win with Josh Kirkup scoring two, and Eliott Bray and Marko Morse also finding the back of the net.

The Under 13 Girls drew 2-2 against an Under 15 side, with Christina Croft netting a brace. The girls were full of energy and got stuck in against a team that were older than them.

The Under 13 Blues claimed a 3-0 win with Cam Greaney finding the back of the net twice and Mikey Spencer scoring the third. It was a well-deserved victory for the boys as they had been clinical in front of goal.

Results vs Sportclub Monster:
Under 12 Blue: Won 4-2 (Player of the Match: Ryan Flanagan)
Under 13 Blue: Won 3-0 (Player of the Match: Ellis Paviour)
Under 13 Girls: Drew 2-2 (Player of the Match: Jess Riley)

Some time was spent at the Monster clubhouse, where the hosts were very welcoming. Then it was back to the hostel for some free time.

The teams at first gathered to award the Players of the Match awards and have a quick cake break, before heading off with their coaches to spend the afternoon doing an activity of their choosing.

The teams were brought back together again by their second evening meal at 6:00pm. This would in fact be their final dinner at the hostel, as the tour party would be out for all the next day.

A fun football themed quiz followed, in which all the players participated, before retiring to bed.

Day 3

This would be the tour party's final full day in the Netherlands, and by far the busiest too!

Everyone woke bright and early for another walk around the grounds and enjoyed a continental breakfast together. However, there wasn't much time to spare as the party would be departing at 9:30am for a tour of Eredivisie club Sparta Rotterdam's stadium.

Everyone received an interesting all access visit around the grounds of the team known as 'The Castle Lords'.

The sun was out so the party decided to make the most of the weather and headed to the seaside for a couple of hours. However, everyone agreed to stick to the shops and the pier rather than the freezing cold sea!

The final three games of the tour were held at FC 's-Gravenzande where three more major wins were claimed for Bassett to secure the Friendship Trophy.

The Under 12 Blues secured a massive 11-2 win with four goals from Josh Kirkup, a hat trick from Toby Hodson and braces from both Elliot Bray and Chase Bailey.

The Under 13 Blues championed with a 6-2 victory courtesy of goals from Cameron Greaney and Jack Anderton and braces from Mikey Spencer and Jack Saunders.

The Under 13 Girls claimed their first win of the tour, beating FC 's-Gravenzande 3-0. Christina Croft found the back of the net twice and Hollie Peachey sealed of the win with a last-minute strike.

Results vs FC 's-Gravenzande:
Under 12 Blue: Won 11-2 (Player of the Match: Josh Kirkup)
Under 13 Blue: Won 6-2 (Player of the Match: Mikey Spencer)
Under 13 Girls: Won 3-0 (Player of the Match: Aamira Sakiru)

After the games, the teams headed to the clubhouse for a meal and social evening. There, Bassett were presented with the Friendship Trophy as a result of their unbeaten streak throughout the evening. The players spent the evening celebrating their well-deserved win.

Day 4

The final day arrived quickly, and most of the players were reluctant to go home after their brilliant time on the trip. However, everyone was looking forward to seeing their families.

Bags were packed and loaded onto the coach and beds were stripped. The tour party headed down for a final breakfast, where the final prizes were awarded to wrap up the trip.

Prize winners

Under 12 Blue Player of the Tour: Elliot Bray
Under 13 Blue Player of the Tour: Will Mason
Under 13 Girls Player of the Tour: Christina Croft
Chris Kirkland Outstanding Contribution Award: The Under 13 Blue team

The Under 13 Blues were given this renowned award for setting such a great example to everyone on the trip. They set a high standard for behaviour and attitude and were leaders to the other teams.

By 9:30am, the tour party were on the coach and headed back to England. The journey once again went smoothly, with the party reaching the ferry port with hours to spare and everyone arriving back at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground ahead of schedule.

Thank you to everyone involved in the Holland Tour that helped to make it yet another brilliant trip!

Jonny Aitkenhead's side may have had an up and down campaign, but on home turf they have fared well with 7 wins, 4 draws and 7 defeats from their 18 league games so far.

And they will be looking to finish the campaign with a winning record at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground by claiming a positive result against a Pegasus side who sit nine points in front of Bassett.

The teams shared the points in an entertaining 2-2 draw in Hereford in January, while Bassett are unbeaten in their last five games at home against Pegasus, including four straight wins in which they have conceded just once.

Admission on Saturday is £8 for adults, £5 for concessions and free for RWBTFC youth members.

Please do come along and show your appreciation to Bassett's young side for one last time on home territory this season!

Also this weekend the Women's First Team return to action after the Easter break with an important South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North visit to Gloucester City Reserves (2pm kick off).

After a draw last time out, Bassett will be seeking to get back to winning ways against a team they beat 2-0 at home back in October.

Meanwhile on Saturday the Development team end their Wiltshire League Premier Division campaign the way they started it - against Melksham Town Reserves (2pm kick off).

Mark Simpkins' team are on the road and will be aiming to finish on a high.

Sunday also sees Bassett host the Wiltshire League Women's Cup final between FC Abbey Meads and Melksham Town (Gerard Buxton Sports Ground, 2pm kick off).

It is always an honour for the club and Sports Association to host cup finals, and we wish the best of luck to both teams involved.

But there were still chances for both sides. And twice before the interval the veteran Lewis Powell came close for the hosts only to be foiled by Callum Godfrey in the Bassett goal.

Powell would eventually get the better of Godfrey, reacting quickest to pounce on a spill from the 'keeper to bundle in his team's second equaliser with 76 minutes on the clock.

Within minutes Bassett almost restored their lead again only for Selway to pull off a brave save to deny leading scorer Ben Cleary.

Bassett therefore had to settle for a point. But it was a well earned one and puts Bassett on a positive footing heading into Monday's Easter derby.

Easter preview: Highworth derby highlight of busy weekend

Easter Monday promises a derby thriller when Royal Wootton Bassett Town host Highworth Town to cap off a busy weekend in the Hellenic League Premier Division (Gerard Buxton Sports Ground, 3pm kick off).

Both sides are playing for pride and position in the table as the season nears its end - and for Bassett victory is vital if they are to retain any hopes of finishing above their near neighbours.

Jonny Aitkenhead's side will also be aiming to finally get one over Highworth at the third time of asking this season.

When the teams met in the reverse league fixture back in September, Bassett had much the better chances during the game only to suffer a 1-0 defeat. A Wiltshire Premier Shield tie in October then saw Bassett surrender a 2-0 lead in stoppage time before losing on penalties.

Admission on Monday - Bassett's penultimate home game of the season - is £8 for adults, £5 for concessions and free for RWBTFC youth members.

Both teams will go into that match on less than 48 hours' rest, with Bassett visiting Mangotsfield United on Saturday (3pm kick off).

The Mangos are battling for a top half finish - with Bassett seeking to dent those hopes and avenge a 2-0 home loss in September.

Also on Saturday the Development team face an away derby against their Swindon Supermarine equivalents in their penultimate Wiltshire League Premier Division game of the season (3pm kick off).

Mark Simpkins' side will be aiming to bounce back after consecutive league defeats, though face a stern test against a Supermarine side who have their eyes set on finishing above Larkhall Athletic Development who they are battling for runners-up spot.

But the stalemate at Whitchurch has no doubt upped the pressure for Bassett's remaining seven fixtures - which include dates with Bitton and Mangotsfield United, both of who also find themselves in the mix at the top.

None of the teams vying for the title have a favourable run in.

Indeed all teams have at least two games to play against each other.

Corsham must visit Whitchurch and host Bitton. As well as Corsham, Whitchurch have to face Mangotsfield. Mangotsfield's last four games pit them against Whitchurch, Bassett and Bitton (twice). That also means Bitton have four to play against their fellow contenders.

April and May therefore promise more twists and turns in what has been an enthralling, closely fought season.

Bassett now have a break over Easter in which they will hope to dig out their scoring boots ahead of the crucial run in.

Glass shatter hopes with late winner

March certainly hasn't been kind to Royal Wootton Bassett Town.

Five games, four of which were against Hellenic League Premier Division promotion contenders, have seen Bassett suffer five defeats - despite Jonny Aitkenhead's side giving a strong account of themselves.

Four of those five losses have come in agonising fashion too. Bassett conceded two stoppage time goals in a 2-1 defeat at Slimbridge before a pair of late goals denied them a point at Cinderford Town.

Away at Corsham Town, Bassett bettered their opponents and did everything but score as they were beaten 1-0.

After last week's 2-0 reverse at home against Worcester Raiders, Bassett were hoping their trip to Roman Glass St George would yield the reward their effort and performances have arguably deserved.

But despite being on course for a point, Bassett wound up empty-handed again as Roman Glass conjured up an injury time winner to claim a 2-1 victory.

Roman Glass had initially been in front, going ahead midway through the first half when Chris Lines sent Callum Godfrey the wrong way from the penalty spot after Kian McNally had brought down Conor Hartley.

In a high tempo game, Bassett sought to be on the front foot as much as possible against quality opposition. That left them vulnerable on the break though as two counter attacks late in the first half almost saw Roman Glass double their lead, with Godfrey forced into a pair of composed saves.

A strong spell midway through the second half eventually produced an equaliser though. After Rudi Hopkins' low drive was tipped around the post, the resulting corner was headed into the bottom left of the net by Jack Coward.

And the visitors almost added a quickfire second as Ed Taylor flashed narrowly over.

The closing stages then saw both teams go close.

Bassett had a scare when David Ward headed a corner onto the crossbar with five minutes remaining.

Then at the other end Ben Cleary was played in behind the Roman Glass defence but stumbled as he prepared to shoot with just the keeper to beat.

It therefore seemed as though the game was destined for a draw.

But when Lines delivered a corner into the box in the 93rd minute, Harvey Tierney beat Godfrey to the punch and flicked a header home to cruelly deny Bassett a point that their efforts had deserved.

Weekend preview: Away double - including crucial Whitchurch visit

Royal Wootton Bassett Town's Men's and Women's First Team sides both hit the road this weekend for a pair of tough away tests.

And for the Women's First Team Sunday's trip to Whitchurch is a clash against fellow South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North title challengers (2pm kick off).

Holding a two point lead over their hosts, Bassett will be looking to extend that advantage with a game in hand still to play over their opponents.

James Lally's side were 5-0 winners against Whitchurch when the teams met in Wiltshire in November.

But visiting Whitchurch will be a different prospect with Sunday's hosts having won five and lost just one of their six home league fixtures so far this season.

Prior to that on Saturday the Men's First Team travel to Hellenic League Premier Division title hopefuls Roman Glass St George as their tough run of March fixtures comes to an end (3pm kick off).

Back in November Roman Glass were 4-2 winners in a game in which Bassett were competitive.

Jonny Aitkenhead's side have performed well in losses against three other promotion contenders this month but have come away empty handed from those games. The Bassett boss will therefore be hoping his side can finish March with something to show for their efforts.

While both those games are away there is still action at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground with a pair of County Cup finals.

On Saturday Melksham Town Development face Tisbury United in the Wiltshire Junior Cup final (2pm kick off). Then on Sunday Tidworth Town and Pinehurst square off in the Sunday Cup final (10.30am).

Best of luck to all four teams - it is an honour to host the finals along with Royal Wootton Bassett Sports Association, and we look forward to a pair of entertaining games.

Huge thanks to all who have attended the sessions as they continue to be a big success!

Girls’ Section Review: Under 14s win again

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Under 14 Girls faced bottom side Trowbridge Wanderers Lionesses at home on Saturday in their quest to finish at the top of the North Wilts League Division One table.

The girls didn't make a great start as they found themselves one down in the first 15 seconds after a couple of mistakes. They soon found themselves lucky not to be two behind as Trowbridge steered a shot just wide of the target.

Things started looking up when Sienna Matthews stepped up with a brilliant strike to make the score 1-1.

Not long after, she delivered for her team yet again, her shot deflecting off the opposition and into the net, putting Bassett ahead.

The Blues gained momentum from this and went on to score another two goals - one from Sienna, who completed her first half hat trick, and Alisa Allan.

Alisa was unlucky not to score a second when her strike rattled the crossbar.

The Blues were 4-1 up at half time but could have been about 10 ahead if they had netted some early chances, and the girls knew they could do better.

Bassett were looking stronger in the second half and put out a much better performance, securing another three goals from Ava Hall, Poppy Notton-Barrett and Sienna and sealing off a 7-1 victory.

The Blues clinched another crucial 3 points with not many games of the season left to go.
Player of the match was awarded to Maya by both the parents and coaches for an excellent performance.

The Under 13s travelled to Bath City for their final game of the season in the hope of claiming three points and a spot in the top three in the Division One table.

Things weren't looking positive from the start when defender Tia Campbell was withdrawn from the match with a sprained ankle. We are wishing her a speedy recovery.

Bath came out strong in the first half, whereas Bassett didn't make the best start and conceded to Bath's first attack in just five minutes.

Things went downhill from here on and the Blues found themselves conceding another two goals in quick succession, despite some great saves from goalkeeper Ella Oates.

The girls lost confidence and Bath capitalised on this, scoring a flurry of easy goals.

Somehow, a deflated Bassett found themselves six down at half time.

Although there seemed no hope of winning the game now, the team treated the second half like a new match and came out fighting.

Their hard work and energy paid off when they got a well-deserved goal. Christina Croft drove down the right wing, dribbled around the keeper and slotted the ball home.

The away side were dominating and looking more themselves.

It seemed harsh for Bath to score two late goals to seal off their win, particularly as Bassett had been the better side in the second half.

Player of the match went to Ella for a fantastic performance in goal and up front.

The Under 13s have their Holland tour to look forward to next week. Good luck, girls!

Five star Bassett up to second

Five second half goals sealed an emphatic victory away against AFC Brislington as Royal Wootton Bassett Town climbed up to second in the South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North.

James Lally's side patience against the division's basement side eventually paid off after a stubborn Brislington display in a first half in which Bassett were largely on top.

And once Honor Fraser bent a free kick from 25 yards out into the top corner there was only going to be one winner.

Poppy Wannell quickly made it 2-0, lashing home a powerful 20 yard drive after strong pressing from Emma Sykes forced a turnover in possession high up the pitch.

Kat Bach then made it 3-0. Briony Hurd clipped a ball forward that Lauren Bulley brought down. Bach then took control before driving into the box and steering in from an angle.

Bulley's quickfire late brace completed the scoring. Her first was a simple tap in after Elle Scott's low drive came back out off the post.

She had her second within thirty seconds of the restart as Scott won the ball back before Wannell teed up Bulley who danced in behind and slotted home.

An expected win, it was nonetheless crucial Bassett took the opportunity to enhance their goal difference - and that they did.

The result sees them climb above Whitchurch - their opponents in another big away game next week. That represents a chance to gain some breathing room over rivals for the title. Indeed, should Bassett win they will pull five points ahead of Whitchurch with a game in hand still to play.

Raiders at the double to down Bassett

A strong first half performance from Worcester Raiders saw the Hellenic League Premier Division promotion chasers claim a 2-0 victory against Royal Wootton Bassett Town and seal a third win this season against Jonny Aitkenhead's side.

Bailey Fuller's well taken brace of goals proved the difference between the sides as Raiders kept in touch with fellow title contenders Slimbridge, Roman Glass St George and Droitwich Spa in what is proving to be an exciting four horse race for the title.

Knowing what was at stake, Raiders dominated in the opening period, staking out a two goal advantage before half time that they would maintain until the final whistle despite a spirited second half showing from the hosts.

The visitors had been on top in the game's early stages with Manu Olaloko bringing out a low save from Callum Godfrey.

They eventually took the lead midway through the half when Bassett failed to clear from a ball that was hooked forward and Fuller cut in from the right before curling a delicious effort into the net off the left post.

Five minutes later Raiders doubled their lead. A corner fell to Fuller on the edge of the box and he took one touch before arrowing a low drive into the bottom corner.

In fairness it was a masterclass in finishing from the Raiders man with both goals being of a high quality.

Bassett had failed to threaten up until that point - but they almost snatched a goal back when Rudi Hopkins' low drive forced a smart parry from an initially unsighted Charlie Emery. The rebound dropped perfectly for Ben Cleary but he could only stab over from close range.

Fuller almost completed his hat trick shortly after the restart, forcing a punch from Godfrey with a tight angled effort after skilfully manoeuvring past Kian McNally.

But Bassett soon grew into the second half and matched their opponents the rest of the way.

They had good chances to get back into the game too. With Emery stranded, Cleary failed to connect properly with an Ed Taylor cross and headed off target. Gabe Reivers then forced a stop from Emery after Cleary set the ball back to him from Ollie Smith's hanging cross. Late on Emery was equal to a powerful 25 yard drive from Harry Messenger.

It was a decent second half effort from Bassett. But Raiders had done enough first half damage and held on to claim a potentially vital three points in the battle at the top.

Pete Yeardley honoured with Civic Award

Huge congratulations to Royal Wootton Bassett Town FC Vice Chairman Pete Yeardley who has been honoured with a prestigious Civic Award by Royal Wootton Bassett Town Council!

The awards honour outstanding individuals who have dedicated their time to support and enhance the town's community.

And through all he has contributed to sporting life in the town, Pete is a fitting recipient.

Pete has volunteered for and served both the Sports Association and Football Club for 30+ years. For the football club, he initially joined as Reserve team manager before a spell as Men's First Team manager, roles that he combined with volunteering as a youth football coach as part of the Soccer in the Community scheme organised by the much loved and much missed Chris Kirkland.

Since then Pete has served on the club's committee, fulfilling numerous roles and spurring the club's growth.

As Head of Youth Section he was instrumental in developing the youth setup to what it is today (with more than 20 teams), and continues to serve as Vice Chairman.

Further to this he performs a vast array of background work such as opening and cleaning changing rooms, washing kit, making teas, coffee and food for visiting teams, etc.

Pete is also fundamental to the fantastic youth football tours and exchanges to the Netherlands that take place on an annual basis. These were first organised by Chris Kirkland (famous for his 'cake breaks' on the coach trip to and from the Netherlands), with Pete assisting on numerous trips when organised through the school. Through Chris and Pete these are now integrated into the football club, with the relationships with partner clubs such as FC 's-Gravenzande a testament to Pete's dedication and personality.

Alongside the work for the football club, Pete has continued to give an extraordinary amount of time to the Sports Association, notably Chairing the Association through the very difficult final years at our old site and the transition to the new facility, always maintaining eyes on the mission of the Association to provide sustainable and affordable sporting facilities to our community. His tireless work for the Association continues, serving as 'Facilities Manager' but actually doing so much more.

Quite frankly, without Pete neither the Football Club nor the Sports Association would be able to offer our community all the sports and social participation opportunities they enjoy today.

Thank you Pete for everything you have - and continue to do - for the Football Club and Sports Association. And congratulations on a thoroughly deserved Civic Award - an honour that goes to the best of Bassett.

Bassett made a nervy start and Tyrone Mings capitalised on this, piling the pressure on. Despite this, the Blues still created attacks, although unfortunately the two shots they had went wide.

Tyrone Mings were looking strong, and Basett relied on a goal line clearance from Elsie Gorringe to prevent them going behind.

However, these defensive efforts weren't enough. Not long into the half, the opposition pounced on a rushed goal kick and slotted the ball away. 1-0 to Tyrone Mings.

The Blues began to struggle a little under the pressure but still put up a solid defensive performance, keeping the opposition at bay until half time.

A reshuffle in the squad meant a fresh start for Bassett in the second half, and the girls began to link up well, with Alisa Allan and Ava Hall causing problems on the wings.

Unfortunately, defender Elise Dart was forced off due to injury, but the girls covered for each other well.

Bassett began some positive combinations and were soon rewarded with an equalising goal. The ball was drilled into the box for Ava to smash home back post. 1-1!

This gave the Blues a lift but there was only seven minutes left to play.

However, the tide had turned and Bassett had most of the possession, continuing to challenge the Tyrone Mings back line.

Then came a breakthrough!

Mia Hughes drove down the pitch and, with some tricky feet, found herself through on goal. Her shot was initially saved but then bobbled into the net to give Bassett the lead in the nick of time.

The girls held strong for the final few minutes to claim a 2-1 win and a spot in the final at Foundation Park!

Player of the match went to Sienna Matthews, who had a great game attacking and defending. It was also awarded to Izzy Ellis for her brilliant calm defending and commanding performance at the back.

While the Under 14s marched onto the final, the Under suffered a devastating loss to FC Abbey Meads Blue in anothernail-bitingly close cup semi-final.

The girls made a strong start for the first ten minutes, piling the pressure on the opposition's defence.

Their intensity paid off when captain Christina Croft pounced on a loose ball and drove towards goal, before placing the ball calmly in the far bottom corner. Things were looking up for Bassett!

However, Abbey Meads were also pushing for a goal of their own. Their own breakthrough came after a tight scrappy battle in front of goal, before the ball was finally smashed home to make it 1-1.

The Blues lost their momentum after this, and Abbey Meads began to dominate. However, the girls battled hard and kept the score at 1-1 till half time.

Bassett came out fighting in the second half, and were looking a lot more composed and confident on the ball.

The girls were all working extremely hard, but unfortunately as the half wore on, they began to tire.

The Blues found themselves getting pushed back deeper and deeper, and lost control of the game.

Although they weren't creating any attacks, Bassett continued to battle furiously in defence. Players such as Tia Campbell, Olivia Cooper and Aamira Sakiru were putting everything on the line to maintain the scoreline.

However, their efforts just weren't enough.

Abbey Meads were pushing for a winner and their goal came with just 10 minutes left to play.

Keeper Ella made two saves in quick succession to prevent the opposition a goal, but the rebound was poked into the corner of the net. 2-1 to Abbey Meads.

Bassett were deflated by this turn of events and weren't looking like equalising.

The final whistle eventually blew, and the girls' dreams of reaching a cup final were crushed.

They had given the game their all but were ultimately beaten by the better side of the day.

Player of the match went to Jess Riley, who was full of energy and got stuck in all over the field.

The Under 13 have their last league game against Bath City next week. Let's end the season on a high, girls!

Weekend preview: Bassett host promotion chasing Raiders

Another week, another test against Hellenic League Premier Division title hopefuls.

On Saturday Royal Wootton Bassett Town's tough run of March fixtures continues as they take on Worcester Raiders.

Unlike for their visits to Slimbridge and Corsham Town, Bassett at least have home advantage when they face Raiders with the game taking place at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground (3pm kick off).

Jonny Aitkenhead's side fell to a heavy 7-2 defeat in the reverse fixture back in October before losing 3-0 at home in a December Challenge Cup contest.

Bassett will therefore be hoping for a positive outcome at the third time of asking against a Raiders side who - like their fellow contenders at the top - have suffered a brief wobble recently.

Admission on Saturday is £8 for adults, £5 for concessions and free for RWBTFC youth members.

Then on Sunday Bassett visit basement side AFC Brislington in the South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North (2pm kick off).

James Lally's team will be seeking to enhance their promotion hopes and complete a season double over opponents they beat 8-0 at home in January.

Also this weekend the Development team enter the final three games of their Wiltshire League Premier Division season with a trip to Trowbridge Town on Saturday (3pm kick off).

Mark Simpkins' side will be aiming to make it six points from six against the Bees this season after winning 3-0 at home in September.
