Hurd took home both her team's Players' Player and Supporters' Player of the Year prizes.

Elsewhere there were five different award winners for the Men's First Team and three for the Development team.

Full details are below.

Women's First Team

The Women's First Team wrap up their season on Sunday when they hope to record the win that will secure the South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North title.

Key to Bassett's success has been their watertight defence that has recorded a remarkable 17 clean sheets.

And it is therefore perhaps little surprise that a key member of James Lally's side's defence, Briony Hurd, picked up a Player of the Year double. Hurd was absent most of last season while travelling, but has been sensational following her return with consistent, strong displays. One of the first names on the teamsheet, Hurd has played in all but two games, coming off the bench just once, while also scoring four goals.

Tori Taylor - one of Lally's key summer signings - then took the Manager's Player of the Year prize. Featuring in midfield and attack, Taylor's experience has proven decisive for Bassett this season, helping her team pull through in multiple closely fought games. Her quality has been on display too. And in 24 appearances so far, Taylor has contributed eight goals - including the stunning winner in a crucial away victory at Bitton.

Players' Player of the Year: Briony Hurd
Manager's Player of the Year: Tori Taylor
Supporters' Player of the Year: Briony Hurd

Men's First Team

While ultimately finishing in 16th place in the Hellenic League Premier Division, there were plenty of positives to take from the Men's First Team campaign which saw Bassett's talented young side grow across the course of a testing season.

And the quality and promise of the squad Jonny Aitkenhead built was reflected in the team's prize winners.

Second top scorer Rudi Hopkins took the Manager's Player of the Year prize. The dynamic, confident forward bagged eleven goals in 41 appearances, while also providing numerous assists.

The versatile Harry Messenger, meanwhile, picked up the Players' Player of the Year award. A classy operator who shows maturity beyond his years and is the type of player to build a team around, Messenger stood out in his 25 appearances as he split time between centre half and central midfield.

There was then a three-way tie for the Supporters' Player of the Year prize. Top scorer Ben Cleary, young full back - and youth section product - Ollie Smith and midfield playmaker Ed Taylor finished tied in the voting.

A hard working player with an eye for goal, Cleary led the line for Bassett throughout the campaign, netting 20 times in his team-leading 46 games, while also captaining the side for most of the campaign.

Smith was excellent throughout the season, impressing in his defensive duties as well as when going forward and finished with three goals in 39 games. Taylor was a worthy winner too as the diminutive midfielder stood out with his passing range and how easy he made the game look.

Another player who featured in the vast majority of games, Taylor scored three goals in 42 matches.

Players' Player of the Year: Harry Messenger
Manager's Player of the Year: Rudi Hopkins
Supporters' Player of the Year: Ben Cleary, Ollie Smith and Ed Taylor

Men's Development Team

The Development team enjoyed a solid Wiltshire League Premier Division campaign with Mark Simpkins' finishing in eighth - inside the top half - with elevens wins, eleven draws and ten defeats to their name.

That was an impressive outcome in a strong division, especially given the turnover in players throughout the season.

Three of the team's leading appearance makers took home their awards.

Midfielder Matt Capel, who scored five goals in 33 games, earned Players' Player of the Year. The versatile Max Spackman took the Manager's Player prize after scoring three times in 33 appearances. Meanwhile, talented forward Toby Parker - who netted four goals in 32 games, while also featuring three times for the Men's First Team - was named Supporters' and Young Player of the Year.

Players' Player of the Year: Matt Capel
Manager's Player of the Year: Max Spackman
Supporters' Player of the Year: Toby Parker
Young Player of the Year: Toby Parker

Provisional Hellenic League Premier Division constitution announced

The provisional constitution for the 2026-27 Hellenic League Premier Division season has been published by the Football Association, with the allocations for all leagues at steps one through six of the National League System being released.

There are set to be three changes to the division, with Bassett aiming to improve on their 16th place finish in 2025-26 as manager Jonny Aitkenhead enters his second season in charge.

Bassett are set for a further two derbies following the promotion of Devizes Town as Western League Division One champions and Malmesbury Victoria as Hellenic League Division One playoff winners.

One of Wiltshire's most decorated non league sides, Devizes are finally back at step five for the first time since 2008-09. And they will be league rivals of Bassett for the first time since 1966-67 when the teams were together in the Wiltshire League Premier Division.

Devizes were in the same division as Bassett's Development team in 2022-23 when Devizes finished as runners-up in the Wiltshire Senior League Premier Division having fallen to step seven for a single season. Now though they are at a level befitting of their stature and support and we look forward to what hopefully will be two well contested Wiltshire derbies.

Malmesbury, meanwhile, return to step five after a season away, having triumphed in the playoffs for the second time in three years. Set to play at step five for the third time in their history, Malmesbury will be aiming to avoid the same fate they have previously suffered when in the Hellenic Premier, having failed to survive beyond a single season the two previous occasions they have been in the division.

There will be then new opponents for Bassett in the form of Stourport Swifts.

The Worcestershire-based Swifts have been transferred from the Midland League Premier Division where they have spent the past twelve seasons. The Swifts, who played in the Southern League from 2001-02 to 2011-12, finished 14th in 2025-26.

Departing the Hellenic Premier are champions Slimbridge and playoff winners Worcester Raiders, both of who earned promotion to step four.

Heading in the opposite direction are Lydney Town after an eleven season spell at step five. Cribbs earned a reprieve despite finishing 19th as a result of resignations elsewhere.

The full provisional constitution for the 2026-27 Hellenic League Premier Division, featuring 20 sides, is as follows:

Cinderford Town
Cirencester Town
Corsham Town
Cribbs
Devizes Town
Droitwich Spa
Fairford Town
Hallen
Hereford Pegasus
Highworth Town
Longlevens
Malmesbury Victoria
Mangotsfield United
Pershore Town
Roman Glass St. George
Royal Wootton Bassett Town
Stourport Swifts
Thornbury Town
Tuffley Rovers
Westfields
The constitution is, at present, provisional and subject to change.

Weekend preview: Bassett visit Paulton with title on the line

It all comes down to this. 90 minutes stand between Royal Wootton Bassett Town and the South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North title.

If Bassett win away at Paulton Rovers on Sunday (2pm kick off), they will be champions.

Any other outcome and it will all come down to how results go elsewhere involving Bitton and Corsham Town.

Bassett's destiny is in their own hands though - and they will be favourites to beat a Paulton side who have won just once in the league this season.

Yet Sunday's hosts will be no pushovers. Bassett triumphed 2-0 when they met in Wiltshire earlier this season, while Paulton have been competitive in most of their games. The teams also drew 1-1 when they met in Paulton last year.

One last big performance is therefore needed from Bassett.

The game is taking place at Writhlington School, Radstock (BA3 3NQ).

Also on Sunday morning the Under 14 Girls play their North Wilts League Cup final against Marlborough Youth Raiders (Foundation Park, 9.30am kick off).

After finishing runners-up in Division One, the Under 14 Girls are aiming for the first North Wilts League Cup success for the club's Girls' section.

They face a Marlborough team who Bassett have recorded three wins against in high-scoring league games, including a pair of 4-3 victories and an 8-5 triumph.

Best of luck to both teams - and please do come along and show your support if you can!

Despite having just one league win to their name, Paulton have proven a competitive outfit across almost all their league outings.

However Bassett's destiny is now - with one game left - in their own hands with that last remaining hurdle being a contest they will be clear favourites to win.

This has to be Bassett's moment.

As with many of their now sixteen league wins so far this campaign, Bassett's victory against Bath was hard fought and decided by narrow margins.

That has been Bassett's trademark. They boast the joint-fourth most potent attack in the division. Yet their defensive record is far and away the best (even if they conceded a sixth goal in their past three outings).

Bassett led early when Bath's Katie Davis turned the ball into the net at the far post following a Tori Taylor corner.

But Bath levelled when a fine Beth Edwards pass fed right winger Emma Vilday in behind the Bassett defence and she clipped a well taken first time effort beyond Millie Powell.

The hosts restored their lead when Mia Mugford shed her marker and steered home from another Taylor corner at the left post.

And Bassett seemingly assumed control of the match around the hour mark when a well worked move ended with Megan Young teeing up Hannah Gulliver for a tap in.

But ten minutes later Bath pulled one back as Darcy Cox was unfortunate to head a corner into her own net.

It was then almost level late on when Adella Clarke shot on the turn from the right edge of the box but saw her effort crash off the bar.

Bassett held out though to record another vital victory in what has been an enthralling title race.

One game now to go.

Under 18 Blues denied the double

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Under 18 Blue were denied the double as Ramsbury Youth overturned a 2-0 deficit before prevailing on penalties in the North Wilts League Cup final.

Bassett were the runaway Division One champions and aiming to become the first Under 18 team in club history to claim the North Wilts League double.

And they looked on course to do just that thanks to an early Jack Moss goal and a second half strike from Rauf Acheampong.

The Blues had numerous chances to extend their lead further too - which they would end up rueing.

Ramsbury had run Bassett close in a pair of league defeats. And they summoned a late comeback with cup silverware on the line, forcing penalties with goals from Olly McDonald-Smith and Finlay Mowe.

A dramatic shootout ensued - with Ramsbury prevailing in sudden death.

Weekend preview: Huge home finale as title race nears conclusion

Royal Wootton Bassett Town play their penultimate game of the South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North season on Sunday - and their final fixture at home.

The stakes couldn't be any higher as Bassett entertain Bath City (Gerard Buxton Sports Ground, 2pm kick off).

Three points are more or less a must as Bassett seek to maintain top spot and take the title in what has been a thrilling, topsy-turvy race.

With fellow contenders Bitton and Corsham Town facing each other, one (or both) of those sides will see their chances take a dent. And given their superior goal difference, a Bassett win will all but guarantee that James Lally's team enter their final match at Paulton Rovers in control of their own destiny.

First though, Bassett have to get through a stern test against a Bath side who are always competitive. Indeed, Bassett edged a 1-0 win against the Romans in their earlier meeting this season, maintaining a streak that has see no game between the teams being decided by more than two goals.

Sunday's game is critical - so please do come along and show your support.

Admission is £4 for adults, £2 for concessions and free for RWBTFC youth members.

Prior to that Saturday sees the Under 18 Blues aim for North Wilts League Cup glory as they face Ramsbury in the final at the Corinium Stadium, Cirencester (9.30am kick off).

Do come along and show your support as the Under 18s seek to complete the double!

Just.

Thursday's shock defeat against Stockwood Wanderers turned this game into one Bassett had to win to avoid having to rely on results elsewhere in their final two games to overtake Corsham Town.

And it looked as though Bassett's afternoon was destined to end in what would have been a disappointing, dispiriting draw too.

Bassett didn't make things easy for themselves after Poppy Wannell was dismissed in the first half. The young forward let her emotions in the heat of the battle get the better of her, with the referee initially sending her to the sin bin for her language before upgrading that to a red card after Wannell did not back down.

Bassett then saw what seemed to be a perfectly legitimate goal from Hannah Gulliver ruled out for offside when she bundled in the rebound after a Mia Mugford shot was saved.

To compound matters, Cirencester quickly went up the other end and took the lead through Annie Martin.

Bassett now had to chase the game short-handed.

The hosts eventually levelled when player of the match Briony Hurd found the net following an Elle Scott free kick delivery.

Then, in the final minute, a Scott corner fell to Young, who - much to the delight (and relief) of her team - put the ball away.

It was all too much for Cirencester too as defender Sarah Rayworth decided to deliver an elbow to the ribs of Bassett's Lauren Bulley.

That massively unspotting act earned her a deserved straight red card - with the referee also calling time.

Bassett had snared the victory they needed.

Bassett set for North Wilts League Cup final double

The next two weekends see Royal Wootton Bassett Town's Under 18 Blue and Under 14 Girls sides aim for North Wilts League Cup glory as both feature in their respective age group finals.

On Saturday 9 May the Under 18 Blues face Ramsbury at the Corinium Stadium (9.30am kick off).

Then on Sunday 17 May the Under 14 Girls take on Marlborough Youth Raiders at Foundation Park (9.30am kick off).

Please do come along and show your support to both teams!

It's the first time since the 2018-19 season that Bassett have had sides reach the North Wilts League Cup final - and both teams will
be aiming to make history.

The Under 18 Blues have a chance to be the first Bassett side to complete a North Wilts League and Cup double at their age group.

After being awarded their second round tie against Wroughton Youth, Bassett saw off Division One rivals AFC Park 3-1 in the quarter finals before a convincing 5-1 victory against Stratton Youth in the last four.

The Blues completed a season double over final opponents Ramsbury in the league, winning 5-4 away and 3-1 at home.

Meanwhile, after finishing runners-up in Division One, the Under 14 Girls are aiming for the first North Wilts League Cup success for the club's Girls' section.

Their route to the final involved a 4-1 quarter final win against Bradford Town Ravens before beating Division One Champions Tyrone Mings Hurricanes 2-1 in the semi final.

They now face a Marlborough team who Bassett have recorded three wins against in high-scoring league games, including a pair of 4-3 victories and an 8-5 triumph.

An exciting final with plenty of goals is therefore on the cards.

Best of luck to both teams - and come on Bassett!

Bassett suffer shock Stockwood setback

Royal Wootton Bassett Town suffered a setback in the race for the South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North title as they fell to a shock 3-2 defeat away against Stockwood Wanderers.

Facing a Stockwood side fighting to escape the bottom three, Bassett's midweek visit to Bristol was always going to be a challenging one.

But having kept seven consecutive league clean sheets, James Lally's team entered the game as clear favourites.

Yet they ultimately fell victim to an upset defeat - and missed out on the opportunity to take over top spot from leaders Corsham Town.

Stockwood took the lead from the penalty spot courtesy of Izzy Marsh before Hannah Gulliver equalised with a well taken goal.

However, Maddie Stadde headed a second to restore Stockwood's lead - an advantage her team took into the break after 'keeper Ava Vowles saved from a Lauren Bulley penalty.

Bassett's evening went from bad to worse after the restart when Stockwood captain Toni Blenkinsopp capitalised on a defensive error to make it 3-1.

Alice Bowden did pull one back for Bassett, slotting home after Elle Scott collected a Gulliver corner and squared to the experienced defender.

But, despite a late rally and throwing everything they could at Stockwood, an equaliser was not forthcoming, with Bassett enduring the added frustration of seeing a goal disallowed.

Despite the result, Bassett can still go top - but to do so they now must beat local rivals Cirencester Town at home on Sunday. Fail to win that game, and Bassett will be playing catchup with two games to go.

That added pressure is something that Bassett could have done without.

All three title challengers - Bassett, Corsham and Bitton - can now achieve a maximum of 54 points if they win all their remaining games, with Bassett currently holding the tiebreaker on goal difference should that come into play.

With Bitton and Corsham due to play each other next weekend, one or both are guaranteed to not reach that number.

Here's hoping Bassett stay the course to get there.

Weekend preview: Two games in four days - including derby date

Royal Wootton Bassett Town face two South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North fixtures in the space of four days - including a derby date against Cirencester Town on Sunday.

James Lally's side will be looking for at least three points that will take them to the top of the table - with a pair of wins potentially enough to put them on the brink of the title.

Neither game will be easy though.

Bassett and Cirencester drew 1-1 when they met at the Corinium Stadium in January, with the teams also splitting the points in their encounter at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground last season.

Sunday's fixture takes place at 2pm. Entry is via donation with proceeds raised going to Prospect Hospice in memory of the mother of Cirencester player Phoebe McGouran - a good friend of a number of the Bassett squad.

Prior to that on Thursday Bassett travel to face Stockwood Wanderers (7pm kick off).

Bassett were comfortable 9-0 winners against Stockwood in October. However, Thursday's hosts have turned things around in recent weeks as they fight to extricate themselves from the bottom three. And three of their four league wins this season have come in their last seven games.

The Over 35s then take the field at 3pm.

Food and drinks will follow in the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground clubhouse.

We look forward to seeing you - and many others - at the event.

-

As a club, we are always proud to help build on the close ties between Royal Wootton Bassett and the armed forces, in particular the Royal Air Force.

Given the proximity to Lyneham, numerous individuals linked with the RAF - be they serving in the air force or their family members - have played, coached or volunteered for Bassett over the years.

And, in keeping with the town's motto - "We honour those who serve" - we hope hosting this event is a fitting way of showing our appreciation for everything the RAF have done for our town and country.

The Super Saturday event is the most important date in the calendar for Bassett's Veterans section, with strong relations having been built with the RAF FA over the course of nine years since the first edition in 2018.

And all events have been extremely well attended and supported.

It is therefore hoped that it will be the same this year.

And - most importantly- one step closer to taking over top spot in the South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North.

Royal Wootton Bassett Town's 2-0 triumph against Mangotsfield United saw them pull within three points of leaders Corsham Town with two games in hand still to play.

Top spot could therefore belong to Bassett by this time next weekend if James Lally's side can claim victory against either Stockwood Wanderers or Cirencester Town - their opponents on Thursday and next Sunday.

Victory in both games would see Bassett, barring any huge shifts in goal difference, require just one win from their final two fixtures to seal the title.

While claiming their latest victory and another clean sheet, Bassett were not quite at their best against Mangotsfield.

Indeed they were rather lucky to have not fallen behind in an opening period that saw the visitors squander a series of gilt-edged chances.

Mangotsfield should really have been ahead when Adele Elliott shrugged off the attentions of Alice Bowden to get on the end of a long throw in behind the defence but she could only find the side netting.

After Bassett gave the ball away in their own half, Elliott teed up an unmarked Brooke Moore who skied over the bar.

Their best opportunity to go ahead then fell to Moore after Mangotsfield won a penalty but she dragged her spot pick onto the left post.

Bassett had their moments too with Poppy Wannell dragging wide and Honor Fraser firing over when through one-on-one.

But they wound up going ahead shortly before the half time. Lauren Bulley's finish wasn't the prettiest but it was a vital goal as she steered in from a Fraser cut back after good work to win back the ball from Tori Taylor and Elle Scott's pass into the right channel.

Bassett then doubled their lead shortly after the restart as captain Laura Jefferies swung in a corner that evaded everyone and found its way in at the far post.

The second goal seemed to settle Bassett.

And Wannell was inches away from making it three after picking off a pass before narrowly dragging wide of the post.

A third goal wasn't needed though as Mangotsfield created little in the second period - and Bassett sealed another crucial three points in a thrilling title race.

Youth and Girls Section teams seeking players for next season

Read here for details of Royal Wootton Bassett Town youth and girls section teams who are currently seeking additional players and/or coaches.

Goalkeeper sought for next season's Under 12 Girls team

Royal Wootton Bassett Town are seeking a goalkeeper for next season's Under 12 Girls team.

He injured a 'hammy' - and perhaps also some pride - in the process and was forced to come off.

Bassett did get themselves back on level terms with a well taken headed goal from Gavin Cook.

However, it would be the RAF who would celebrate the win a late goal giving them a 3-2 win.

Taylor thunderbolt delivers vital victory

A fine goal from Tori Taylor early in the second half earned Royal Wootton Bassett Town a potentially vital 1-0 victory against South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North title rivals Bitton.

The experienced Taylor produced a thunderbolt of a goal - her eighth of the season - from thirty yards out.

And that proved to be the only goal of a tight, tense battle as Bassett held out for their twelfth clean sheet in 17 league games - and sixth in a row.

This was therefore a night where the title race swung partly in Bassett's favour.

However there is still a long way to go.

Four wins from their remaining five games should be enough for Bassett to seal the title (barring a remarkable swing in goal difference).

But those five fixtures - beginning with the visit of Mangotsfield United on Sunday - will all be tough.

Bassett are also due to host Cirencester Town and Bath City - opponents they found the going tough against away from home, with a midweek visit to an improving Stockwood Wanderers and final day trip to Paulton Rovers also on the cards.

At least for now Bitton are playing catch up.

Free Saturday Skills Sessions - upcoming dates

Please see below details of dates that Royal Wootton Bassett Town's award-winning Free Saturday Skills and Wildcats' Girls Football sessions will NOT be taking place in the coming weeks ahead of the school summer holidays.

Unless otherwise indicated, sessions will be taking place.

Saturday 2 May
Saturday 30 May
Saturday 13 June
Saturday 18 July

Huge thanks to all who have attended the sessions as they continue to be a big success!

But the Mangos will have a significant role to play in determining who will lay their hands on the trophy with their three remaining fixtures pitting them against Bassett and Bitton (twice).

Bassett and Mangotsfield drew 2-2 when they met in the reverse fixture back in November - a game that saw James Lally's side let slip a 2-0 lead.

This time Bassett need a victory as they aim to maintain their title hopes.

The girls faced Worton and Cheverell Under 12 for their first match of the group stage and started of the tournament in style. Bassett won 3-0 courtesy of a goal from Chloe Guppy and a brace from Christina Croft.

Their second game was against Blunsdon Under 13s, who Bassett were yet to beat in any competition. The teams matched each other like for like throughout, but it was unfortunately Blunsdon who took a last-minute lead after a free kick was deflected into the net.

However, Bassett still did enough to pull through into the semi-finals where they faced Blunsdon Under 12s.

For this match, Charlotte Heathcote tried out a new position, where she played brilliantly as a striker.
The opposition were looking strong after they took the lead in the first few seconds, firing the ball into the goal from the halfway line.

This took Bassett by surprise, but the girls weren't deterred and showed great determination, still believing they could get back in the game. Their hard work paid off when the ball found Molly Jackson at the edge of the box, who placed the ball calmly in the far bottom corner, bringing the score to 1-1.

Not long after, Christina Croft drove down the wing and delivered a pinpoint cross into Maddie Gay, who volleyed the ball into the roof of the net. This turned out to be the winning goal for Bassett and sent them through to the final!

In the final, the girls reunited with Blunsdon Under 13s, but this time they were looking to win. The match was nail-bitingly close, but both teams held on until the final whistle, with the game finishing goalless. This meant that the finalists would be heading straight to the dreaded penalties.

Bassett were cool, calm and collected throughout the shootout. Ava Merwood-Palmer, Chloe Guppy and Ella Oates converted the first three penalties, but so did Blunsdon, leading to sudden death.

There was more pressure now, with each team edging closer to a win. Maddie Gay almost ended the competition with the fourth penalty after a Blunsdon miss, but her strike was fired just wide.

The shootout continued, and the tension was starting to build. Christina Croft tucked away the next penalty alongside the opposition, and it looked like there would be no end to the match.

However, keeper Tia Campbell pulled off a great save to the next Blunsdon strike, leaving the fate of the game in Hollie Peachey's hands. She stepped and slotted the ball away with ease, winning the tournament for Bassett!

Kacy Gower had the honour of lifting the trophy for the club after showing great team spirit. Congratulations to the girls for a brilliant performance. Every single player played a part in the win.

Meanwhile, the Under 14s had their final league game of the season against Trowbridge Wanderers Lionesses, where they looked for a win that would improve their chances of finishing top in North Wilts League Division One.

Bassett started the match a little slow but soon grew into the game. The girls took an early lead when Mia Hughes broke through the defence and slotted the ball home to make the score 1-0.

The Blues came close to scoring multiple times throughout the half, with Mia hitting the post and Ava Hall striking the crossbar.

Ava eventually got a well-deserved goal after she dribbled past three Trowbridge players and fired the ball top corner. Bassett were 2-0 up going into half time.

The girls continued to dominate in the second half, and soon enough, a flurry of goals came in.

Eryn Turnball set up the third, playing in Ava who finished with her left foot for her second goal of the game.

After this, the floodgates opened and the Blues gained momentum.

Bassett were looking dangerous in attack. The ball fell to Eryn in front of goal, who's initial shot was saved, but Ava was on hand to slot the ball into the open net, claiming her hat trick.

Ava was on fire and soon scored a fourth. Alisa Allan crossed the ball into the box, and Ava finished first time to bring the score to 5-0. She took her goal well and was composed on the ball.

Some good play from Lily and Mia led to Alisa firing the ball into the bottom corner of the goal, giving Bassett a 6-0 lead!

More good work found Poppy in space, who finished and sealed off a brilliant 7-0 win for the Blues.

This was a strong finish to the league and a reasonably quiet morning for 'keeper Chloe and the backline.

Supporters Player of the Match was awarded to Ava for a strong performance and an incredible 4 goals.
Coaches Player of the Match went to Alisa, who had a great game in attack and linked up well with her teammates.

The next game for the Under 14s is the North Wilts League Cup final against Marlborough Youth Raiders on Sunday 17 May. Good luck girls!

The U11s played in their own league cup final where they suffered an unfortunate defeat to Calne Town Cobras. However, all the girls played brilliantly and should hold their heads up high after a great performance.

The girls worked tirelessly throughout the game, but it just wasn't meant to be, as Calne clinched the cup.

Despite the outcome, the girls should be immensely proud of themselves. They gave the game their all and were the better side for most of the match. Every single player was brilliant and there were lots of positives to take from the game.

Swindon a class above in one-sided final

Royal Wootton Bassett Town finished as Wiltshire Women's Cup runners-up for the fourth time after losing a one-sided final 7-0 to Swindon Town.

Both teams have enjoyed very successful seasons and are in the hunt for their respective league titles.

But the gulf in class between the tier four and six sides was evident in their County Cup final encounter.

Bassett gave a decent account of themselves. Yet that was not enough to prevent a heavy defeat as Swindon maintained their dominance of a competition that, barring a remarkable upset, they will likely continue to win year after year.

The Robins were 6-0 in front by half time.

Izzy Cook got them going, finding the top corner from the edge of the box, before the prolific Annie Colston scored a quickfire double.

Sky Bedwell soon made it 4-0 as she slotted home.

Taylor MacDonald then curled in a free kick for 5-0.

Bedwell would make it a half dozen for her side before the break, connecting with a Helena Diaz-Butcher cross from close range.

Within ten minutes of the restart, a MacDonald corner evaded everyone in the box, finding its way in for 7-0.

But that would prove to be the end of the scoring as Bassett held out for the remainder of the match.

A consolation goal proved beyond Bassett though as Swindon sealed a victory they would have expected.

Both teams now revert to league action - and their own title tilts.

For Swindon it will come down to a final day battle with FA Women's National League Division One South West leaders Moneyfields - a game they must win.

For Bassett, six more games remain, beginning with a crucial visit to fellow contenders Bitton on Wednesday - a match that the teams enter level on points having played the same number of games (with Bassett boasting the better goal difference).

This may have been an actual cup final - but the visit to Bitton (and next Sunday's home fixture against Mangotsfield United) have all the ingredients of the proverbial versions.

Midweek preview: Bassett face big Bitton test

There's no respite for Royal Wootton Bassett Town following on from Sunday's Wiltshire Women's Cup final. Instead James Lally's side go straight into a pivotal South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North visit to title rivals Bitton on Wednesday night (7pm kick off).

Both teams will be desperate for a win that would impact their opponents' title hopes and also close the gap to leaders Corsham Town with games in hand still to play.

The third meeting between the teams this season, it promises to be a closely fought contest.

Bassett got the better of Bitton in their league meeting in Wiltshire, winning 3-1, before Bitton triumphed 2-0 in a league cup encounter.

Neither side will be satisfied with a draw this time round with a decisive victory sought in this crucial rubber match.

-

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Women's First Team are proudly sponsored by Imagine Cruising.

Season fizzles out with Fairford defeat

Royal Wootton Bassett Town's Hellenic League Premier Division campaign fizzled out with a 2-0 derby defeat away against Fairford Town.

A pair of Sol Pryce goals earned Fairford a scrappy win, with the result meaning Bassett finish the season 16th after going winless in their last nine games, having taken just two points from an available 27.

To end the campaign with such a record is certainly disappointing - especially given the outstanding run that Jonny Aitkenhead's side went on in the ten games prior to that when they racked up 23 points that pretty much secured their Hellenic League Premier Division status.

Bassett have nonetheless been highly competitive in their final, barren series of games. Yet, as was the case against Fairford, they lacked the cunning necessary to see off more experienced, wily opposition.

Chances had been relatively few and far between in the opening period. But Fairford wound up in front going into the break as Sol Pryce rose to flick home Henry Birkett free kick with a glancing header.

Pryce then made it two around the hour mark. Receiving a pass from Charlie Holliday, he spun past Jack Coward before racing through on goal and slamming the ball beyond Harrison Ellis.

Bassett failed to summon much of a response to either goal, with the best chance they had being a curling effort from Rudi Hopkins that Ben Mitchell comfortably held.

Fairford then twice came close to extending their lead but fortunately for Bassett Holliday and Roan Young both blazed over when well placed.

It wasn't the way Bassett had hoped for to end the season. But it perhaps encapsulated a campaign in which the team have showed plenty of promise yet often struggled to get results.

There is plenty of space for this exciting young team to grow though. And with a full year now under the belts, next season is the time to properly kick on.

Girls’ Section Review: Under 14s continue push for title

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Under 14 Girls had their penultimate match of the North Wilts League Division One season against Durrington Seahawks on Saturday, and they looked to claim three more crucial points and remain top of the table.

The game was held on a tough pitch with a slight hill, but this didn't stop Bassett from playing some great football.

They were rewarded with an early goal five minutes in through Mia Hughes, who finished calmly at the end of a corner to put the Blues one up.

The girls didn't stop there and secured another goal not long after. Sienna Matthews poked a good ball through to Eryn Turnball who finished past the keeper to make the score 2-0.

Durrington were still looking dangerous and rattled the crossbar twice. However, they failed to convert a few clear chances whereas Bassett had their shooting boots on.

The Blues went on to score another two goals in quick succession.

The third came from Mia, who claimed her brace by heading home an Ava Hall corner.

Ava herself scored the fourth. Sienna delivered a great ball to the back post which Ava pounced on. Her initial shot was saved but she fired home the rebound to put Bassett in the lead by four goals.

At half time the Blues were 4-0 up and comfortably dominating possession.

The second half continued in a similar fashion, with the Blues looking calm and composed on the ball.

The girls managed to keep a clean sheet and were defensively solid.

Mia had a few more good chances to put the ball away, but unfortunately her shots were fired just wide.

However, she still had a big influence on the game, setting up Eryn for her second goal of the game. Mia slotted a lovely ball through to Eryn, who poked the ball into the bottom corner of the goal and sealed off a 5-0 win for Bassett.

Player of the match went to Eryn for a strong performance up front, and to Maya, who worked incredibly hard in defence.

Weekend preview: Excitement in store with Cup final and league finale

Royal Wootton Bassett Town are set for an exciting weekend as the Women's First Team face Swindon Town in the Wiltshire County Cup final on Sunday while the Men's First Team finish their Hellenic League Premier Division campaign with a derby visit to Fairford Town on Saturday.

Sunday's final sees Bassett aiming for their second County Cup title - and what would be a huge upset against higher level opponents.

A full preview of the game can be read here: https://rwbtfc.co.uk/news/00005937.

The game takes place at Melksham Town's Meads of Melksham Community Stadium, 2pm kick off.

It promises to be an entertaining final - so please do come along and give Bassett your support!

Prior to that Jonny Aitkenhead's side look to end the 2025-26 season on a high - and avenge a 4-0 home defeat against Fairford that they suffered back in August when they visit the Reds (3pm kick off).

Both teams have experienced contrasting fortunes in the final run in.

Bassett are winless in eight with a number of narrow defeats and two draws to their name in that spell.

Fairford have been on a strong run but saw their playoff push came to an agonising end on Easter Monday as a dramatic, late defeat to Corsham Town extinguished their hopes of a postseason place.

Both will give their all in this final derby of the season with bragging rights on the line ahead of the summer break.

Meanwhile, Mangotsfield United and Whitchurch's 4-4 draw meant they both lost ground.

Although enjoying the better of the chances, it took until shortly after the half hour mark for Bassett to take the lead. But they did so with an incisive, fluid move. Poppy Wannell's tackle saw the ball into the feet of Laura Jefferies. From the halfway line she clipped a pass into the path of path of Honor Fraser who fed Lauren Bulley to slot coolly into the bottom corner.

Bassett doubled their lead shortly after the restart. Tori Taylor's ball over the top led to panic in the Gloucester defence and after a wayward clearance, Wannell took full advantage, steering in from a tight angle.

Hannah Gulliver then sealed victory, stealing possession before charging down on goal and producing a composed one-on-one finish.

Next up for Bassett is the Wiltshire County Cup final against Swindon Town before a pair of decisive league fixtures away at Bitton and at home against Mangotsfield.

Bassett set for Women’s County Cup final this Sunday!

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Women's First Team aim to claim silverware - and spring a surprise - this Sunday (19 April) when they face Swindon Town in the Wiltshire County Women's Cup final.

The game takes place at Melksham Town's Meads of Melksham Community Stadium, 2pm kick off.

It promises to be an entertaining final - so please do come along and give Bassett your support!

In Bassett's fifth appearance in the County Cup final, they will be gunning for their second title as they seek both league and cup honours this season.

Yet they face the toughest test possible in the form of a Swindon side who ply their trade two levels higher - and who are also aiming for a league and cup double of their own having enjoyed a stellar season in the tier four FA Women's National League Division One South West.

Both sides have enjoyed straightforward paths to the final.

Bassett's journey began with a 11-1 home win against Wiltshire Senior League side Calne Town before an 11-0 quarter final victory against Highworth Town and 6-0 semi final triumph against Highworth Under 18s.

Swindon, meanwhile, notched up double figures in their second round tie away at Salisbury (14-0) and quarter final encounter with Corsham Town (19-0) before racking up a 9-0 semi final victory against Bemerton Heath Harlequins.

Bassett are therefore the third tier six side the Robins will face - with James Lally's team hoping to fare much better than Corsham and Bemerton with the trophy on the line.

Bassett have met Swindon in the final before, losing 7-1 in 2013-14. Bassett suffered a 2-0 final defeat against Swindon's Development team in 2017-18 before thrashing Swindon Spitfires 9-0 a season later to get their hands on the county prize for the first time.

Bassett's last final appearance was a 3-0 loss against Warminster Town in 2022-23.

Bassett have since exited the County Cup against Swindon in each of the last two season, losing 2-0 at the semi final stage in 2024-25 after a 6-0 quarter final defeat a year earlier.

Now Bassett will be aiming for an upset at the biggest stage of them all.

Senior Presentation Evening - Friday 15 May

Royal Wootton Bassett Town will be holding its Senior Presentation Evening on Friday 15 May for its Men's and Women's First Team sides and Men's Development team.

The event will take place in the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground clubhouse. Those attending are asked to arrive at 7pm for a prompt 7.30pm start.

The evening will see presentation of awards for the 2025-26 season for the club's three senior teams.

Food and drink will be provided while there will also be music and dancing following the presentation.

All players are welcome to attend, alongside their partners and family members as well as supporters and sponsors.

Those wishing to attend are invited to contact relevant team managers, Head of Men's Section Rab MacLeod ( robert.macleod@rwbtfc.co.uk) or Head of Women's Section Bryan Wood ( bryan.wood@rwbtfc.co.uk).

We look forward to seeing you there to celebrate a successful season!

Bassett suffer another late blow

Royal Wootton Bassett Town's winless run stretched to eight games as Hereford Pegasus snatched a last minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground.

Jonny Aitkenhead's side have made a habit of failing to see games out during what has become a highly frustrating stretch of games to end their season.

From conceding last minute goals in defeats against champions Slimbridge and playoff bound Roman Glass St George to failing to hold out onto leads against Mangotsfield United and now Pegasus, Bassett have dropped a number of valuable points that mean the best finish they can hope for is the 15th place they currently occupy.

And to guarantee they don't slip down the table when the season ends next week, Bassett need Hallen to drop points in the two games in hand they have still to play.

Bassett led early against Pegasus courtesy of Ben Cleary's well taken 20th goal of the season. The Pegasus defence failed to deal with an Ollie Smith clearance, and Cleary took full advantage, taking one touch before lashing a low 20 yard drive into the bottom left corner.

However Pegasus were level within a minute as the visitors seized on a rare heavy touch from Harry Messenger, the ball being worked up to Harry Pitman who coolly swept home from just inside the area.

Rudi Hopkins forced a low save from Matthew Apperley before Jordan Williamson headed a corner narrowly over from close range as the teams went into the interval all square.

The first big chance of the second half fell to Pegasus Williamson whose curling effort was palmed over by Harrison Ellis.

But Bassett wound up going ahead when Finn Hopkins received a pass from brother Rudi and fired in on the turn.

And the hosts seemed destined to finally end their winless run.

They had opportunities to extend their lead, two of which fell to Freddie who Wyatt blazed over with just Apperley to beat before seeking the 'keeper parry a low effort around the post.

But it seemed as if Hopkins' goal was going to be the difference and enough to seal three points.

That was until stoppage time when Bassett failed to clear from an Apperley punt forward. The loose ball fell to Pitman who floated a pass into the area which defender Joe Davies - thrown forward late on - glanced into the net.

It was a sloppy, frustrating goal to concede - more so given the circumstances as Bassett once again let points slip out of their grasp.

Twins return to trouble Bassett

Highworth Town took the derby spoils as a pair of players who started the season with Royal Wootton Bassett Town came back to haunt Jonny Aitkenhead's side.

All four Highworth goals in their 4-2 win featured either Marcel or Otis Lewis as they came back to bite their former club.

Their departure from Bassett has been mutually beneficial, coinciding with the midseason run that all but guaranteed Bassett's Hellenic League Premier Division status while giving the twins a new lease of life. But on this afternoon there was only one side who benefited.

The first big chance of the match fell to Bassett as Highworth 'keeper James Walker produced an acrobatic save to tip Ben Cleary's powerful header from Harry Messenger's teasing cross over the bar.

Marcel Lewis then gave the visitors an early lead as he struck a low free kick from the right edge of the box into the bottom left corner.

And he would have soon had a second were it not for a fine saving tackle from Lewis Thorne.

Bassett then equalised as Rudi Hopkins' deft touch guided a Jack Coward ball out from the back into the path of Ed Taylor who took one touch before coolly slotting home.

An end of season contest with little riding on the outcome except for local pride, both sides sought to attack in an end to end contest.

For Bassett Coward guided headers from two Hopkins corners just off target, while Thorne saw an effort deflected over.

But Highworth would go into the break in front.

Two linebreaking passes saw the ball worked up to Marcel Lewis in the right corner and he crossed for Jordan Annear to guide in with a side foot volley.

Bassett were further behind shortly after the restart.

Cheldon Valere picked Messenger's' pocket and played in Marcel Lewis whose low drive from the edge of the area was parried. Annear was quickest to the rebound but saw his effort blocked only for Valere to mop things up.

To their credit Bassett's response was immediate to reduce the deficit back to one.

Marcel Lewis took a theatrical tumble just outside the area in the hope of winning a free kick. But the referee failed to fall for his dive. Messenger then swept a diagonal pass forward that Cleary expertly controlled before arrowing a fine effort into the bottom corner.

Bassett couldn't summon an equaliser though and the Worthians wrapped things up with ten minutes to go.

A counter attack saw substitute Alex Parsons feed Marcel Lewis on the left and his low cross was tapped in at the far post by brother Otis.

Highworth are now guaranteed to finish above Bassett with this result having extended their lead to six points while the Worthians also boast a far superior goal difference.

For Bassett it's now seven games without a win, with the aim in the final two games of the campaign to be to finish with at least one more victory.

Bassett victorious in Holland!

The Royal Wootton Bassett Town tradition of annual Holland tours meant that forty eight youth players went on the trip of a lifetime, kicking off the Easter holidays with four fast-paced days in the Netherlands.

The party consisted of the Under 12 and 13 Blue and U13 Girls squads. The teams would be battling it out with sister club FC 's-Gravenzande in a bid to win the Friendship Trophy, as well as Sportclub Monster.

Day 1

The teams gathered bleary-eyed at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground at 4:15 in the morning. Despite the early start, everyone was excited at the prospect of playing football abroad. The Under 13 Blues would be taking part in their second tour and looked to set an example to the two other teams who were experiencing their first ever trip.

The party swiftly boarded the coach and had departed by 4:45am. Systematic and structured organisation meant that the border crossing went smoothly, and the teams reached Dover to take the 10:30am ferry to Calais in good time.

The voyage across sea was successful, with thankfully nobody falling ill due to motion-sickness! The tour party then continued their journey by coach across France and Belgium, with a quick pit stop at the services.

Everyone reached the Stay Okay Hostel in Dordrecht by 6:00 pm in good spirits, although they were slightly worn out after ten hours spent travelling.

Rooms were allocated, bags were unpacked and beds were made before the tour party settled down for dinner together at 7:30pm.

The players were given a brief amount of time to unwind and explore their new surroundings. Eventually, everyone made for bed at 10:00pm in the hopes of getting a good night's sleep and resting for the busy few days that would follow.

Day 2

Another early start was in store for the tour party, with everyone awakening at 6:45am. Having lost two hours of sleep during the night, everyone would have much preferred a lie-in but instead headed out for a morning walk at 7:30am.

The teams and coaching staff enjoyed a quick breakfast back at the hostel prior to the opening matches off the tour at Sportclub Monster, which would be kicking off at 10:30am. Bags were hastily packed and everyone successfully boarded the coach on time.

The party arrived at Sportclub Monster as per schedule, where all three teams kicked off the tour in style with three unbeaten scorelines.

The Under 12 Blues were victorious in their first game playing eleven aside. They sealed off a 4-2 win with Josh Kirkup scoring two, and Eliott Bray and Marko Morse also finding the back of the net.

The Under 13 Girls drew 2-2 against an Under 15 side, with Christina Croft netting a brace. The girls were full of energy and got stuck in against a team that were older than them.

The Under 13 Blues claimed a 3-0 win with Cam Greaney finding the back of the net twice and Mikey Spencer scoring the third. It was a well-deserved victory for the boys as they had been clinical in front of goal.

Results vs Sportclub Monster:
Under 12 Blue: Won 4-2 (Player of the Match: Ryan Flanagan)
Under 13 Blue: Won 3-0 (Player of the Match: Ellis Paviour)
Under 13 Girls: Drew 2-2 (Player of the Match: Jess Riley)

Some time was spent at the Monster clubhouse, where the hosts were very welcoming. Then it was back to the hostel for some free time.

The teams at first gathered to award the Players of the Match awards and have a quick cake break, before heading off with their coaches to spend the afternoon doing an activity of their choosing.

The teams were brought back together again by their second evening meal at 6:00pm. This would in fact be their final dinner at the hostel, as the tour party would be out for all the next day.

A fun football themed quiz followed, in which all the players participated, before retiring to bed.

Day 3

This would be the tour party's final full day in the Netherlands, and by far the busiest too!

Everyone woke bright and early for another walk around the grounds and enjoyed a continental breakfast together. However, there wasn't much time to spare as the party would be departing at 9:30am for a tour of Eredivisie club Sparta Rotterdam's stadium.

Everyone received an interesting all access visit around the grounds of the team known as 'The Castle Lords'.

The sun was out so the party decided to make the most of the weather and headed to the seaside for a couple of hours. However, everyone agreed to stick to the shops and the pier rather than the freezing cold sea!

The final three games of the tour were held at FC 's-Gravenzande where three more major wins were claimed for Bassett to secure the Friendship Trophy.

The Under 12 Blues secured a massive 11-2 win with four goals from Josh Kirkup, a hat trick from Toby Hodson and braces from both Elliot Bray and Chase Bailey.

The Under 13 Blues championed with a 6-2 victory courtesy of goals from Cameron Greaney and Jack Anderton and braces from Mikey Spencer and Jack Saunders.

The Under 13 Girls claimed their first win of the tour, beating FC 's-Gravenzande 3-0. Christina Croft found the back of the net twice and Hollie Peachey sealed of the win with a last-minute strike.

Results vs FC 's-Gravenzande:
Under 12 Blue: Won 11-2 (Player of the Match: Josh Kirkup)
Under 13 Blue: Won 6-2 (Player of the Match: Mikey Spencer)
Under 13 Girls: Won 3-0 (Player of the Match: Aamira Sakiru)

After the games, the teams headed to the clubhouse for a meal and social evening. There, Bassett were presented with the Friendship Trophy as a result of their unbeaten streak throughout the evening. The players spent the evening celebrating their well-deserved win.

Day 4

The final day arrived quickly, and most of the players were reluctant to go home after their brilliant time on the trip. However, everyone was looking forward to seeing their families.

Bags were packed and loaded onto the coach and beds were stripped. The tour party headed down for a final breakfast, where the final prizes were awarded to wrap up the trip.

Prize winners

Under 12 Blue Player of the Tour: Elliot Bray
Under 13 Blue Player of the Tour: Will Mason
Under 13 Girls Player of the Tour: Christina Croft
Chris Kirkland Outstanding Contribution Award: The Under 13 Blue team

The Under 13 Blues were given this renowned award for setting such a great example to everyone on the trip. They set a high standard for behaviour and attitude and were leaders to the other teams.

By 9:30am, the tour party were on the coach and headed back to England. The journey once again went smoothly, with the party reaching the ferry port with hours to spare and everyone arriving back at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground ahead of schedule.

Thank you to everyone involved in the Holland Tour that helped to make it yet another brilliant trip!

Weekend preview: Men face home finale against Pegasus

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Men's First Team play their final home Hellenic League Premier Division fixture of the 2025-26 season against Hereford Pegasus on Saturday (Gerard Buxton Sports Ground, 3pm kick off).

Jonny Aitkenhead's side may have had an up and down campaign, but on home turf they have fared well with 7 wins, 4 draws and 7 defeats from their 18 league games so far.

And they will be looking to finish the campaign with a winning record at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground by claiming a positive result against a Pegasus side who sit nine points in front of Bassett.

The teams shared the points in an entertaining 2-2 draw in Hereford in January, while Bassett are unbeaten in their last five games at home against Pegasus, including four straight wins in which they have conceded just once.

Admission on Saturday is £8 for adults, £5 for concessions and free for RWBTFC youth members.

Please do come along and show your appreciation to Bassett's young side for one last time on home territory this season!

Also this weekend the Women's First Team return to action after the Easter break with an important South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North visit to Gloucester City Reserves (2pm kick off).

After a draw last time out, Bassett will be seeking to get back to winning ways against a team they beat 2-0 at home back in October.

Meanwhile on Saturday the Development team end their Wiltshire League Premier Division campaign the way they started it - against Melksham Town Reserves (2pm kick off).

Mark Simpkins' team are on the road and will be aiming to finish on a high.

Sunday also sees Bassett host the Wiltshire League Women's Cup final between FC Abbey Meads and Melksham Town (Gerard Buxton Sports Ground, 2pm kick off).

It is always an honour for the club and Sports Association to host cup finals, and we wish the best of luck to both teams involved.
