Now Bassett have found out who they will be playing in the 2026-27 South West Regional Women's Football League Premier Division.

This follows the Football Association releasing provisional allocations for all leagues at tiers one through six of the Women's Football Pyramid.

Ten teams will make up the Premier Division which compromises a range of sides Bassett have previously faced and a trio of new league opponents.

Bassett faced Gloucester City in 2024-25 when the Tigers finished top of Division One North, and Poole Town in 2023-24 when the Dolphins pipped Bassett to the Division One Eastern title.

Forest Green Rovers, who eliminated James Lally's side from the Women's FA Cup last season, and Sherborne Town are holdovers from Bassett's most recent Premier Division campaign in 2022-23. The longest-serving current members of the division, they will be on the promotion hunt after finishing second and third respectively in 2025-26.

Having suffered relegation from the FA Women's National League Division One South West, Portishead Town return to tier five. Portishead edged out Bassett on goal difference to claim the 2017-18 Eastern Division title and were Premier Division opponents of Bassett from 2018-19 to 2020-21 when they earned promotion to tier four. The teams will now meet again for the first time in six years.

It's eight years since Bassett last met AEK Boco in the Eastern Division. Indeed, Boco are the league opponents Bassett have the longest history with, having played in Gloucestershire County Women's League Division One together from 2012-13 to 2015-16, with Bassett facing their Reserve or Development side in all other County League campaigns from 2009-10 through to their promotion to tier six at the end of 2016-17.

Then for the first time, Bassett will cross paths with Yate Town, Saltash United and Yeovil Town in the league.

Bassett have played numerous friendlies against Yate when they were attached to Pucklechurch Sports, but never a competitive contest. Pucklechurch were first promoted to the South West Regional League for the 2022-23 campaign and immediately won the Eastern Division with Bassett suffering relegation that year. They have now moved across to Yate.

Cornish outfit Saltash, meanwhile, will be entering their second season in the Premier Division having won Division One South in 2024-25.

2025-26 Division One South champions Yeovil complete the trio of new opponents. The Glovers are a big name in women's football having previously competed in the Women's Super League from 2017 to 2019. However, financial difficulties saw them merge with Bridgwater Town in 2021 and drop the Yeovil name. But recent years have seen a revived Yeovil side climb up through the Somerset County League and up to tier five having spent two years at tier six.

The full provisional constitution for the 2026-27 South West Regional Women's Football League Premier Division, featuring ten sides, is as follows:

AEK Boco
Forest Green Rovers
Gloucester City
Poole Town
Portishead Town
Royal Wootton Bassett Town
Saltash United
Sherborne Town
Yate Town
Yeovil Town

The constitution is, at present, provisional and subject to change.

South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North champions

Some may think it's a cliche, but Royal Wootton Bassett Town were proof that 'defence wins championships' as they outlasted Corsham Town and Bitton to finish as champions of the 2025-26 South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North.

In their 22 league games Bassett kept an astonishing 14 clean sheets - one more than the number of goals (13) they conceded over the course of the campaign.

That's not to say that Bassett were entirely reliant on their backline for their success. Indeed, they racked up an impressive 61 goals.

But in a tight, exciting title race that went down to the wire, Bassett's defensive strength proved decisive.

Across the course of the season, Bassett won six times by the odd goal - including at home against Downend Flyers in their league opener when Elle Scott scored the only goal of the game.

That victory was the start of a ten game unbeaten run that continued with a 2-0 home triumph against Gloucester City Reserves and 9-0 thrashing of Stockwood Wanderers.

Bassett's first major test then came at home against the previous season's runners-up Bitton, a side who finished a place above Bassett in 2024-25.

But it would be Bassett who struck a first, big blow as Briony Hurd, Maddy Elliott and Lauren Bulley were on target in a convincing 3-1 victory.

Bassett's first dropped points of the season followed though away against newly promoted Mangotsfield United who had made a hot start to their campaign. Bassett had led 2-0 through Elliott and Tori Taylor, but the hosts came back to claim a draw.

A Bulley brace got Bassett back on track in a 2-0 home victory against Paulton Rovers before an Honor Fraser double paced a big 5-0 win against Whitchurch, who - like Mangotsfield- had started life at tier six brightly.

Another Bulley brace sealed a nervy 2-1 win at Downend before Bassett saw in the new year with a tough 1-1 derby draw against Cirencester Town. An 8-0 thrashing of AFC Brislington then made it ten unbeaten heading into a vital home fixture against Corsham.

Despite their start, Bassett entered that game third in the table in a congested five team battle at the top. And they would slip to fourth as two second half goals earned Corsham a smash and grab win.

Bassett bounced back as Taylor grabbed the only goal of the game away at Bath City and Bulley and Laura Jefferies scored to avenge their earlier Corsham loss. Then came a 5-0 win at Brislington.

But a 0-0 draw at Whitchurch, despite extending their run of consecutive clean sheets to four games, did Bassett few favours as they still trailed leaders Corsham by three points with two games in hand to play and had Bitton hitting form.

A 3-0 away win at Gloucester followed as Bulley, Hannah Gulliver and Poppy Wannell found the net.

Bassett's next fixture was then a midweek trip to Bitton - and a crucial fixture went the visitors' way courtesy of a Taylor thunderbolt.

That left Bassett, courtesy of their superior goal difference, more or less needing four wins from their final five games to seal the title.

Bulley and Jefferies sealed a nervous, hard fought 2-0 triumph at home against Mangotsfield to begin the run in on the right foot.

But Bassett then suffered a shock 3-2 reverse away at Stockwood in their next game to finally end a run of seven straight clean sheets and put the pressure on.

At home against Cirencester, Bassett seemed on course to miss out on victory too. They trailed before going down to ten
players. Briony Hurd equalised though and Megan Young snatched a late winner.

Victory by the odd goal in five at home against Bath in their penultimate game - coupled with a draw between Bitton and Corsham - then put Bassett on the brink with their destiny in their own hands.

A win away at Paulton in their final game would seal top spot - and Bassett delivered in style. Kelly Nightingale and top scorer Bulley found the net in the first half before Scott produced a second half hat trick in a title clinching 5-0 thrashing.

Bassett's outstanding season had got the big reward it deserved.

Wiltshire County Women's Cup Runners-Up

To go along with their league title, Bassett also reached the final of the Wiltshire Women's Cup for the fifth time in the club's history.

Bassett would have to settle for runners-up though (for the fourth time in the competition) after suffering a 7-0 defeat to big favourites Swindon Town in the final.

Bassett's path to the final saw them rack up the goals.

Maddy Elliott scored five, while six other scorers netted, in an 11-1 home win against Calne Town in the second round.

That set up a quarter final date with Highworth Town - and Bassett would again hit double figures, this time without reply in an 11-0 victory. Lauren Bulley hit a hat trick while Kat Bach and Emma Sykes backed her up with braces.

Bassett would then face Highworth again in the semi finals - this time in the form of their talented Under 18s team. Again drawn at home, a trio of braces from Elliott, Briony Hurd and Tori Taylor booked a final place.

Facing a Swindon side who themselves would finish as league champions in the tier four FA Women's National League Division One South West, Bassett were always going to be up against it. And so proved. Despite giving a decent account of themselves, Bassett were well beaten as Swindon went 6-0 up in the first half before adding a further goal after the restart to continue their dominance of the competition.

Development team management change

Royal Wootton Bassett Town have made a change in their Development team management structure.

After six seasons with the Development side, including the past four as manager, the team will be moving into the 2026- 2027 season without Mark Simpkins at the helm.

Mark leaves with the club's best wishes and sincere thanks for his outstanding efforts in what at times can be a challenging role.

Simpkins, a former captain of the Men's First Team during his playing days, played a pivotal role as coach in Bassett's 2021-22 title winning campaign.

Meanwhile over the past four seasons with Simpkins as manager, the Development team have continued to be highly competitive playing a positive brand of football in a division that has grown stronger and stronger each year in terms of the calibre of opposition.

Stepping up to the role as manager will be Josh Connolly who served in an assistant capacity with the Development team last season. He will be joined by coaches Steve Heary and Lee Chamberlain.

Commenting on the changes, Head of Men's Section Rab MacLeod said: "I want to personally thank Mark for all he has done with the Development team, as well as for helping me as I adjusted into my role in the club. He is a proper football person and will add real value to any club. We wish him every success in the future."

Celebrating Success: Under 18 Division 1 Champions and Cup Runners-Up

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Under 18 Blue enjoyed an outstanding 2025-26 campaign, romping to the North Wilts League Division One title while coming agonisingly close to completing the double as they fell short on penalties in the North Wilts League Cup final.

North Wilts League Under 18 Division One Champions

Bassett were runaway champions in North Wilts League Division One, dropping just three points all season while finishing fourteen points clear of runners-up AFC Park.

The Blues would concede just three times in their opening five games as they beat Malmesbury Victoria (6-1), Stratton Youth (3-0), Wroughton Youth (7-1), Wanborough Junior Black (6-0) and Ferndale Rodbourne (8-1).

They then conceded three goals in consecutive games - but still won both as the hit Stratton Youth for six at home and put eight past FC Abbey Meads Youth Grey.

A 5-0 win at Wroughton Youth followed before a pair of crucial 3-1 victories against Park had Bassett top and threatening to pull clear.

That they did, extending their winning streak into double figures with a 10-1 thrashing of Draycott FC Dynamo and narrow wins against Ramsbury (5-4 away and 3-1 at home).

After 14 wins though, their perfect record came to an end away against Croft Junior Blue as Bassett were beaten 3-1.

But that would be Bassett's only league defeat.

They soared past Park 8-2 before avenging their loss to Croft with a 6-1 home win.

Bassett's final five games were all then awarded, with the title wrapped up

North Wilts League Under 18 Cup Runners-Up

Bassett would then come up just short in their quest to secure a historic double, falling on penalties to Ramsbury in a sudden death shootout after letting slip a 2-0 lead.

After being awarded their second round tie against Wroughton Youth, Bassett saw off Division One rivals AFC Park 3-1 in the quarter finals before a convincing 5-1 victory against Stratton Youth in the last four.

That set up a matchup with Ramsbury who Bassett had beaten twice in the league.

They seemed on course for a third win - and to become the first Under 18 team to complete a North Wilts League double - courtesy of goals from Jack Moss and Rauf Acheampong. But, after seeing further chances to extend their lead go begging, Bassett conceded twice late on. And Ramsbury would have the final say on penalties.

Bowen’s on fire to win Fantasy League!

While Jarrod Bowen had a final gameday to forget as his West Ham United side were relegated, namesake Spencer had plenty to celebrate as he was crowned the 2025-26 RWBTFC Fantasy Football League champion!

Entering the final round of games with a healthy lead, Bowen's Frimping Pong outfit sealed the deal with an impressive 79 points to take his season tally to 2,412.

That left former Under 18s star Bowen (who also featured for Bassett's Men's First Team) 40 points clear of runner-up Vitor Oliveira and his vitigna's team side(2,372), with Tomas Warren's Chief Tuggers (2,338) snatching third from Robert Shepherd's Canine Capers (2,335).

Jacob Hayden's Wirtz Nightmare and Matt Simpson's Simmo FC were not far behind, tying for fifth on 2,331 points.

Bowen becomes the seventh winner of the league in the last seven years.

Last year's champions Finlay Cranswick-Coates finished around the middle of the pack in 122nd place with 2024-25 champion Ben Tomes faring better by placing 11th.

2022-23 champion Joe Mitchell came a respectable 9th in the league - and made sure his name was once more etched onto the honours board as his Above Average Joes beat Arthur Kunz's MLKS Włodawianka 59-40 in the final of the cup competition. That result followed a narrow semi final victory for Mitchell's men over reigning cup holder Steven Astin's ABCDE FC.

Huge thanks go to all 247 entrants who took part in this year's Fantasy League.

The Fantasy League is always great fun and, importantly, remains free to enter for all - whether that be players (current and former), coaches, supporters, parents, volunteers, etc.

The league will be up and running again next season for its 17th edition – and we look forward to seeing even more participants.

Not only did they wi the North Wilts League Cup final, they also finished as runners-up in North Wilts League Division One.

North Wilts League Under 14 Girls Cup Winners

Bassett's cup success came courtesy of a string of impressive performances, culminating in an emphatic 6-1 final victory against Marlborough Youth Raiders.

Their route to the final began with a 4-1 quarter final win against Bradford Town Ravens thanks to goals from Mia Hughes (2), Ava Hall and Sienna Matthews.

That set up a semi final against eventual Division One Champions Tyrone Mings Hurricanes with Bassett coming from behind to win 2-1 courtesy of Hall and Hughes.

Next was the final against Marlborough - who Bassett had beaten in a trio of high scoring, yet closely fought league games. The final would again deliver goals - but Bassett ran out comfortable winners. Hughes hit a hat trick, Hall bagged a brace while Eryn Turnbull completed the scoring

North Wilts League Under 14 Girls Division One Runners-Up

While Tyrone Mings Hurricanes wound up as champions, Bassett finished far ahead of the rest of the field after winning seven straight to finish the season.

Bassett had a middling start to the season. Although winning their league opener 4-3 against Marlborough Youth Raiders, they would have just four points to show from their opening four matches after drawing with Ferndale Rodbourne (0-0) and losing to Durrington Seahawks (0-2) and Tyrone Mings Hurricanes (0-4).

A wild 8-5 win against Marlborough got them back on the winning track and kicked off a strong run.

After a 1-1 draw away at FC Abbey Meads Purple, Bassett beat Ferndale 3-0, Abbey Meads 2-0 and Tyrone Mings 2-1 - the latter being an especially impressive result that put Bassett top at Christmas.

At this stage it was a very close race with Bassett four points ahead of both Tyrone Mings and Durrington who held games in hand.

Bassett started the new year with defeat though, losing 2-0 at home against Tyrone Mings in their final league meeting.

That would prove to be the last time Bassett dropped points though as they went on an outstanding run.

Narrow home wins against Ferndale (3-1) and Marlborough Youth (4-3) got Bassett going before a more convincing 5-1 triumph away at FC Abbey Meads.

Bassett then hosted Durrington in an important match that they won 3-1 to move seven points ahead of their rivals.

A 7-1 thumping of Trowbridge Wanderers Lionesses made it five straight wins before Bassett thrashed Durrington 5-0 away from home and Trowbridge 7-0 on the road to seal a top two finish.

Tyrone Mings still had four games to play and seven points to make - a gap they overcame thanks to being awarded their final three games.

Girls’ Section Presentation Winners

End of season presentations were held at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground for Royal Wootton Bassett Town's girls' section teams on Friday.

Celebrating the conclusion of the 2025-26 season, at each age group awards were presented for the Manager's, Players' and Supporters' Player of the Year as well as the Most Improved Player / Clubperson of the Year. Congratulations Ava on a deserved award!

Celebrating Success: North Wilts League U14 Division 4 Runners-Up

Eight consecutive victories saw Royal Wootton Bassett Town Under 14 Yellow finish strongly and claim runners-up spot in North Wilts League Division Four in 2025-26.

With eight games to go, Bassett seemed out of the running for honours, sitting in fifth place, eleven points behind second place Old Town Athletic (with two games in hand) and six behind third place Lydiard Millicent Juniors.

But a phenomenal run saw Bassett close those gaps and ultimately finish seven points ahead of both teams.

Bassett began their campaign in stunning fashion, hitting double figures in their opening league fixtures away against Stratton Youth Blue (14-2) and Highworth Town Juniors J (13-0).

But consecutive defeats followed against Stratton Juniors Lions (0-3) and Wroughton Youth Tornadoes (1-8).

Bassett returned to form though, with five straight victories including a 9-1 revenge thrashing of Stratton Juniors, 7-0 away triumph at FC Abbey Meads Youth Green and 14-2 home victory against Stratton Youth.

A 4-2 defeat to Lydiard brought that streak to an end, though an impressive 3-2 away win at Wroughton Tornadoes - the only defeat the eventual champions would suffer - got them back on track.

Another double figure feast took Bassett past Marlborough Youth Mavericks (11-1). However, consecutive 2-2 draws against Wroughton Youth Wrens and Ashton Keynes slowed Bassett's progress and seemed to limit their chances of achieving honours.

That was until their eight game winning run hauled Bassett into second.

It began with a 5-1 win at Lydiard before Marlborough were put to the sword 8-1. Wroughton Wrens were seen off 4-1 at home before huge wins against Highworth (17-0) and Wanborough Junior Black (12-4) pulled Bassett within touching distance of Old Town.

Bassett's next two games were against Old Town - and a pair of convincing wins (5-0 at home and 4-1 away) ensured Bassett would finish above their rivals.

A final 10-1 win at Wanborough then guaranteed second spot.

Register interest to join Men’s Development Team for 2026-27 season

Ahead of the 2026-27 season, Royal Wootton Bassett Town's Men's Development team are inviting expressions of interest from players interested in joining the club.

The team will once again be playing in the step seven Wiltshire League Premier Division, offering competitive football in a strong division that features various first team sides and other Development teams from clubs playing at steps four to five.

Those who wish to express an interest in joining are invited to complete the form at the following link: http://bit.ly/4nHWbPx.

Capping a fine campaign with honours, Bassett beat rivals for second spot Ashton Keynes Panthers 3-1 in their final match to leapfrog their opponents - and avenge a 6-2 loss suffered earlier in the season.

Cup action meant Bassett were playing catch up from the off. They played just two league games before the end of October - both of which were wins against Wroughton Youth Wolves (4-3) and Pewsey Vale (6-2).

A pair of draws followed at home against Ferndale Rodbourne Reds (2-2) and Pewsey (5-5), but a 4-1 victory against Liden Community Lightning made it five unbeaten.

That streak was snapped by eventual champions Croft Junior Blue who edged a win by the odd goal in five.

Yet Bassett rebounded well, seeing off Cirencester Town (2-0) and Wroughton (4-2) before draws with FC Abbey Meads Youth Purple (1-1) and Ferndale (2-2).

There followed the 6-2 loss to Ashton Keynes though - a result that left Bassett three points behind their rivals having played a game more.

Four straight wins - including three on the road in which Bassett did not concede - kept alive hopes of finishing runners-up. Liden (3-0), Cirencester (2-0) and FC Abbey Meads (1-0) were all beaten away from home before a 3-1 triumph at home against DC Youth Dynamos.

A 2-2 draw with DC Youth and 5-1 home defeat against Croft came next. Thankfully for Bassett though, Ashton Keynes fell into a deeper rut that turned their final game of the season into a decider.

And Bassett delivered to seal second.

Bassett’s title success by the numbers

Royal Wootton Bassett Town claimed the South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North in style, beating Paulton Rovers 5-0 in the final game of the season - a result that ensured Bassett finished just ahead of Corsham Town and Bitton at the end of a thrilling title race.
The title was a fantastic achievement as James Lally's side finished top of a highly competitive division to secure a return to tier five after three seasons.
This article sets out some of the key numbers that help explain why this year the title was Bassett's.
1
Bassett's final position in the South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North table - securing promotion back to tier five
2
The number of league games Bassett lost all season (2-0 at home against Corsham Town and 3-2 away at Stockwood Wanderers
3
The number of games Bassett drew all season - all of which were away (0-0 at Whitchurch, 1-1 at Cirencester Town and 2-2 at Mangotsfield United)
4
The number of games in which Bassett faced a deficit (the two games they lost and both Derby fixtures against Cirencester Town from which Bassett claimed four points)
5
Bassett's margin of victory against Paulton Rovers to seal the title
6
The number of victories Bassett recorded by a single goal margin - including crucial wins down the stretch away at Bitton (1-0) and at home against Cirencester Town 2-1) and Bath City (3-2)
Also the number of victories Bassett recorded by more than a two goal margin - demonstrating the team's ability to grind out results
7
The consecutive league games in which Bassett kept a clean sheet, beginning with a 1-0 win away at Bath City through their 2-0 home victory against Mangotsfield United. That amounts to 630 minutes of football (excluding additional time played) - or 10 and a half hours. The streak ended with defeat at Stockwood Wanderers
9
Bassett's biggest league victory of the season - 9-0 triumph at home against Stockwood Wanderers
10
The length of Bassett's unbeaten league run - comprising eight wins and two draws - to start the season. Ended by a 2-0 home defeat against Corsham Town
13
The number of goals Bassett conceded in the league all season - by far the strongest defense in the division (Corsham Town and Bitton had the equal second best defensive record with both conceding 29 goals
The number of league goals scored by the team's top scorer Lauren Bulley (also 13th best in the league)
14
The number of league clean sheets Bassett kept (almost two-thirds of their games played). The number of goals Bassett conceded was fewer than the number of clean sheets they kept
15
The number of players to register at least one league goal for Bassett (including one own goal)
Also the number of players to appear in 16 or more of Bassett's league fixtures (more than 70% of games played). Having a fit, settled squad played a major part in Bassett's success
24
The number of players to feature for Bassett in the league. Just one - goalkeeper Millie Powell - was an ever present, but five others, including key defenders Alice Bowden, Darcy Cox and Briony Hurd, missed just one game
54
The points Bassett earned to win the title - two more than runners up Corsham Town and four more than Bitton in an enthralling title race that went to the wire
61
The number of goals Bassett scored - fourth most in the division, though only six fewer than league leaders Mangotsfield United

Champion performance seals title

Royal Wootton Bassett Town are South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North champions!

Knowing that victory away at Paulton Rovers would guarantee top spot, James Lally's side delivered the victory they needed - and then some.

The jitters that had seemed to afflict Bassett in final run in were gone. Instead a confident performance secured an emphatic 5-0 victory and the outcome that Bassett's performances over the past nine months more than deserved.

Despite having won just once in the league all season, Paulton were set to be no pushovers, having been competitive in most of their fixtures this season.

And they held out against Bassett for most of the first half until Kelly Nightingale, scoring her first goal of the season, headed home a Tori Taylor corner at the far post.

Leading scorer Lauren Bulley then put Bassett in charge going into the break, tapping in after a powerful strike from Hannah Gulliver came back out off the post.

Elle Scott's second half hat trick then sealed the deal. Scott had not scored since January, but the midfielder made sure to reach double figures before the end of an impressive campaign.

A fierce strike into the bottom corner made it 3-0 before she reacted quickest to grab the rebound following a penalty that Bulley was unable to convert. A headed goal then made it 5-0 to complete the scoring.

And it was more than fitting too that Bassett kept a clean sheet. It marked the 14th occasion in their 22 league games - and 18th time overall this season - that Bassett had shutout their opponents. Indeed the number of league clean sheets is one greater than the number of goals (13) they conceded.

Those numbers are remarkable - and testament to the outstanding defense Bassett have, as well as the quality of coaching they have received.

As Bassett know all too well from their previous experience in 2017-18 and 2023-24 when narrowly missing out, fine margins are often the difference between earning the title and remaining at tier six.

This year, fortune was in Bassett's favour as they edged out Corsham Town and Bitton in what has been a thrilling title race involving three excellent sides.

But Bassett's defensive record - far and away the best in the division - has arguably been the decisive factor.

After a three year hiatus, Bassett will now return to tier five of the women's football pyramid.

Champions of Division One North - what an achievement that all the players and management team deserve to celebrate.

Magnificent Under 14 Girls lift cup in style

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Under 14 Girls rounded off an excellent season by thrashing Marlborough Youth Raiders 6-1 to win the North Wilts League Cup.

Bassett descended on Foundation Park prepared, focused, and facing familiar opponents in Marlborough Youth Raiders - a side they had already beaten three times this season and their preparation to the final showed from the first whistle.

Bassett started on the front foot, carving out early chances created by Alisa, Mia, and Sienna. The breakthrough came from a well-worked move: a sharp Lily throw-in found Mia, who slipped a clever touch into Ava inside the box. Ava needed no second invitation, lashing home to open the scoring.

With Bassett in control, the chances kept flowing, and the second arrived via pressing and precision. Izzy stepped in with a clean interception, fed Lily, who found Alisa; and she teed up Mia to finish clinically for 2–0.

Confidence surged and so did the scoreline.

Izzy intercepted again and released Lily, whose pass picked out Sienna. Her initial effort was blocked, but Ava pounced 15 yards out, catching the defence off-guard and firing in for 3–0 - three goals in six blistering minutes.

Marlborough rallied and grabbed a lifeline before the break. A speculative effort from Zara Rex crashed off the crossbar and cruelly deflected in off Chloe for an own goal, 3–1.

Sensing a shift, Marlborough pressed with intent, but Chloe responded superbly, producing a pair of excellent saves to preserve the two-goal cushion at half-time.

Half-time: 3–1

Bassett reasserted themselves after the restart, regaining control in midfield and restoring their rhythm.

The fourth came from a set-piece: Ava's wicked corner was met by Mia, who powered home a header for 4–1.

Moments later, Sienna rattled the post with a fierce strike and then turned provider from the resulting corner, delivering for Mia to tap in and complete her hat-trick.

The final word belonged to the team's persistence and sharp reactions. Poppy threaded a lovely through ball for Mia; her shot was tipped onto the bar by the keeper, but Eryn reacted first, coolly slotting in the rebound to cap a commanding performance at 6–1.

A thoroughly deserved cup triumph for an Under 14 side who have enjoyed a superb run and a strong season— they were unlucky league runners-up, but emphatic cup winners on the day. Well done, Bassett.

POTM goes to every single player, for working together tirelessly throughout the match to secure the final win.

Mia Hughes was chosen by the North Wilts League Committee as the POTM.

Hurd at the double as Men’s and Women’s sides celebrate season

Women's First Team defender Briony Hurd was the star of the show as Royal Wootton Bassett Town's Men's and Women's sides held their presentation evening on Friday.

Hurd took home both her team's Players' Player and Supporters' Player of the Year prizes.

Elsewhere there were five different award winners for the Men's First Team and three for the Development team.

Full details are below.

Women's First Team

The Women's First Team wrap up their season on Sunday when they hope to record the win that will secure the South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North title.

Key to Bassett's success has been their watertight defence that has recorded a remarkable 17 clean sheets.

And it is therefore perhaps little surprise that a key member of James Lally's side's defence, Briony Hurd, picked up a Player of the Year double. Hurd was absent most of last season while travelling, but has been sensational following her return with consistent, strong displays. One of the first names on the teamsheet, Hurd has played in all but two games, coming off the bench just once, while also scoring four goals.

Tori Taylor - one of Lally's key summer signings - then took the Manager's Player of the Year prize. Featuring in midfield and attack, Taylor's experience has proven decisive for Bassett this season, helping her team pull through in multiple closely fought games. Her quality has been on display too. And in 24 appearances so far, Taylor has contributed eight goals - including the stunning winner in a crucial away victory at Bitton.

Players' Player of the Year: Briony Hurd
Manager's Player of the Year: Tori Taylor
Supporters' Player of the Year: Briony Hurd

Men's First Team

While ultimately finishing in 16th place in the Hellenic League Premier Division, there were plenty of positives to take from the Men's First Team campaign which saw Bassett's talented young side grow across the course of a testing season.

And the quality and promise of the squad Jonny Aitkenhead built was reflected in the team's prize winners.

Second top scorer Rudi Hopkins took the Manager's Player of the Year prize. The dynamic, confident forward bagged eleven goals in 41 appearances, while also providing numerous assists.

The versatile Harry Messenger, meanwhile, picked up the Players' Player of the Year award. A classy operator who shows maturity beyond his years and is the type of player to build a team around, Messenger stood out in his 25 appearances as he split time between centre half and central midfield.

There was then a three-way tie for the Supporters' Player of the Year prize. Top scorer Ben Cleary, young full back - and youth section product - Ollie Smith and midfield playmaker Ed Taylor finished tied in the voting.

A hard working player with an eye for goal, Cleary led the line for Bassett throughout the campaign, netting 20 times in his team-leading 46 games, while also captaining the side for most of the campaign.

Smith was excellent throughout the season, impressing in his defensive duties as well as when going forward and finished with three goals in 39 games. Taylor was a worthy winner too as the diminutive midfielder stood out with his passing range and how easy he made the game look.

Another player who featured in the vast majority of games, Taylor scored three goals in 42 matches.

Players' Player of the Year: Harry Messenger
Manager's Player of the Year: Rudi Hopkins
Supporters' Player of the Year: Ben Cleary, Ollie Smith and Ed Taylor

Men's Development Team

The Development team enjoyed a solid Wiltshire League Premier Division campaign with Mark Simpkins' finishing in eighth - inside the top half - with elevens wins, eleven draws and ten defeats to their name.

That was an impressive outcome in a strong division, especially given the turnover in players throughout the season.

Three of the team's leading appearance makers took home their awards.

Midfielder Matt Capel, who scored five goals in 33 games, earned Players' Player of the Year. The versatile Max Spackman took the Manager's Player prize after scoring three times in 33 appearances. Meanwhile, talented forward Toby Parker - who netted four goals in 32 games, while also featuring three times for the Men's First Team - was named Supporters' and Young Player of the Year.

Players' Player of the Year: Matt Capel
Manager's Player of the Year: Max Spackman
Supporters' Player of the Year: Toby Parker
Young Player of the Year: Toby Parker

Provisional Hellenic League Premier Division constitution announced

The provisional constitution for the 2026-27 Hellenic League Premier Division season has been published by the Football Association, with the allocations for all leagues at steps one through six of the National League System being released.

There are set to be three changes to the division, with Bassett aiming to improve on their 16th place finish in 2025-26 as manager Jonny Aitkenhead enters his second season in charge.

Bassett are set for a further two derbies following the promotion of Devizes Town as Western League Division One champions and Malmesbury Victoria as Hellenic League Division One playoff winners.

One of Wiltshire's most decorated non league sides, Devizes are finally back at step five for the first time since 2008-09. And they will be league rivals of Bassett for the first time since 1966-67 when the teams were together in the Wiltshire League Premier Division.

Devizes were in the same division as Bassett's Development team in 2022-23 when Devizes finished as runners-up in the Wiltshire Senior League Premier Division having fallen to step seven for a single season. Now though they are at a level befitting of their stature and support and we look forward to what hopefully will be two well contested Wiltshire derbies.

Malmesbury, meanwhile, return to step five after a season away, having triumphed in the playoffs for the second time in three years. Set to play at step five for the third time in their history, Malmesbury will be aiming to avoid the same fate they have previously suffered when in the Hellenic Premier, having failed to survive beyond a single season the two previous occasions they have been in the division.

There will be then new opponents for Bassett in the form of Stourport Swifts.

The Worcestershire-based Swifts have been transferred from the Midland League Premier Division where they have spent the past twelve seasons. The Swifts, who played in the Southern League from 2001-02 to 2011-12, finished 14th in 2025-26.

Departing the Hellenic Premier are champions Slimbridge and playoff winners Worcester Raiders, both of who earned promotion to step four.

Heading in the opposite direction are Lydney Town after an eleven season spell at step five. Cribbs earned a reprieve despite finishing 19th as a result of resignations elsewhere.

The full provisional constitution for the 2026-27 Hellenic League Premier Division, featuring 20 sides, is as follows:

Cinderford Town
Cirencester Town
Corsham Town
Cribbs
Devizes Town
Droitwich Spa
Fairford Town
Hallen
Hereford Pegasus
Highworth Town
Longlevens
Malmesbury Victoria
Mangotsfield United
Pershore Town
Roman Glass St. George
Royal Wootton Bassett Town
Stourport Swifts
Thornbury Town
Tuffley Rovers
If Bassett win away at Paulton Rovers on Sunday (2pm kick off), they will be champions.

Any other outcome and it will all come down to how results go elsewhere involving Bitton and Corsham Town.

Bassett's destiny is in their own hands though - and they will be favourites to beat a Paulton side who have won just once in the league this season.

Yet Sunday's hosts will be no pushovers. Bassett triumphed 2-0 when they met in Wiltshire earlier this season, while Paulton have been competitive in most of their games. The teams also drew 1-1 when they met in Paulton last year.

One last big performance is therefore needed from Bassett.

The game is taking place at Writhlington School, Radstock (BA3 3NQ).

Also on Sunday morning the Under 14 Girls play their North Wilts League Cup final against Marlborough Youth Raiders (Foundation Park, 9.30am kick off).

After finishing runners-up in Division One, the Under 14 Girls are aiming for the first North Wilts League Cup success for the club's Girls' section.

They face a Marlborough team who Bassett have recorded three wins against in high-scoring league games, including a pair of 4-3 victories and an 8-5 triumph.

Best of luck to both teams - and please do come along and show your support if you can!

Despite having just one league win to their name, Paulton have proven a competitive outfit across almost all their league outings.

However Bassett's destiny is now - with one game left - in their own hands with that last remaining hurdle being a contest they will be clear favourites to win.

This has to be Bassett's moment.

As with many of their now sixteen league wins so far this campaign, Bassett's victory against Bath was hard fought and decided by narrow margins.

That has been Bassett's trademark. They boast the joint-fourth most potent attack in the division. Yet their defensive record is far and away the best (even if they conceded a sixth goal in their past three outings).

Bassett led early when Bath's Katie Davis turned the ball into the net at the far post following a Tori Taylor corner.

But Bath levelled when a fine Beth Edwards pass fed right winger Emma Vilday in behind the Bassett defence and she clipped a well taken first time effort beyond Millie Powell.

The hosts restored their lead when Mia Mugford shed her marker and steered home from another Taylor corner at the left post.

And Bassett seemingly assumed control of the match around the hour mark when a well worked move ended with Megan Young teeing up Hannah Gulliver for a tap in.

But ten minutes later Bath pulled one back as Darcy Cox was unfortunate to head a corner into her own net.

It was then almost level late on when Adella Clarke shot on the turn from the right edge of the box but saw her effort crash off the bar.

Bassett held out though to record another vital victory in what has been an enthralling title race.

One game now to go.

Under 18 Blues denied the double

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Under 18 Blue were denied the double as Ramsbury Youth overturned a 2-0 deficit before prevailing on penalties in the North Wilts League Cup final.

Bassett were the runaway Division One champions and aiming to become the first Under 18 team in club history to claim the North Wilts League double.

And they looked on course to do just that thanks to an early Jack Moss goal and a second half strike from Rauf Acheampong.

The Blues had numerous chances to extend their lead further too - which they would end up rueing.

Ramsbury had run Bassett close in a pair of league defeats. And they summoned a late comeback with cup silverware on the line, forcing penalties with goals from Olly McDonald-Smith and Finlay Mowe.

A dramatic shootout ensued - with Ramsbury prevailing in sudden death.

Weekend preview: Huge home finale as title race nears conclusion

Royal Wootton Bassett Town play their penultimate game of the South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North season on Sunday - and their final fixture at home.

The stakes couldn't be any higher as Bassett entertain Bath City (Gerard Buxton Sports Ground, 2pm kick off).

Three points are more or less a must as Bassett seek to maintain top spot and take the title in what has been a thrilling, topsy-turvy race.

With fellow contenders Bitton and Corsham Town facing each other, one (or both) of those sides will see their chances take a dent. And given their superior goal difference, a Bassett win will all but guarantee that James Lally's team enter their final match at Paulton Rovers in control of their own destiny.

First though, Bassett have to get through a stern test against a Bath side who are always competitive. Indeed, Bassett edged a 1-0 win against the Romans in their earlier meeting this season, maintaining a streak that has see no game between the teams being decided by more than two goals.

Sunday's game is critical - so please do come along and show your support.

Admission is £4 for adults, £2 for concessions and free for RWBTFC youth members.

Prior to that Saturday sees the Under 18 Blues aim for North Wilts League Cup glory as they face Ramsbury in the final at the Corinium Stadium, Cirencester (9.30am kick off).

Do come along and show your support as the Under 18s seek to complete the double!

Just.

Thursday's shock defeat against Stockwood Wanderers turned this game into one Bassett had to win to avoid having to rely on results elsewhere in their final two games to overtake Corsham Town.

And it looked as though Bassett's afternoon was destined to end in what would have been a disappointing, dispiriting draw too.

Bassett didn't make things easy for themselves after Poppy Wannell was dismissed in the first half. The young forward let her emotions in the heat of the battle get the better of her, with the referee initially sending her to the sin bin for her language before upgrading that to a red card after Wannell did not back down.

Bassett then saw what seemed to be a perfectly legitimate goal from Hannah Gulliver ruled out for offside when she bundled in the rebound after a Mia Mugford shot was saved.

To compound matters, Cirencester quickly went up the other end and took the lead through Annie Martin.

Bassett now had to chase the game short-handed.

The hosts eventually levelled when player of the match Briony Hurd found the net following an Elle Scott free kick delivery.

Then, in the final minute, a Scott corner fell to Young, who - much to the delight (and relief) of her team - put the ball away.

It was all too much for Cirencester too as defender Sarah Rayworth decided to deliver an elbow to the ribs of Bassett's Lauren Bulley.

That massively unspotting act earned her a deserved straight red card - with the referee also calling time.

Bassett had snared the victory they needed.

Late Goal Gives RAF Win

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Veterans ran the RAF FA close in the Over 35s fixture that formed part of the now traditional Super Saturday meeting between the two sides.

Mark Zych fired Bassett ahead but a well taken goal just before half time saw the RAF level matters up going into the break.

The second half saw the RAF go in front for the first time in the game.

Bassett went close to leveling when Men's First Team manager Jonny Aitkenhead was clean through on goal but somehow managed to hit his shot against the post when it looked easier to score. He injured a 'hammy' - and perhaps also some pride - in the process and was forced to come off.

Bassett did get themselves back on level terms with a well taken headed goal from Gavin Cook.

However, it would be the RAF who would celebrate the win a late goal giving them a 3-2 win.

Bassett set for North Wilts League Cup final double

The next two weekends see Royal Wootton Bassett Town's Under 18 Blue and Under 14 Girls sides aim for North Wilts League Cup glory as both feature in their respective age group finals.

On Saturday 9 May the Under 18 Blues face Ramsbury at the Corinium Stadium (9.30am kick off).

Then on Sunday 17 May the Under 14 Girls take on Marlborough Youth Raiders at Foundation Park (9.30am kick off).

Please do come along and show your support to both teams!

It's the first time since the 2018-19 season that Bassett have had sides reach the North Wilts League Cup final - and both teams will
be aiming to make history.

The Under 18 Blues have a chance to be the first Bassett side to complete a North Wilts League and Cup double at their age group.

After being awarded their second round tie against Wroughton Youth, Bassett saw off Division One rivals AFC Park 3-1 in the quarter finals before a convincing 5-1 victory against Stratton Youth in the last four.

The Blues completed a season double over final opponents Ramsbury in the league, winning 5-4 away and 3-1 at home.

Meanwhile, after finishing runners-up in Division One, the Under 14 Girls are aiming for the first North Wilts League Cup success for the club's Girls' section.

Their route to the final involved a 4-1 quarter final win against Bradford Town Ravens before beating Division One Champions Tyrone Mings Hurricanes 2-1 in the semi final.

They now face a Marlborough team who Bassett have recorded three wins against in high-scoring league games, including a pair of 4-3 victories and an 8-5 triumph.

An exciting final with plenty of goals is therefore on the cards.

Best of luck to both teams - and come on Bassett!

Bassett suffer shock Stockwood setback

Royal Wootton Bassett Town suffered a setback in the race for the South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North title as they fell to a shock 3-2 defeat away against Stockwood Wanderers.

Facing a Stockwood side fighting to escape the bottom three, Bassett's midweek visit to Bristol was always going to be a challenging one.

But having kept seven consecutive league clean sheets, James Lally's team entered the game as clear favourites.

Yet they ultimately fell victim to an upset defeat - and missed out on the opportunity to take over top spot from leaders Corsham Town.

Stockwood took the lead from the penalty spot courtesy of Izzy Marsh before Hannah Gulliver equalised with a well taken goal.

However, Maddie Stadde headed a second to restore Stockwood's lead - an advantage her team took into the break after 'keeper Ava Vowles saved from a Lauren Bulley penalty.

Bassett's evening went from bad to worse after the restart when Stockwood captain Toni Blenkinsopp capitalised on a defensive error to make it 3-1.

Alice Bowden did pull one back for Bassett, slotting home after Elle Scott collected a Gulliver corner and squared to the experienced defender.

But, despite a late rally and throwing everything they could at Stockwood, an equaliser was not forthcoming, with Bassett enduring the added frustration of seeing a goal disallowed.

Despite the result, Bassett can still go top - but to do so they now must beat local rivals Cirencester Town at home on Sunday. Fail to win that game, and Bassett will be playing catchup with two games to go.

That added pressure is something that Bassett could have done without.

All three title challengers - Bassett, Corsham and Bitton - can now achieve a maximum of 54 points if they win all their remaining games, with Bassett currently holding the tiebreaker on goal difference should that come into play.

With Bitton and Corsham due to play each other next weekend, one or both are guaranteed to not reach that number.

Here's hoping Bassett stay the course to get there.

Bassett edge a step closer to the top

Two goals. Another clean sheet. Three more points. And - most importantly- one step closer to taking over top spot in the South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North.

Royal Wootton Bassett Town's 2-0 triumph against Mangotsfield United saw them pull within three points of leaders Corsham Town with two games in hand still to play.

Top spot could therefore belong to Bassett by this time next weekend if James Lally's side can claim victory against either Stockwood Wanderers or Cirencester Town - their opponents on Thursday and next Sunday.

Victory in both games would see Bassett, barring any huge shifts in goal difference, require just one win from their final two fixtures to seal the title.

While claiming their latest victory and another clean sheet, Bassett were not quite at their best against Mangotsfield.

Indeed they were rather lucky to have not fallen behind in an opening period that saw the visitors squander a series of gilt-edged chances.

Mangotsfield should really have been ahead when Adele Elliott shrugged off the attentions of Alice Bowden to get on the end of a long throw in behind the defence but she could only find the side netting.

After Bassett gave the ball away in their own half, Elliott teed up an unmarked Brooke Moore who skied over the bar.

Their best opportunity to go ahead then fell to Moore after Mangotsfield won a penalty but she dragged her spot pick onto the left post.

Bassett had their moments too with Poppy Wannell dragging wide and Honor Fraser firing over when through one-on-one.

But they wound up going ahead shortly before the half time. Lauren Bulley's finish wasn't the prettiest but it was a vital goal as she steered in from a Fraser cut back after good work to win back the ball from Tori Taylor and Elle Scott's pass into the right channel.

Bassett then doubled their lead shortly after the restart as captain Laura Jefferies swung in a corner that evaded everyone and found its way in at the far post.

The second goal seemed to settle Bassett.

And Wannell was inches away from making it three after picking off a pass before narrowly dragging wide of the post.

A third goal wasn't needed though as Mangotsfield created little in the second period - and Bassett sealed another crucial three points in a thrilling title race.

Weekend preview: Two games in four days - including derby date

Royal Wootton Bassett Town face two South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North fixtures in the space of four days - including a derby date against Cirencester Town on Sunday.

James Lally's side will be looking for at least three points that will take them to the top of the table - with a pair of wins potentially enough to put them on the brink of the title.

Neither game will be easy though.

Bassett and Cirencester drew 1-1 when they met at the Corinium Stadium in January, with the teams also splitting the points in their encounter at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground last season.

Sunday's fixture takes place at 2pm. Entry is via donation with proceeds raised going to Prospect Hospice in memory of the mother of Cirencester player Phoebe McGouran - a good friend of a number of the Bassett squad.

Prior to that on Thursday Bassett travel to face Stockwood Wanderers (7pm kick off).

Bassett were comfortable 9-0 winners against Stockwood in October. However, Thursday's hosts have turned things around in recent weeks as they fight to extricate themselves from the bottom three. And three of their four league wins this season have come in their last seven games.

The Over 35s then take the field at 3pm.

Food and drinks will follow in the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground clubhouse.

We look forward to seeing you - and many others - at the event.

-

As a club, we are always proud to help build on the close ties between Royal Wootton Bassett and the armed forces, in particular the Royal Air Force.

Given the proximity to Lyneham, numerous individuals linked with the RAF - be they serving in the air force or their family members - have played, coached or volunteered for Bassett over the years.

And, in keeping with the town's motto - "We honour those who serve" - we hope hosting this event is a fitting way of showing our appreciation for everything the RAF have done for our town and country.

The Super Saturday event is the most important date in the calendar for Bassett's Veterans section, with strong relations having been built with the RAF FA over the course of nine years since the first edition in 2018.

And all events have been extremely well attended and supported.

It is therefore hoped that it will be the same this year.
